Chapter 316 The Power of the Snow Maiden

Seimei suddenly opened his eyes, and a terrifying, eerie light shot out from them. He stood up, and an inexplicable, magical power enveloped him, somewhat like Dumbledore's mind magic, but more flexible and efficient.

Bai Lin leaped up and stretched his limbs. His swordsmanship had recently improved significantly, and he was planning to find a trial monster to test his skills. The Yuki-onna, whom even Seimei called very strong, was certainly a good choice.

The two quickly stepped out of the wooden house. Outside, the world was already white. The moonlight was blocked by dark clouds, but Bai Lin's night vision was very strong. He even felt that the snow covering the mountain was a bit too white.

The snowstorm had subsided somewhat, but the temperature was still dropping. The mages and warriors outside were practically covered in snowmen, their lips turning blue from the cold. Even though Bai Lin's body had been tainted by the chaotic power and he was also affinity-for-ice elements, he still felt the biting chill.

Many samurai summoned the divine power of Takemikazuchi, their bodies emitting faint sparks, yet their aura was formidable. Bai Lin still hadn't figured out the mechanism of this divine power—how it was activated, how it was maintained, what it consumed—it was all unclear. It was like a buff that could be activated at any time, but Bai Lin's intuition told him it wasn't that simple; power in this world was never easily obtained.

The monks, each carrying an oil lamp, were chanting incantations.

"Activate the magic circle, here it comes!" At Seimei's command, dozens of oil lamps around him suddenly turned from orange to bluish-green. A group of mages chanted unknown scriptures loudly, and the samurai drew their swords and formed a line in front of Seimei.

Dozens of greenish-blue lights looked quite eerie, but the light formed a protective wall, shielding everyone inside. Bai Lin turned around and saw a greenish-blue woman sitting on a cane, floating beside Qingming. Several exquisitely carved palace lanterns, all with greenish-blue light, hung on the cane. It was his shikigami, Qingdengxing.

Bai Lin nodded and focused his attention on the vast expanse of white forest directly opposite the wooden house.

A visible chill swept through the mountains and forests, turning the fluffy white snow into pale blue ice. The chill stopped only when it reached the range of the lamp's light, but as it slowly bypassed their protective circle, Bai Lin felt that part of the wooden house behind him had been penetrated by the chill, making a crisp sound as if it had cracked. It was clear that if an ordinary person were exposed to even a little of this chill, they would probably be frozen into an ice sculpture immediately.

As the chill gradually dissipated, the group dared not let their guard down. Soon after, a gust of wind swept through the forest about two hundred meters ahead, making a rustling sound. Immediately afterward, countless arrows made of solid ice shot out from the forest, arcing through the air and heading towards their battle formation.

"WTF!" Bai Lin activated his magical energy, preparing to release a spatial barrier to block the arrow array, while Qingming shouted, "Don't panic!" As he spoke, he stepped forward and summoned an ancient tortoise shell in his hand. The tortoise shell transformed into a golden light, forming a tortoise-patterned shield above everyone.

The shield was almost tangible. The ice arrows that rained down struck the tortoise-patterned shield and shattered instantly. Qingming raised his right hand, gritting his teeth and persevering. There were at least several thousand arrows, and the rain lasted for nearly a minute. Bai Lin felt as if an hour had passed, nervously watching the shield's condition. Once the shield broke, he would have to rely on himself to block it.

Fortunately, Seimei persevered. Looking at the area not protected by the tortoise-patterned shield, it had been turned into a "grassland" by two-foot-long ice spikes.

"They didn't even meet us, and they pulled off such a massive attack!" Bai Lin swallowed hard. "No wonder the delegation of over a hundred people was wiped out in no time!"

Seimei frowned and said, "This kind of spell consumes a lot of energy; she can't use it one after another. Bai Dayun, it's up to you to perform now!"

Bai Lin chuckled. Qingming seemed to realize that he had been holding back his strength, which made him slightly embarrassed. Just then, a deafening roar came from the mountains and forests, followed by the ground shaking. Bai Lin looked over and saw countless mountain spirits rushing out of the forest. Some were familiar, some were unfamiliar; some were demons, some were strange beasts, and some were difficult to categorize. All sorts of bizarre creatures formed an "army," emitting various strange cries, and charged towards the Yin-Yang Bureau's camp.

Ootengu, with his wind-wielding skills, led the samurai of the Onmyōryō (Bureau of Yin and Yang) forward. His fan was incredibly powerful, manipulating a whirlwind to blow the yokai away like autumn leaves. However, the yokai were physically strong, and the whirlwind could only break their formation, not inflict widespread damage.

The samurai's weapons were crackled with lightning, forming long electric whips. The electric whips were incredibly powerful; a single sweep sent the small monsters that grazed the edge rolling on the ground, their bodies convulsing from the electric shocks. However, the killing effect was not as cruel or exciting as a direct, bloody massacre. The samurai roared and charged into the enemy ranks, but they were not as brave as Watanabe no Tsuna or Minamoto no Hiromasa, and soon found themselves in a fierce battle.

The other samurai protected Seimei and the Onmyōryō mages. The mages began chanting incantations in a mystical manner. Hakurin thought they were going to throw out some kind of attack spells like fireballs or ice arrows, but they just summoned some low-level yokai shikigami. However, they were small in size and had a weak aura, and it was obvious that they didn't have much combat power.

Fortunately, Seimei was incredibly capable. Every monster that rushed into the oil lamp formation was attacked by Ao-Deng-ko's flames. Ao-Deng-ko continuously threw balls of blue flames into the air, and the fireballs automatically dispersed and flew towards the monsters that had entered the formation. It was like an automatic tracking attack. If it weren't for her, the Yin-Yang Bureau's defenses would have collapsed long ago.

Bai Lin summoned Xue Feng, who rode a giant wolf and charged in and out of the vanguard of monsters three times, killing at least dozens of monsters of various kinds. The monsters' blood splattered all over Xue Feng, making him appear even more ferocious.

However, the samurai on the other side had begun to suffer casualties. Although the Blue Lantern's attacks were very precise, their destructive power was not that sharp. They could not kill the slightly larger mountain demons with one blow. Although the samurai were brave, they were still ordinary people after all. Their divine power only increased their lethality and speed. In the battle where the number of troops was disparate, they gradually fell into a disadvantageous position, and samurai died from time to time.

The mages' shikigami were also retreating steadily, suffering countless losses. Some mages, after their shikigami were killed, were unable to escape and were also pierced through the heart by a bamboo spear thrown by a certain spirit.

Bai Lin truly envied sword masters like the Broken Monk or Minamoto no Yorimitsu, whose every move could unleash sword energy, making them far more destructive in battle formations. Although his sword energy, combined with the Divine Edge Without Shadow in his left hand, was equally invincible, he always felt a lack of sustained power.

He roughly estimated that he could unleash a powerful crescent-shaped sword aura in about two minutes. He named this move "Illusion Moon". This move was more powerful than any offensive spell at close range, and it was devastating. If he were to fight Fujiwara Ichiura again, Bai Lin was confident that he would not be at a disadvantage in close combat alone.

Seeing the heavy losses suffered by the samurai and mages, Seimei shouted, "Retreat a bit!"
