Chapter 314 The Secret of the Demon Slayer Corps
Song Quan grabbed the corpse of the six-armed demon and cleaved it open in the abdomen. Instantly, all sorts of filthy filth, black, yellow, and red, gushed out. Most people would probably wet themselves in fright at the sight.
"Captain! Kawachi is dying!" A Demon Slayer Corps member held his dying young comrade in his arms and said with a heavy heart.
Song Quan glanced at the demons around him who were already dead. His figure slowly returned to its original form, which was surrounded by black mist during the battle. However, Bai Lin could see that his muscles were trembling and burning red, and his steps were not so steady.
Song Quan stepped forward, glanced at the dying Hanoi, clasped his hands together, and began to recite an obscure passage of scripture.
But just as Hanoi breathed his last, Song Quan suddenly drew his katana and beheaded Hanoi in one stroke.
The young Demon Slayer Corps members and Hakurin in the distance were dumbfounded by what they saw. Kawachi's head had rolled on the ground, and from the severed neck, in addition to the spurting blood, a wisp of black smoke also emanated, just like the way demons die.
"As members of the Demon Slayer Corps, we must be prepared to be beheaded..." Song Quan's face was filled with sorrow, but it quickly turned into anger and hatred: "If we don't cut off Kawachi's head, he will become a demon too..."
The older members of the team silently took out a large cloth bag and numbly beheaded the corpses of their teammates one by one, then put the heads into the bag. Meanwhile, another ghost swordsman walked to the corpse of a taller demon, pulled out a small katana, and skillfully dug out the demon's heart, liver, and other organs, then handed the heart to Song Quan.
Song Quan glanced at the bloodied heart, then bit into it. Dark red demonic blood splattered out like fruit juice, while the other ghost swordsmen silently devoured the liver. They were actually eating with relish, the scene no different from demons eating humans.
Suddenly, Bai Lin understood how to become a Ghost Swordsman... Only by eating the internal organs of a ghost, just like a ghost eats people, could one possess the power of a ghost... But at this point, would a person still be considered a real person? Bai Lin had no answer.
They watched helplessly as the Demon Slayer Corps burned their comrades' bodies and buried their heads on the south-facing hillside. Instead of retreating down the mountain, they ate the demon's entrails, and seemed to regain their strength. Their wounds healed rapidly, but their complexions were extremely pale, and their tattoos appeared to have grown larger.
Consuming the entrails of demons is no easy feat. Bai Lin sighed. He feared that the Ghost Swordsmen wouldn't live long; their fate would be either beheading or transformation into demons...
"Captain, should we continue into the mountains?" A team member asked, seeing that Song Quan showed no intention of returning to Kyoto.
"Continue up the mountain and kill the Snow Woman..." Song Quan said calmly.
"But...the Snow Woman didn't do anything evil," the young team member said, frowning.
"Enough! Shirakawa! A demon is a demon! All demons must be slain!" Song Quan's tone suddenly turned fierce, his eyes gleaming with hatred. "Don't spout that nonsense about not having done anything evil!"
The young team member Bai Chuan wanted to say something, but his teammates quickly pulled him away, not wanting him to argue with Song Quan anymore.
Bai Chuan was somewhat helpless. His teammates pulled him to the back of the group. Song Quan ignored them and quickened his pace. They walked step by step through the snow into the depths of the mountains, leaving behind a trail of deep footprints.
Bai Lin didn't immediately go up to join them, but followed at a distance. With his keen hearing, he could hear everything the Demon Slayer team members were saying, and perhaps he could get some useful information.
At the back of the group, Shirakawa asked his teammate in a low voice, "Senior, there are so many yokai, why do we insist on chasing after the Yuki-onna, and that hair-eating demon too?"
The older teammate whispered, "When General Minamoto no Yorimitsu led his troops to subdue the demon king Yasha of Mount Ōe, the captain offered to have the Demon Slayer Corps accompany him, but the general humiliated him, saying that the Demon Slayer Corps couldn't even handle minor demons like the Yuki-onna and the Hair-Eating Demon, so what right did they have to fight alongside the army... Therefore, the captain had to prove himself to the nobles and the common people..."
Bai Lin, who was far away, was taken aback. So that was the reason. The poor hair-eating ghost had become a pledge of allegiance.
The older Demon Slayer continued, "And... actually... the captain doesn't have much time left..."
Shirakawa was taken aback, not understanding what his senior meant: "Captain? What do you mean by 'not much time left'?"
The senior's expression was somewhat strange, tinged with sadness as he said, "After the transformation... even the strongest person... can only live for five years at most... and the other team members will have to cut off their head, otherwise they will become a monster..." The senior paused and continued, "The captain only has six months left... so he wants to kill as many monsters as possible before he dies..."
Shirakawa swallowed hard, looking at his teammate and saying, "Then, senior, you..."
The senior gritted his teeth and said, "Last year, my village was attacked by demons... Although the Demon Slayer Corps arrived, my family had already..." He paused and continued, "What difference does it make whether they die sooner or later? I just want to help the captain..."
Shirakawa gave his senior a deep look. He looked to be only in his thirties, but at that age he should already be married with children. His family meant... it turned out everyone was the same; they had no relatives left in the world and had long since disregarded life and death...
Bai Chuan gritted his teeth and quickened his pace, following in Song Quan's direction.
Bai Lin sighed, his heart filled with mixed feelings. He knew the secret of the Demon Slayer Corps, but felt helpless about their tragic fate.
After crossing several mountain ridges, the wind and snow grew stronger, and the mountain path ahead could no longer be seen. The Demon Slayer Corps members stopped talking, used straw raincoats to shield themselves from the wind and snow, and walked forward resolutely with their heads down.
Bai Lin, however, had already sensed waves of magical energy emanating from the valley not far ahead. With a thought, he teleported past the Demon Slayer Corps to the mountaintop ahead.
Looking down from the hilltop, it was a shallow valley, but the wind and snow were much less intense than on the windward side. In the valley, there was an old wooden house, and outside the house, there were many simple wooden sheds, all made of local materials and constructed using some kind of magic. Around the wooden house, there were many flags of the Yin-Yang Bureau, indicating that there must have been more than a hundred people there, including warriors and mages. It seemed that the Yin-Yang Bureau had set up a stronghold here.
The outer perimeter of the position appeared to have witnessed numerous battles, riddled with craters and perhaps littered with the corpses of humans and demons, though now all were covered by snowflakes, leaving no trace of blood.
The valley was shrouded in a light blue magical barrier. Bai Lin initially thought it was Seimei's protective spell, but upon closer inspection, he realized that it was this barrier that had trapped the people of the Yin-Yang Bureau here, which must have been the work of the Snow Woman.
Bai Lin took a breath. Although he was not afraid of the cold and was a master of ice magic, the chill here still made him very uncomfortable. It seemed to contain some kind of special energy that he couldn't quite explain.
With a few minutes' gap in the Phantom Shift, Bai Lin used his disordered elemental energy to fly down the hill and effortlessly slipped into the barrier trapping the Yin-Yang Chamber, heading towards the wooden house.
