Chapter 280: Shrine robbery
The morning sun shines on the hill, filtering through the pine needles and illuminating the forest path. A quaint little mountain temple is faintly visible among the pine trees on the hilltop.
I thought it was a Zen temple with a long history, but at the foot of the mountain, next to the mountain gate, there was a small stone tablet with four large characters engraved on it: Katsuyama Shrine.
When it comes to shrine culture, it is actually similar to ancestral halls in the East. They generally originated from the places where ancestral tablets of noble families in ancient Japan were enshrined. However, over time, family-run shrines gradually transformed into local temples and were opened to the public. Shrine culture has slowly incorporated elements such as markets, folk performances, divination, and the worship of local deities.
Whether it's ancient Eastern mythology, or Greek mythology, Norse mythology, or Egyptian mythology, gods are powerful and rare. However, Japanese mythology is completely different. They claim to have eight million gods. Keep in mind that Japan's population didn't exceed eight million until the early Warring States period. In the mythological era, there were far more gods than humans. As a result, they wished that every well, stream, and tree had a god in charge, which led to the formation of a unique local god worship.
Getting back to the point, Katsuyama Shrine is located in Katsuyama Park in Tokyo, which can be considered a small tourist attraction, but it is unusually deserted. Whether it is passers-by or tourists playing in the park, they seem to ignore the rather imposing gate, and no one steps up to visit the shrine.
It took Bai Lin several hours to track down the faint magical aura left on the magic note to Katsuyama Park. Muggles seemed oblivious to the gate of Katsuyama Shrine, but wizards could tell at a glance that it was a magical gate, meaning that this was the stronghold of the Japanese national shrine.
Meanwhile, Alex and Nicole, two newbies, were sitting trembling in a dark room. Their wands had been confiscated, and their heads were throbbing from the Stunning Charm. They hadn't seen the faces of the people who had captured them, nor did they know what methods they would use against them. Countless scenes of torture they had seen in movies and TV shows were still vivid in their minds. Before the other party had even made a move, the two newbies had already scared themselves half to death.
"We are employees of the Executive Department of the Eastern Magic Management Committee, and we are protected by international wizarding laws!" Nicole shouted into the darkness, not caring at all whether she had betrayed Bai Lin and Yan Nishuang.
"We are from Hong Kong, we are tourists in Tokyo, what right do you have to kidnap us!" Alex was a little more shrewd than Nicole and tried to defend his identity, but no one responded to them in the darkness, no matter how much they shouted and pleaded.
Outside the darkness, they were merely confined in a small crystal ball. Just a few meters away, four or five neon mages were staring intently at them. They were dressed in black priestly robes, wearing tall crowns and wooden clogs, and their hands, which were behind their backs, held strangely shaped magic wands.
"The executive department in Hong Kong? What connection do we have with them?" asked a middle-aged man standing in the middle. He was short and had a wrinkled face, but his eyes revealed a strong confidence, indicating that he was a powerful wizard.
"Nagata-sama, Gokoku Shrine and the executive branch in Hong Kong have no connection whatsoever," a Japanese wizard who looked to be in his thirties replied.
Another Japanese wizard's eyes flashed with ferocity. He said hatefully, "No matter what they're doing in Tokyo, it's definitely not a good thing. In my opinion, just... finish them off!" He made a throat-slitting gesture, seemingly not caring who he was arresting or whether they were innocent civilians.
Nagata glanced at him sideways and said, "Killing one or two Easterners is insignificant, but if they really are from the Eastern Executive Department, wouldn't that cause trouble for Lord God? You'd better use your pig brain to think about it carefully, Snake Eyes."
The wizard named Snake Eyes wrinkled his nose and said somewhat unconvinced, "So we're just going to do nothing? I think that girl is pretty good, how about..." He twitched his lips and gave a strange laugh.
Nagata waved his hand dismissively, saying, "Do whatever you want, just don't kill him. Tomorrow, throw him onto an Eastern cargo ship. That's settled!"
Snake Eyes was overjoyed and yanked hard on the bones of his fingers, making a cracking sound.
The Japanese sorcerer in his thirties said, "Nagata-sama, according to the eyewitnesses, the one who caused the destruction seems to be the legendary Ibaraki-doji. Could it be that an Eastern sorcerer is trying to steal our divine magic?"
Nagata waved his hand and walked out, saying, "The East, relying on its talismanic magic, has repeatedly refused to pass it on to the Japanese. It's utterly unreasonable. If they really intend to steal the Japanese shikigami techniques this time, we will make sure they don't leave alive! Gather manpower and seal off all magical passages in Tokyo..."
Just as Nagata gave the order and the surrounding monks were about to obey, a sudden voice came from the dimly lit shrine room.
"Is the hostility so strong? Then I'd better show myself to avoid you causing trouble for others, and to avoid me causing trouble for others."
The Japanese sorcerers present were shocked and quickly took up their stances. Two figures slowly emerged from the shadows of the room, Bai Lin and Yan Nishuang, their faces covered with masks.
Although Katsuyama Shrine is not large, it is surrounded by multiple barriers. Without the corresponding methods and tokens of identification, ordinary shamans cannot enter the shrine. Even if they have the tokens, it is impossible to enter their "black prison" silently and without alerting anyone.
"Another beauty?!" Snake Eyes' eyes sparkled. In his opinion, this veiled woman was an absolute beauty, a once-in-a-century gem. He didn't care how she got in; he just thought of her as a delicious meal delivered to his door.
"Looks like there's no need for further words. I still prefer to chat while standing on my opponent's neck..." Bai Lin shrugged. He could tell at a glance that Snake Eyes was the strongest among this group. It was precisely for this reason that Snake Eyes could act so recklessly. He didn't know how many girls had suffered at Snake Eyes' hands. Just from what he said to Nicole and the way he looked at Yan Nishuang, Bai Lin had already sentenced him to death in his mind.
Changtian was also a ruthless person. Just as Bai Lin said, it was more reliable to talk while stepping on the opponent's neck. He waved his hands, and the mages on both sides took out their wands and attacked from both sides, shooting several beams of magical energy at the two of them.
Strangely enough, Bai Lin had been wandering around Europe for several years and had experienced many magical battles. Most of the magic energy was red or green, or his own death magic was purplish-black. But these neon mages had all used spells he had never seen before. The purplish-red energy beams were like blades and swords. Bai Lin had no doubt that an ordinary mage would be cut to pieces on the spot if hit by them. But Bai Lin was not an ordinary mage, and he was extremely angry.
