Struggling to survive at Hogwarts

Chapter 30 The Magic Wand

The three didn't talk for long, because Hagrid had been waiting outside for a long time.

Thea noticed that Harry kept looking towards the door, so she kindly offered to say goodbye.

Draco readily agreed, but Harry hesitated and looked at Thea. Thea, at a loss, could only suggest, "Harry, if you'd like, you can buy an owl so it can send letters to me and Draco."

Harry was instantly overjoyed, and even though he felt a little reluctant to part with her, he still waved goodbye to Thea.

He watched Thea and Draco walk out of the store without blinking before looking away.

"I shouldn't be so greedy, Harry," Harry silently reminded himself.

As Draco stepped out of the robe shop, he couldn't help but ask, "Thea, why are you so interested in him? Just because he's the savior?"

Thea's expression remained unchanged as she chuckled, "What? Jealous?"

Draco's face immediately turned red, and he stammered, "Who...who's jealous? I just don't like him!"

Thea found it somewhat amusing, but to avoid upsetting the young master, she proactively changed the subject: "Let's go then, Uncle and the others are waiting for us! Maybe they've already bought everything."

Thea was right. When the two found the two adults at the ice cream shop, they had already bought all the books and other equipment they needed for school and carefully stored everything away using a shrinking spell.

Next up is today's main event - the magic wand.

The four of them arrived at Ollivanders Wand Shop together. Thea looked at the dilapidated shop with some disdain, but Narcissa explained, "Although Ollivanders Wand Shop is a bit run-down, there's a whole different world inside."

Thea pushed open the door and went inside with some skepticism.

The shop was dimly lit, and Thea and Draco could only see rows of long boxes piled up to the ceiling.

"Oh, welcome! You two little wizards!" Thea and Draco were almost startled by the sudden voice.

Looking in the direction of the sound, an elderly man with gray hair emerged from the dimly lit cabinet.

Draco became somewhat wary and instinctively stepped forward to block Thea's path.

The old man seemed to realize the young wizard's wariness, and waved his wand, instantly brightening the room.

Using the light, the old man recognized him and said, "Oh, Mr. Malfoy, welcome. I remember... your father's wand was made of elm wood, wasn't it?"

Before Draco could nod, the old man continued, "Hmm...of noble birth, possessing innate magical talent..."

Thea and Draco were relieved when the old man immediately mentioned the material of his elders' wands.

"Which of you two little wizards should go first?"

Draco glanced at Thea questioningly before saying, "Sir, I'll go first."

"Which hand does Mr. Malfoy use most?" Ollivander asked.

“Right hand, sir,” Draco said politely.

Ollivander then unfolded a measuring tape and measured Draco's dimensions, first from his shoulder to his fingertips, then from his wrist to his fingers, from his shoulder to the floor, and even measured the distance between his nostrils.

Thea almost burst out laughing when she saw Draco's strained expression.

After waiting for Ollivander to finish taking the measurements, he turned and walked into the cabinet, muttering to himself, "...It's about choosing a wizard with a wand...Let me see...which one is it?"

A short while later, the old man brought over several boxes, selected a wand from them, and handed it to Draco.

The wand emitted a warm white light in Draco's hand.

“Oh! Excellent! Hawthorn wood, a unicorn's hand, a paradoxical wand paired with a core representing goodness, complex and intriguing, a wand particularly suited for casting healing magic, Mr. Malfoy, you are very much like it.”

After Draco chose his wand, Thea stepped forward.

Ollivander looked the young wizard up and down, not recognizing her at first glance.

Thea endured Ollivander's scrutinizing gaze, barely maintaining her composure, and smiled, "Hello, Mr. Ollivander, I am Dorothea Black."

Ollivander then realized what was happening and quickly tried to salvage the situation, saying, "So it's Miss Black."

He didn't mention Thea's parents, but asked directly, "Miss Black, which hand do you prefer?"

“I’m right-handed,” Thea replied.

Then it was the same process again, and Ollivander began to measure Thea's various dimensions.

Seeing Thea's furrowed brow, Draco burst into unrestrained laughter.

Thea rolled her eyes at him, and he finally quieted down.

Thea took the wand from the old man and waved it gently; only a wisp of white light appeared at the tip of the wand.

“Hmm…something’s not quite right…” Ollivander commented.

Thea then took several more wands, some of which emitted only a white light, while others produced a long flame.

Until the very last one, as soon as Thea got her hands on this wand, a feeling suddenly popped into her head: this is the one!

Sure enough, with a gentle wave of her hand, Thea unleashed a flame from her staff, which shot straight toward Ollivander.

Fortunately, Ollivander reacted quickly and blocked the flames with a wave of his wand.

Looking at the two surprised young wizards, Ollivander smiled wryly and said, "Yes, there's no doubt about it. This wand has chosen you, and you are the most suitable for this wand."

"Cedar wood, the heartstrings of a dragon, a wise and insightful young wizard, and a powerful staff core—without a doubt, Miss Black, you have the potential to become a formidable opponent."

Ollivander paused, then turned to Thea and said, “I’m sorry, Miss Black, my rudeness has caused you trouble. I hope my apology isn’t too late.”

Thea was somewhat surprised and puzzled, so Ollivander explained, "Because wand science tells me never to deceive someone who has a cedar wand, especially if that person has great potential."

Thea ultimately said nothing, and pulled the still clueless Draco out of the wand shop.

After the four reunited, Draco passed by the owl shop and immediately took a liking to one of the owls. Although the Malfoys had no shortage of owls, Lucius and Narcissa naturally agreed since Draco wanted it.

Thea looked at the owl and noticed that it had no ear tufts, looked a bit fierce, and had yellow claws and big orange-yellow eyes.

She asked Draco curiously, "Why did you choose this owl?"

Draco explained, "Because it's fierce!"

Thea looked the owl over again, and finally nodded, admitting, "It is a bit fierce." But it's mostly cute, I guess.

Draco couldn't help but smile after gaining Thea's approval.

Narcissa noticed that Thea didn't have a pet yet, and wanted to take Thea to pick one out too, but Thea refused, as she wasn't interested in pets.

Seeing that Thea really didn't want it, Narcissa didn't force her.

When Thea returned to her room that evening, she happily ticked a line in her notebook that read: "Approach Harry and make a good impression on him."
