Chapter 37 Seeing Lin Ya Again
Xu Hao pushed open the door and had just put his bag down when the doorbell rang.
"Ding-dong-"
Xu Hao looked through the peephole and couldn't help but smile. Standing outside the door was Lin Ya.
"Sister Lin, you're here." Xu Hao opened the door and greeted her with a smile.
Lin Ya was dressed in a smart business suit, her long hair flowing over her shoulders, and her makeup exquisite. She walked into the house with a smile, her gaze sweeping over Xu Hao.
"Xiao Hao, I haven't seen you for the past few days. How are you?" Lin Ya said with a smile. "You look much better than before."
Xu Hao felt a warmth in his heart. Lin Ya was always like this, observant and considerate. He couldn't help but recall his most destitute period; if it weren't for Lin Ya's care, he would probably be homeless by now.
"Yes, thanks to Sister Lin." Xu Hao replied with a smile. "Come, sit down. Let me pour you a glass of water."
Lin Ya sat on the sofa, her gaze sweeping around the room. Xu Hao went into the kitchen, took out two glasses, and poured them into chilled lemonade.
"Have you found a job recently?" Lin Ya took the water glass, took a sip, and asked.
Xu Hao sat opposite him, pondering for a moment. He couldn't reveal anything about the Bureau of Mysteries, so he simply said, "I found a new job at Zhongtian International."
"Zhongtian International?" A hint of nervousness flashed in Lin Ya's eyes. "That... Shi Shaowei's company?"
Xu Hao's heart tightened. He quickly added, "Actually, he's just an ordinary employee, a new hire, still in his probationary period."
Lin Ya nodded, a hint of unease flashing in her eyes. She put down her water glass and looked directly into Xu Hao's eyes: "Xiao Hao, you know I've always treated you like a younger brother. If anything happens to that Shi Shaowei, you... you must tell me."
Hi... I'm still thinking about that!
After repeated assurances that it was just an ordinary job and that he didn't want to do anything else, Lin Ya finally put her mind at ease once again.
Xu Hao felt a surge of emotion; his older sister truly cared about him.
Lin Ya stared at Xu Hao for a few seconds, seemingly trying to read something from his expression. Finally, she sighed softly and adopted a more relaxed tone: "Alright, since you put it that way, then be careful. By the way, I heard things haven't been very peaceful in the city lately, so try not to go out at night."
Xu Hao's heart skipped a beat. Lin Ya's words reminded him of the eerie things lurking in the darkness. He forced himself to remain calm and smiled, "Don't worry, Sister Lin, I'll be careful."
Lin Ya stood up, preparing to leave. Xu Hao saw her to the door, when suddenly Lin Ya turned around, her expression serious: "Xiao Hao, remember, no matter what happens, tell your sister immediately!"
Okay, okay! I won't go astray! I'm perfectly straight! I can't bend!
Lin Ya didn't wait for his reply and turned to leave. Xu Hao closed the door, leaned against it, and let out a long sigh. He felt a wave of exhaustion wash over him, not just physically, but even more so mentally.
These past few days have been quite eventful, involving fighting and killing in the real world, joining the Bureau of Mysterious Affairs, and leveling up in the game world around the clock.
He walked to the window and gazed at the night outside. The city lights shone brightly, yet they couldn't conceal the lurking dangers. Xu Hao knew he had embarked on a path of no return. The strange, the incantations, the elixirs—things that once existed only in legends—had now become a part of his life as he gradually mastered the game system.
By the way, Sister Lin Ya said things aren't going well tonight? What does that mean?
Lin Ya drove away from Xu Hao's apartment building. The night was as dark as ink, and the streetlights cast dappled shadows on the car window. She absentmindedly turned on the radio, trying to dispel the unease in her heart.
"Recently, a number of missing persons cases have occurred in the city. Police are urging citizens to be vigilant..."
"What?! It's already been made public?" The voice from the radio startled Lin Ya, and she instinctively locked the car door. The city night seemed even more eerie than usual; the streets were deserted, and an unsettling atmosphere permeated the air.
Lin Ya gripped the steering wheel tightly, her mind filled with the various rumors she had heard over the past few days.
Last Friday, while she was shopping at the supermarket, she overheard two middle-aged women whispering: "Did you hear? Another person has gone missing in the East District. How many times is this now?"
I had dinner with friends over the weekend, and someone mentioned that their neighbor's child went out to play last night and hadn't come back yet. At the dinner table, everyone started discussing it: "Could it be that gang from that small southern country? I heard they specifically target young people."
Someone else confidently declared, "My cousin's a policeman, and he says this is incredibly eerie; it's definitely not something a human could do." Another person chimed in, "I think it's probably some kind of monster at work. Haven't you noticed those strange noises lately?"
Lin Ya shook her head, trying to shake off these unsettling thoughts. But she knew that the dark side of the city was quietly expanding, and danger was ever-present. She couldn't help but think of Xu Hao again, hoping he was safe and sound.
This is why Lin Ya reminded Xu Hao to be careful.
Lin Ya couldn't help but picture Xu Hao's face. That once down-on-his-luck young man now exuded an indescribable aura. Recalling their conversation at Xu Hao's house, she felt he was hiding something from her.
"Xiao Hao, what's wrong with you?" Lin Ya murmured to herself, her brows furrowed.
Suddenly, a dark shadow flashed in front of the car. Lin Ya slammed on the brakes, and the car screeched to a halt on the road. Still shaken, she looked ahead, but saw nothing.
"A hallucination?" Lin Ya took a deep breath, trying to calm her rapid heartbeat.
Lin Ya took a deep breath and slowly released the brake. The car glided forward, and she warily scanned her surroundings. Suddenly, a chill ran down her spine, as if an invisible hand was caressing her back.
"Who?!" Lin Ya turned around abruptly, only to see an empty back seat.
Just then, a pale face flashed in the rearview mirror, and a pair of jet-black eyes stared straight at her. Lin Ya's heart clenched, and she instinctively stepped on the gas. The car shot off like an arrow.
"Impossible...impossible..." Lin Ya muttered to herself, cold sweat soaking her clothes. She was absolutely certain that face was the same eerie face from the orphanage incident.
The car sped along the empty streets, Lin Ya's hands gripping the steering wheel tightly, her knuckles turning white. She dared not look back, nor dared she glance in the rearview mirror, for fear of seeing that terrifying face again.
Suddenly, a sharp laugh rang out inside the car, like fingernails scratching against glass. Lin Ya was horrified to find that frost was forming on the car windows and the temperature had plummeted.
"Don't come any closer!" Lin Ya screamed, catching a glimpse of a pale hand reaching out from the back seat, almost touching her shoulder.
The pale face reappeared in the rearview mirror, this time clearer. Those jet-black eyes stared intently at her, as if trying to suck her soul into them.
A chilling aura emanated from the back seat, and Lin Ya felt a cold hand rest on her shoulder. Fear overwhelmed her reason like a tidal wave; she instinctively closed her eyes and raised her hands to block the impending attack.
At that critical moment, the glass ring on Lin Ya's right ring finger suddenly emitted a soft yellow light. It was a gift from Xu Hao, and she always wore it. The yellow light acted as a barrier, blocking out the cold aura.
It let out a piercing scream, as if it had been burned. Its body twisted and turned in the yellow light, but its dark eyes remained fixed on Lin Ya.
"It's you! It's you!" The eerie voice was filled with anger and disbelief. "You smell like him!"
