Chapter 234 The Second Outbreak
Bai Lin shuddered. As a time traveler who had watched countless zombie movies, seeing those photos naturally reminded him of the T-virus that turns people into zombies. However, if the progenitor of zombie games and movies, Resident Evil, had also been created in this timeline, it wouldn't have appeared until 1997. People in 1995 at that time would still be talking about viruses like the flu virus and the hepatitis B virus. Yet, Edogawa Hiroyuki had hit the nail on the head, which was truly astonishing.
Bai Lin asked seriously, "Why are you so sure?"
While sipping his iced porridge, Edogawa Hiroyuki said, "Judging from your reaction, Brother Bai, I'm even more certain of my guess. Great minds think alike!"
He paused for a moment and then said, "I did some research. After all, you basically don't get to know anything about microbiology in magic schools... I discovered that many magical potions are not only effective on humans or magical creatures, but also have amazing effects on some microorganisms."
Bai Lin knew almost nothing about potions, but he remembered that Yan Nishuang was a super academic genius, and her presence would be of great help.
Hiroyuki Edogawa continued, "I got a microscope and observed the effects of Felix Felicis and Vitality Tonic on E. coli. The results are quite clear. Although they may not have the same effect on humans, the microorganisms absorbed the energy of the potions and underwent certain changes. I couldn't get the enhancer, so I believe that one will have a more significant effect on the microorganisms."
Bai Lin nodded and said, "We need someone knowledgeable, and a laboratory, to test the virus found in the victims of the underground bar case..."
Hiroyuki Edogawa said, "I'm afraid it's too late... Microorganisms are extremely powerful yet extremely fragile beings on Earth. The strength of viruses is based on their extremely rapid proliferation, replication, and metabolism. Once a virus is born, it is almost impossible to completely eradicate it on Earth. However, small-scale viruses are very fragile, so fragile that they can be killed by the sun."
I believe the potion they used can significantly increase the virus's activity in a short period, but the virus will die once the potion wears off. Otherwise, they would be caught in a technological competition with the powerful spell management committee, without enough time for deployment experiments and subsequent adjustments.
Bai Lin agreed. After they had eaten and cleaned up, they returned to the West Ring Wharf. However, as soon as they entered the passageway inside the wharf, they saw that the four thugs who wanted to beat up Edogawa Hiroyuki that morning had blocked their way with a group of people. Seeing that the situation was not good, the workers coming and going all ran away in a flash.
"Hey, the little rascal got what he deserved this morning, so he went home and called his parents for help..." Bai Lin shrugged at Edogawa Hiroyuki.
"Hehe, I'll take care of those familiar faces. As for the others, we'll have to rely on Brother Bai to show off his skills..." Edogawa Hiroyuki slung his backpack over his shoulder, protecting his chest, and clenched his fists, looking ready for battle.
Bai Lin nodded to him. This kid was smart and had a lot of courage. He also intended to show off his strength to maintain the tacit understanding between the two of them.
The burly man in the lead looked fierce and menacing. He was holding a steel pipe in one hand and started cursing at the two of them. He was speaking in the local dialect, which Bai Lin couldn't quite understand, but it was definitely not nice.
Although Bai Lin wasn't afraid of the serious consequences of using magic, he didn't want to cause trouble for Yan Nishuang. He was also looking forward to stretching his muscles after a good meal, and these "trial monsters" became the perfect opportunity for him to show off his muscles to Edogawa Hiroyuki.
He suddenly accelerated and charged towards the enemy lines. The gangsters pulled out their weapons, mostly steel pipes, wrenches, and watermelon knives, just like in the movies.
However, the other party was unaware of who he had offended. Seeing Bai Lin rushing over, the burly leader swung his stick at Bai Lin's head without saying a word, not caring at all whether this blow would kill him.
However fierce he was, he did indeed run headfirst into the iron plate. In an instant, Bai Lin, as swift as a ghost, dodged his steel pipe to the side. The big man felt his hand fall to the ground, and due to inertia, his body continued to lean forward. But he watched helplessly as Bai Lin pulled out a sheathed longsword from somewhere. The next moment, he felt the sheath slam into his cheek. A tremendous force almost shattered his entire jawbone. The big man's mind went blank on the spot, and his body flew to the side, crashing heavily to the ground.
Before the underlings could even react, how could their boss have fallen? But they had no time to react, as Bai Lin had already plunged into their ranks like a tiger among sheep.
If the speed of these thugs is 10, then Bai Lin, who is skilled in martial arts and wearing Nightmare Hunter boots, is about 25. In his eyes, the thugs' movements are like slow-motion shots. Even if he were hit by these ordinary iron weapons, the defensive power of his equipment would not be enough to cause effective damage to Bai Lin.
Bai Lin had no intention of killing anyone. He didn't want to be sued for murder the very next day after arriving in Hong Kong. Did he have to run away to another country?
He used his sheathed jade-handled dragon sword to weave through the crowd, specifically striking or thrusting at the gangsters' joints or ribs. Like a whirlwind sweeping away fallen leaves, he took down more than a dozen gangsters in less than a minute. He then slung the longsword over his shoulder and instantly retracted it into his magical storage.
Just then, a patrolman rushed over from a distance, shouting "Stop! Don't move!" while whistling. To be honest, this was the first time Bai Lin had ever seen such a way of warning people with a whistle; it was rather clumsy and cute.
The patrol officers rushed over and saw a group of thugs rolling on the ground, howling in pain. They didn't know what to do for a moment, but when they saw Bai Lin, the only one standing on the ground, they immediately wanted to handcuff him.
Just as his hand was about to grab Bai Lin's arm, Bai Lin opened a document in front of him. It was his work ID from the British Ministry of Magic; of course, to ordinary people, it would look like a British Foreign Office ID.
"Officer, you've come at the right time! I've been attacked by a mob, please arrest them all!" Bai Lin said preemptively, his standard London-accented English immediately intimidating the patrol officer.
The dock patrol officers of this era were more or less aware of the underworld and legitimate society on the docks, and they certainly knew the usual behavior of these gangsters. Normally, they'd just turn a blind eye as long as things didn't get out of hand. But now, these clueless guys had messed with the British, who were at the top of Hong Kong's food chain and whom even the Royal Hong Kong Police Force feared. And this young man, though Asian in appearance, had genuine identification in his hand.
The patrolman's attitude immediately did a 180-degree turn. He stood up straight, gave a perfect salute, and said, "YESSIR!..."
The patrolman rattled off a long speech, essentially promising to bring the gangsters to justice, but Bai Lin paid no attention. A slip of paper, invisible to most, suddenly appeared before him, bearing a line of delicate handwriting:
Lin, a second potion attack appears, return immediately!
This was a message slip that Yan Nishuang gave him this morning. Bai Lin had just returned and hadn't had time to get a mobile phone yet. But even if he did, Bai Lin wouldn't bother using it. Once it was put into his magic bag or system space, it lost all signal. If he were to carry it with him, he would have to carry a small bag, which was too inconvenient for Bai Lin, who was used to small smartphones and traveling light.
Bai Lin grabbed Edogawa Hiroyuki's wrist, startling the young man. After all, Bai Lin's feat of taking on ten opponents single-handedly, with every punch landing squarely, was too astonishing. Even movies didn't depict such impressive fighting skills, making him a little flustered. Ignoring the patrolman's rambling, Bai Lin pulled him to the corner of the shipping container.
However, when Edogawa Hiroyuki's vision went black and he opened his eyes again, he found himself in front of the door of an inconspicuous little hotel. He immediately noticed the magical barrier surrounding the place and knew that this was the residence of mages.
Yan Nishuang was pacing back and forth anxiously in front of the gate. When she saw Bai Lin teleport over, she didn't care whether he had alerted the magic detection facilities or not, and walked straight over and said, "The outbreak point is not in Hong Kong, but in Manila!" Manila is the capital of the Philippines, 1600 kilometers away from Hong Kong.
She was taken aback when she saw that Bai Lin was not alone, but was holding a boy who looked like a high school student. Upon closer inspection, she realized that it was Edogawa Hiroyuki, which surprised her quite a bit.
"We met by chance. This kid is also investigating this case. I think he's somewhat useful," Bai Lin said, pointing to Edogawa Hiroyuki.
Edogawa Hiroyuki, however, stared intently at Yan Nishuang, his eyes practically glued to her. He exclaimed, somewhat infatuated, "Ah, big sister, you're so beautiful! You're just as beautiful as my sister!"
Bai Lin couldn't help but roll his eyes again. This kid was actually a low-level SP. I really didn't know that!
Yan Nishuang nodded expressionlessly, showing no respect whatsoever to Edogawa Hiroyuki.
Bai Lin smacked Edogawa Hiroyuki on the head, yelling, "This is Captain Yan from the Southwest Province enforcement team from the mainland! Show some respect, kid!"
Hiroyuki Edogawa cried out in pain, clutching his forehead, "Wasn't I respecting her enough? I treated her like my own older sister!"
Bai Lin and Yan Nishuang: "..."
Just then, Alex walked in from outside, breaking the awkward silence between the three, saying, "Captain Yan... Inspector Bai, the car is ready!"
Yan Nishuang waved her hand dismissively and said, "Get in the car, let's talk on the go!"
Alex clearly saw Hiroyuki Edogawa, but he didn't dare ask or say anything.
Nicole parked a Prado on the side of the road. Alex opened the back door for Yan Nishuang and got into the passenger seat. Bai Lin glanced at Edogawa Hiroyuki and decided to take him along. With his strength and numerous summoned beasts, protecting him shouldn't be a problem. Besides, the kid was in high spirits right now, and he would have to turn against him on the spot to make him go back.
But this clueless brat still wanted to sit in the middle next to Yan Nishuang, and of course he was once again served roasted chestnuts. Bai Lin swaggered over and sat down next to Yan Nishuang, and even glared at Edogawa Hiroyuki in a show of defiance.
As the car started, Alex explained, "We only received the news at 2 PM. A similar drug has been found in an entertainment venue controlled by an underground gang in Manila. There have already been casualties, but the exact situation is still unknown. One team has already contacted the Philippine Department of Magical Affairs and will treat it as a transnational case, sending people to assist in the investigation."
Bai Lin asked with some curiosity, "Where are we going?"
Alex replied, "Since it's daytime, we can't use flying devices. We'll take a car to meet up with another group and see if we can secure some spots for a multinational survey."
Bai Lin had a bad feeling; the other group probably didn't even take their group seriously...
At this moment, Hiroyuki Edogawa interjected, "I feel like something's not quite right. Although Manila is one of the larger cities in Southeast Asia that's relatively close to Hong Kong, it's still 1600 kilometers away. If they want to experiment with a virus, that's a huge distance! What exactly is their goal?"
Yan Nishuang frowned slightly and said, "The criminals' motives are still unknown. Perhaps it's just sabotage, or perhaps there's some other, bigger conspiracy. But that doesn't matter. Once we catch them, the truth will be clear. We must at least secure one spot. I must personally capture them and prevent them from carrying out this kind of evil attack again!"
"Wow! Big sister looks even prettier when she's serious!" Hiroyuki Edogawa's eyes turned into little hearts.
Bai Lin ignored him. He also felt that conducting a second poisoning operation so far away was highly unusual. First of all, with only a few days between the two operations, it was impossible to produce the strongest strain immediately. It was most likely just another experimental release, to find a populated area to observe the combat effectiveness and spread of the transformed zombies, in order to prepare for further improvements in the drug's efficacy and adjustments to its functions. And if it was just about finding a populated area for the experiment, the area around Hong Kong had a wide range of options. Even if they didn't want to provoke the East, the nearest options were Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar, with many relatively underdeveloped areas, or even areas controlled by private armed groups. Why go over a thousand kilometers away?
Although Bai Lin found the whole thing strange, he didn't know how to dispel his doubts for the time being.
Nicole activated the vehicle's secondary space-traversing ability, and the car seemed to enter a normal, out-of-control narrow space, rushing and crashing in a certain direction. Streetlights, trash cans, pedestrians, houses, and other roadside objects seemed to involuntarily jump aside to make way for their vehicle. Nicole drove very fast, and everyone could only see the scenery outside the window rushing past. After a while, Nicole slammed on the brakes, and the car came to a steady stop next to a small seaplane dock.
"Um... Is Group One planning to take a seaplane to Manila?" Bai Lin asked timidly. These seaplanes have limited flight altitude, are good for sightseeing, but not so good for long-distance flights. They are also very slow and frighteningly noisy, which is simply torture for wizards.
Yan Nishuang shook her head and said, "No need, they plan to use a sea-based airship!"
