Reborn Fairy Wife Takes Me on a Gaggle-Fire rampage
Chapter 77 A Battle Between Men
In the afternoon, Mu Chen's father led Mu Chen to a stone table in the courtyard. On the table lay an exquisite chess set, the black and white pieces already arranged, awaiting a battle of wits. Mu Chen's father smiled, his eyes gleaming with anticipation, as if saying, "My child, let's have a contest between men."
Meanwhile, in another corner of the old house, Wen Shu was gently led by Mu Chen's mother into a room filled with laughter. Inside, several elegantly dressed women sat around a mahogany mahjong table, their faces beaming with excitement and anticipation. Wen Shu, new to the place, was slightly unfamiliar with the setting, but she quickly blended into the warm atmosphere.
At first, Wen Shu was unfamiliar with the rules of mahjong. She carefully touched the tiles, observing the actions of other players, trying to find some clues. But as time went on, she gradually began to grasp the patterns of mahjong. She learned how to judge her opponents' needs by the tiles they played, and how to cleverly cooperate with Mu Chen's mother to play the tiles she needed at the right time.
Mu Chen's mother smiled with satisfaction, delighted by Wen Shu's intelligence and wit. The two women's seamless teamwork drew envy from the other women, who began to whisper amongst themselves, some even envious of Mu Chen's mother for having such a clever and capable daughter-in-law. Wen Shu's presence added much laughter and joy to the afternoon.
As time passed, the afterglow of the setting sun bathed the entire courtyard, and cheerful laughter echoed through the old house. Mu Chen and his father's chess game was nearing its end, both their faces beaming with satisfaction. Wen Shu and Mu Chen's mother also finished their mahjong game, their faces similarly radiating the joy of victory. That day, the old house was filled with harmony and happiness.
On this cold night, the wind began to rage around the old house, and the branches creaked in the wind. After saying goodbye to their parents, Mu Chen and Wen Shu set off on their journey back to the manor. In the darkness, their car slowly drove away, leaving behind a trail of warm lights.
On her way home, a light snowflake suddenly began to fall, like white scraps of paper scattered from the sky. Wen Shu sat in the car, her gaze drawn to the scenery outside the window. She saw a familiar figure—a colleague who had eaten several chicken legs for her at lunchtime at the company. Her name was Ahua; because her name contained the character "Hua," her colleagues affectionately called her that. Ahua was dragging a heavy suitcase, struggling against the cold wind, her figure appearing somewhat unsteady.
A nameless worry welled up in Wen Shu's heart, and she made Mu Chen stop the car. The car window slowly rolled down, and she called out, "Ahua, Ahua!" Ahua heard the call and looked up, and Wen Shu finally saw her face clearly. However, what she saw was not only Ahua's face, but also the bruises on it. Ahua seemed to want to respond, but suddenly fell heavily to the ground, unable to move.
Wen Shu hurriedly jumped out of the car, with Mu Chen following closely behind. Mu Chen quickly put Ahua's suitcase into the trunk, then carefully carried Ahua on his back and placed her on the back seat. Wen Shu sat next to Ahua, watching her with concern. She noticed that blood was still seeping from Ahua's back, which made her even more anxious. She urged Mu Chen to speed up, and Mu Chen's foot almost broke through the accelerator, as the car sped towards the hospital.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Mu Chen saw the hospital director already waiting at the entrance. The nurses quickly lifted Ahua onto a stretcher and took her into the emergency room. Mu Chen noticed the bloodstains on Wen Shu's clothes and instructed the housekeeper to prepare a change of clothes for her.
In the hospital corridor, Mu Chen didn't ask Wen Shu who Ahua was. Wen Shu watched Ahua being taken into the emergency room and finally breathed a sigh of relief. She explained to Mu Chen that Ahua was her colleague, not a local. Ahua's mother had died of illness when she was very young, and her father had passed away when she was in high school. They had been classmates at the same school, and Wen Shu believed that Ahua must have encountered something serious.
Wen Shu sat on a bench in the hospital, her heart filled with worry for Ahua. She rarely spoke when she thought about the company.
When the emergency room door opened, a tense atmosphere filled the air. The doctor strode in, his face serious, and said to Wen Shu, "The patient has clearly been exposed to the cold wind; his temperature is very high, and we are doing our best to control it." His voice carried a sense of urgency. The doctor then described the patient's injuries in detail: "His back was cut by glass, but fortunately, these wounds have been properly treated. However, we have also found some worrying signs; the patient has obvious bruises, indicating that he may have been assaulted."
Wen Shu stood there, filled with confusion and worry. He tried to replay Ahua's recent activities in his mind, searching for any clues that might have led to this situation. Ahua was a kind person, always benevolent and never made enemies. Wen Shu simply couldn't understand what Ahua could have offended to suffer such cruel treatment.
The housekeeper carefully handed the clothes to Wen Shu, while Ahua was slowly wheeled out of the emergency room. Mu Chen thoughtfully arranged a VIP ward and a professional caregiver. Afterwards, Mu Chen and Wen Shu sat together in the ward, patiently waiting for Ahua to wake up. About an hour or two later, Ahua slowly opened her eyes, her gaze fixed on the ceiling. At this moment, the caregiver softly informed Wen Shu that Ahua had woken up.
Wen Shu gently stepped forward, her eyes filled with concern and sympathy. Ahua, the girl who was always smiling, was now teary-eyed, as if all her sorrow and pain had turned into tears, streaming down her face. A wave of indescribable sorrow welled up in Wen Shu's heart. She reached out and gently wiped Ahua's tears with a tissue. She asked softly, "Ahua, what happened? If you'd like, can you tell me? Should we call the police?"
Ahua choked up, seemingly trying to calm herself. She took a deep breath and began to recount her ordeal in fits and starts.
"My cousin had to borrow money from loan sharks due to some emergency. We thought it was just a temporary loan that she could repay quickly, but things weren't that simple. The interest rates snowballed, and my cousin soon became unable to repay them."
