Chapter 223 The Battle Between Good and Evil
If we're talking about fighting spirit, half of the two groups facing off on either side of the old house ruins were mentally broken.
On Voldemort's side, Malfoy, who was always a fence-sitter, was the first to break down. He and several other wizards who were already wealthy and powerful in the Muggle world and wizarding society had only joined Voldemort's ranks because of circumstances. Although they were not kind, they were actually not bad people, and they were the kind of people who couldn't bring themselves to kill even if it wasn't illegal.
He immediately recognized Dumbledore and Scrimgeour, one the undisputed greatest wizard in the wizarding world, and the other the incorruptible head of the Auror office. Facing these two head-on, he would most likely be dead. He thought of his vast wealth, his beautiful wife, and his handsome son, and felt like a thousand alpacas were galloping through his mind. He could only pray that, like he had done more than ten years ago, he would not be able to use the same trick of claiming to be controlled by the Imperius Curse again.
On the other hand, members of the Order of the Phoenix, such as Mundungus Fletcher, are the counterpart to Malfoy. They represent the limited number of good people. Joining the Order of the Phoenix was merely a temporary measure. If he didn't resist his half-blood identity, even if he were to become Voldemort's dog, they wouldn't want him. However, after joining the Order of the Phoenix, he didn't do anything good. In the original book, after Sirius Black's death, he almost ransacked the Black family and then sold Slytherin's locket to the main villain, Umbridge.
He might be good at petty theft, but fighting head-on with the Dark Lord's henchmen was far beyond his capabilities. At this moment, he was thinking about whether he could find a pit and play dead when the fight started...
However, apart from Dumbledore, who had seen Voldemort, who resembled a pig demon, through the ruins and sensed Tom Riddle's powerful and evil soul emanating from him, no one else recognized the Dark Lord. They simply assumed it was a monster kept by Death Eaters. If they had known that Voldemort, whose name they dared not even utter, was right in front of them, they probably would have Apparated and vanished without a trace the moment they saw him.
Someone always has to fire the first shot. With Voldemort's roar, the Death Eater closest to Scrimgeour launched the first attack.
He chanted the spell very softly, but Scrimgeour easily deflected it. As the head of the Auror office, Scrimgeour was a veteran and was already adept at dealing with ordinary dark wizards.
The Aurors and Death Eaters joined the fray, exchanging spells with remarkable "coordination" before quickly seeking cover. The exchange was a chaotic flurry of activity, like fireworks, but with nearly thirty meters between them, the spells were poorly aimed, only adding pressure to their opponents.
Led by Black, the Order of the Phoenix launched an attack on the Death Eaters. After all, he was desperate to save his son, Harry, who else could he rely on if not him to lead the charge?
Lupin, Tonks, Hagrid, and others followed closely behind. Perhaps inspired by Bai Lin's fighting style, Black did not randomly throw Stunning or Disarming Charms beyond his range. Instead, he used Shattering Charms and Thunder Blast to clear the way, bombarding the general area where the Death Eaters were located. Even if he did not hit anyone, he could still create smoke, flying debris, and dust, effectively blocking the Death Eaters' vision.
Bai Lin, amidst the ruins, chanted a spell, summoning a thick black mist that spread deep into the cemetery where Harry was. Using the mist as cover, he used his shadow to dissipate and approach Harry.
Voldemort felt immense pressure from Dumbledore. Decades ago, after witnessing Dumbledore's formidable power, he harbored a deep-seated fear of him. No matter how cold-blooded, powerful, and invincible he appeared on the outside, he always believed that his magic was inferior to Dumbledore's. Therefore, even at the height of his power, he dared not challenge Dumbledore directly. This is why Ron and the others always believed that Voldemort was afraid of Dumbledore.
Indeed, this is true. In the original books, Voldemort repeatedly avoided fighting Dumbledore until he plotted to kill Dumbledore, at which point he dared to openly show himself and stir up trouble.
In the battle against the Department of Mysteries, Voldemort went all out, while Dumbledore used defensive magic to break Voldemort's spells and protect the children and the Ministry of Magic buildings. Voldemort used almost all of his powerful spells, but none of them broke Dumbledore's defenses.
From Bai Lin's perspective, the encyclopedia could already detect the difference in magical power between Dumbledore and Voldemort. Dumbledore had always been hiding his abilities, and Bai Lin even felt that he might have surpassed him. But now, when Dumbledore held the Elder Wand and was casting a defensive spell on the members of the Order of the Phoenix with all his might, his magical power was a staggering 126 points.
Bai Lin felt that even in the entire world, there were no more than 20 wizards with magic power of 100 or more. Voldemort's magic power was currently stuck at 106, which was quite a gap compared to Dumbledore. Bai Lin was very glad that he had dragged Dumbledore over. With him there, Voldemort was doomed.
The members of the Order of the Phoenix had already clashed with another group of Death Eaters, but as soon as Bai Lin spotted him from the side and behind, Malfoy, with his signature blond hair, retreated instead of advancing, trying to escape to the side. But when he turned around, he saw Harry still in the hands of the Angel of Death statue and suddenly had an idea.
Voldemort, the pig-headed demon, glanced at his henchmen on either side. Whether these henchmen would remain loyal and follow him in conquering the world depended on this battle, and he planned to establish his authority first.
Voldemort let out a howl, somewhat comically, but with his hands raised high, he had already prepared his signature move: the Fiendfyre spell. A huge fireball formed in the air. Ordinary dark wizards' Fiendfyre spells usually start with a small flame, then search for flammable material to gradually build up. But Voldemort's Fiendfyre spell transformed the fireball into a monstrous dragon, which swept towards the Order of the Phoenix's camp with unstoppable force.
"Holy crap, he really is a master of dark magic. My few spells are nothing compared to his!" Bai Lin swallowed hard in the black mist, thankful that he hadn't been foolish enough to be the first to stick his neck out.
The enormous fire dragon pounced directly on the old house, causing it to collapse completely. The dragon then unleashed a furious attack on its leader, Blake, with flames several times more intense than those of the Hungarian Tree Bee Dragon.
"Clear Spring!" Dumbledore pointed his wand at a well in front of the old house, and the old pump on the well instantly burst open. The well water gushed out like a water dragon, meeting the fire dragon's breath.
Voldemort knew that if he didn't defeat Dumbledore today, he would be utterly defeated and never recover. He roared and waved his hands to the sides, and two balls of blood-red flame formed two giant serpents, which split into two groups and rushed towards Dumbledore to encircle him.
The wizards on both sides were locked in a fierce exchange of fire, with wizards frequently struck by magical energy, convulsing and collapsing to the ground. However, the majority of the Order of the Phoenix members were generally at a disadvantage, as their offensive spells were limited in power, with the most powerful being something like Thunder Explosion, while their opponents were facing either Killing Curses or Cruciatus Curses. Fortunately, Snape, with his cloak covering his face, blended into the ranks of the Order of the Phoenix members and occasionally threw a Divine Strike at the Death Eaters, slightly balancing the offensive on both sides.
Meanwhile, on the Auror side, the Death Eaters were already being overwhelmed. Scrimgeour led his men in excellent coordination, while Drobby used mirror magic to create more than a dozen "dummy" figures to help the Aurors draw fire. The Death Eaters often managed to hit them, only to find that they had only broken a mirror. In addition, the Death Eaters fought individually and did not know how to cover each other, so they could only dodge and had no ability to attack.
Meanwhile, on Bai Lin's side, Malfoy secretly retreated into the shadows. He had already noticed the black mist spreading through the graveyard, and initially thought it was some kind of spell by Voldemort. Thinking it perfect, he plunged into the mist, intending to use it to hide and then sneak up to Harry's side. If Dumbledore's side won, he would say he was a traitor among the Death Eaters, mainly there to rescue Harry; if Voldemort's side won, he would say he planned to kidnap Harry to threaten Dumbledore, preventing him from going all out.
Malfoy couldn't help but give himself a mental thumbs up for his cleverness. Given the Malfoy family's status and wealth in the wizarding world, as long as he said this, no matter whether Voldemort or Dumbledore won, no one would do anything to him. It was a foolproof plan.
Malfoy was indulging in self-praise when suddenly everything went black. A fist the size of a cooking pot came flying at him, hitting him squarely on the forehead. He saw stars and felt dizzy. Immediately afterward, Bai Lin delivered a chop to the back of his neck. Before Malfoy could even see who it was, everything went black, and he collapsed to the ground.
Looking at the middle-aged man dressed in gold and silver and brand-name clothes, Bai Lin thought: This guy's family isn't too bad, is it? In the original story, he was pushed forward to do bad things several times but backed down. In the final battle, he chose to protect his family and did not participate in Voldemort's siege of Hogwarts teachers and students when he had already gained the upper hand. It can be said that he had a change of heart.
Although there was no major fault, Bai Lin just couldn't bring himself to like him. Seeing his eyes rolled back and him helplessly being slaughtered, Bai Lin couldn't help but chuckle. With a wave of his hand, all of Bai Lin's valuables were looted, as a way of robbing the rich to help the poor and a small punishment to warn him of his greater faults.
"Hey! Kid! Getting hooked on the show?" Bai Lin shouted to Harry from the shadows.
Harry was overjoyed to discover that Bai Lin had already lurked there. Bai Lin pointed a finger, and the stone sculpture that had trapped Harry shattered into pieces, causing Harry to fall to the ground.
Voldemort, who was fully engaged in a magical battle with Dumbledore, heard the explosion behind him. He turned around and saw Harry picking up the wand that had been thrown into the corner, with Bai Lin guarding him.
"Outrageous!" Voldemort controlled the fire dragon with one hand, pointed his wand back, and cast a silent spell.
"It's Thunder Blast!" Bai Lin reacted instantly. Voldemort was also human. When his main focus was on controlling the Fiendfyre spell, using this kind of area-of-effect attack magic was the first choice. And his Thunder Blast was no ordinary spell. Bai Lin originally thought that the deceased Barnard's level of magic had reached Voldemort's standard, but seeing it today, he realized that relying on absorbing other people's magic to accumulate quantity could never compare to the qualitative difference between these magical geniuses. Barnard's Thunder Blast could affect a range of more than ten meters, and its power was equivalent to a large hand grenade. Voldemort's speed of attack and the amount of magic output were far beyond Barnard's reach.
Bai Lin shielded Harry behind him and immediately activated the Mermaid's Blessing, instantly enveloping his entire body in a water shield. At the same time, a violent explosion, accompanied by towering flames, occurred in the center of the cemetery. Its power was even stronger than the shoulder-fired rockets widely used in the Middle East. The shockwave shattered the tombstones throughout the cemetery, and flames and debris scattered in all directions. Even with the water shield protecting him, Bai Lin and Harry were still pushed back more than ten steps. When the smoke cleared, a one-meter-deep crater was clearly visible in the center of the cemetery. Voldemort's casual attack was terrifyingly powerful.
Bai Lin glanced down at Harry, who was covered in dust and dirt. He looked disheveled, but his eyes were firm and stubborn, showing no fear of Voldemort.
Harry, who was often frightened awake by Voldemort in his dreams, actually witnessed the resurrection of this pig-headed monster. Suddenly, he was no longer so afraid, but instead felt endless longing for his parents and anger towards Voldemort.
Harry's young mind went through many stages in dealing with the issue of Voldemort. From the initial discovery that everyone was afraid of him, which aroused his curiosity about Voldemort, to learning that his parents were killed by him, Harry's feelings were very complicated during that time. An eleven-year-old child did not know what hatred was or how to express it. When he saw the little monster on the back of Professor Quirrell's head, Harry was terrified. He finally realized that this person, who had only existed in his imagination, was real.
If you were to ask Harry whether he hated Voldemort, he wouldn't have a clear answer. But if you were to ask him if he would kill Voldemort if he were standing right in front of him, Harry knew he couldn't bring himself to do it, even knowing that Voldemort had killed his parents. This was, of course, due to Harry's innate kindness and the moral compass he had developed. But execution was one thing, and fighting to the death was another. No matter how kind Harry was, after learning about Voldemort's actions over the years, his anger towards him grew day by day. If it weren't for Bai Lin's appearance, he would definitely still have joined the Order of the Phoenix, just like in the original stories, and dedicated his life to fighting Voldemort, the Death Eaters, and other dark wizards.
Bai Lin glanced at Harry's magic power: 48 points. This was outstanding among fourth-year students, but the gap between him and Voldemort was still enormous. However, given his protagonist's aura, the fact that he could fight Voldemort head-on in the original story without being defeated was quite surprising.
