Alaska Gold Rush Diary
Chapter 3 Departure
"Drunken Wolf" Dawn is a legendary figure here, with a mysterious identity, a muscular physique, and a tall and imposing stature.
He had a shocking scar on his right cheek, and his exposed arms also showed many scars, making him look like a man with a story to tell.
The nickname "Drunken Wolf" originated four years ago when a group of young thugs from out of town stopped him on the roadside while he was completely drunk and demanded money from him.
As a result, he beat six burly young black men half to death while drunk.
The nickname "Drunken Wolf" spread because of this incident.
He was a lumberjack who spent almost all his time drinking, except for work, and was always drunk.
Zhou Xin really liked this Liangshan hero-like figure and often took the initiative to invite him for drinks.
Dawn accepted all offers, but never expressed gratitude; at most, he would simply swirl his glass or bottle around.
Zhou Xin chatted with Creek and the others. Seeing that they couldn't persuade Zhou Xin, they kindly offered him various suggestions.
Just then, a chuckle came from a table not far away.
"Poor guy, he's gone crazy for money, he actually wants to go gold panning, it's hilarious, hahaha..."
The group turned to look, and saw that the speaker was a well-dressed young man with an arrogant and mocking expression on his face.
Slant, son of Salcha's richest man, Doru, is a typical rich second-generation.
"Slant, didn't your father teach you basic manners?" Creek protested.
Zhou Xin waved his hand, indicating that he wouldn't bother with him: "It's okay, let's continue drinking."
But Slant wouldn't let it go, saying to the beautiful woman beside him, "Casey, it's a good thing you broke up with him. He was a complete clown, hahaha."
Zhou Xin was furious, but he remained outwardly calm.
Casey was his ex-girlfriend. The two met through an outdoor activity, dated for more than half a year, and were eventually stolen away by the wealthy Slant.
Slant is a despicable person. Casey doesn't actually like him and only dates him for money.
After calming down, Zhou Xinchong Slant smiled slightly and said, "It seems you are very concerned about the fact that your abilities are inferior to mine."
He glanced at Casey, who was standing silently with her head down, and continued, "She was much more radiant when she was with me than she is now."
Slant indulged in wine and women, and was also said to be addicted to drugs, so his body was naturally worn out long ago.
Hearing Zhou Xin's mockery, Slant's expression changed, and he angrily cursed, "Damn yellow-skinned pig, say that again if you dare!"
As soon as he said that, everyone in the bar turned to look at him.
Discrimination against Chinese people is still common in the area, but Zhou Xin still managed to make some friends who didn't care about his skin color thanks to his personal charm.
The first to stand up for him was none other than Dawn, who rarely spoke. He coldly said, "If you dare disturb my drinking again, I'll break your neck!"
Creek added, "It's a good thing the Hills aren't here, or your neck would have been snapped."
The Hills family were Inuit people living in town, and they also had yellow skin.
Slant's face turned pale. He realized he had said the wrong thing, and intimidated by the reputation of "Drunken Wolf," he dared not speak loudly again.
Zhou Xin suddenly had a brilliant idea.
He looked at Slant and said with a smile, "Judging from your tone just now, you don't believe I can find gold. How about we make a bet?"
Slant glanced at Dawn, who was slumped over the table, seemingly asleep, before cautiously asking, "How do we bet?"
Zhou Xin took out his phone and looked at it, saying, "The current market price of gold is $2203 per ounce. Our bet is simple: if I find enough gold, you not only have to buy it from me at the market price, but you also have to buy drinks for everyone in the bar."
For Slant, this bet wasn't actually a loss.
Gold is a hard currency, and the gold market is currently performing very well, making gold hoarding a very popular and promising investment.
As for treating everyone in the bar to drinks, that's nothing to Salcha's son, the richest man in the world.
Slant's eyes flickered, and he asked again, "What if you don't find the gold?"
"Then I'll work for your dad's fish cannery for free for a month!" Zhou Xin said firmly.
"Okay, I'll bet with you!"
Slant couldn't hide the excitement on his face, as if he had already won the bet.
He didn't believe that a newcomer who had never panned for gold before could find gold in the vast Alaskan landscape.
He also knew that the gold he found was in a completely different form than the gold he bought, so Zhou Xin could not possibly have used the gold he bought to make up the difference.
If he were to work for his family's cannery for free for a month, he could humiliate him to his heart's content.
Creek and Bemon quickly urged Zhou Xin to calm down and withdraw his bet.
Even Dawn, who was usually cold and silent, spoke up: "Don't bet with him, you can't win."
Zhou Xinchong smiled gratefully and said, "Thank you, Mr. Drunken Wolf. I am honored to receive your concern, but please believe me, I will not lose."
Dawn shook his head, said nothing more, and drank the wine in the bottle in one gulp.
Zhou Xin made this bet, which seemed like a sure thing for Slant, but he actually had his own reasons for doing so.
Having acquired the scent of gold, he was confident that he would definitely gain something from this trip; the only question was how much.
While gold is a hard currency, converting it into cash still requires a lot of work.
But as long as Slant accepts the bet, the gold he earns will easily turn into US dollars.
After leaving the Brown Bear Bar, Zhou Xin returned to his residence and had a good night's sleep.
The next morning, he set off on his way to Livinggood.
Heading north, you're surrounded by rolling mountains and spruce forests; the snow gets thicker and the population thins out.
Occasionally, reindeer would dart out from the roadside, almost giving Zhou Xin an extra meal.
More than three hours later, he finally arrived at Livinggood.
Amidst the snow-covered landscape, rows of wooden houses nestled in the mountains and forests seemed to have fallen silent.
In previous years, during the warm months of June and July, many adventurers would come here to challenge the Dalton Highway; at other times, the area was almost completely isolated from the outside world.
Zhou Xin did not enter the town. Instead, he parked his car at a gas station outside the town, changed into snowshoes, put on his backpack, and stepped into the jungle.
The weather is nice today; it's a sunny day.
Sunlight streamed through the gaps in the branches, making the snow sparkle and shimmer.
Although much of the snow on the ground had melted, it was still more than ten centimeters thick, and it crunched underfoot.
The world was a vast expanse of white, and it was so quiet that there wasn't even a bird's chirp, except for the occasional sound of snow falling from the branches.
This environment is quite good; the chances of wolves appearing are much smaller.
Moreover, even if a wolf comes, you can hear the noise from a great distance.
After walking for more than two hours, Zhou Xin arrived at a stream.
The stream was not completely frozen, and the sound of flowing water could be heard from the bottom.
Zhou Xin twitched his nose and smelled that sweet aroma.
Ever since he learned that the special taste belonged to gold, his brain automatically defined that taste as sweet.
It's sweeter and more tempting than any other delicacy.
However, the taste was very bland, indicating that although there was gold here, the amount was extremely small and not worth mining.
However, Zhou Xin still decided to test whether his ability was effective.
He took out a small hammer and smashed the solid ice on the stream surface, revealing the water flowing underneath.
He then bent down and carefully sniffed the stream, finding a spot where the scent was most pronounced.
He scooped up a pile of mud and sand with a shovel, brought it to his nose, and smelled it.
That's right, it has a subtle sweet taste.
The smell of gold.
