The Walking Dead: I Sell Arms as a Sixth-Rate Seller in the Apocalypse
Chapter 6 The Killing on the Second Floor of the Bookstore
early morning
Madison Outdoor Store
Rick got up before the alarm rang. After a quick wash, he took out a map of downtown Atlanta, closed his eyes and recalled the plot of The Walking Dead, then picked up a pen and marked it.
Marvin got up and continued to examine the Remington M700, but today Marvin had a more menacing aura than yesterday. He knew that today's events were by no means simple. He could not exert his full fighting power at the moment. Due to a broken left leg, he could not act with Rick. In order not to be a burden to Rick, Marvin volunteered to serve as Rick's sniper.
Seeing Marvin's tense nerves and serious expression, Rick waved his hand and teased Marvin, "Hey, buddy, so serious so early in the morning? Are you really that grumpy when you wake up?"
Hearing Rick's words, Marvin's tense nerves relaxed somewhat, and he replied, "I'm just worried that I'll be a burden to you."
Upon hearing this, Rick put his arm around Marvin's shoulder and comforted him, "Marvin, relax. Although the risks of this operation are unknown, I have great faith in your shooting skills. With you covering me, I'm not worried about being eaten by zombies. You don't need to put so much pressure on yourself. Eat some of this, and you'll feel much better."
Rick took out the coffee candies he had redeemed from the system shop the night before and tossed them to Marvin.
Marvin took it and immediately put it in his mouth. His tense expression eased somewhat. He nodded to Rick, slung his gun over his shoulder, leaned on his iron bar, and limped out of the store.
Rick slung his backpack over his shoulder, grabbed his tactical crossbow, and went outside the store. The street was very quiet. A black van was parked in front of the store, with the Madison Outdoor Store logo printed on both sides.
The two then got into the car and drove to their destination.
No words were spoken along the way.
After arriving at the target neighborhood, Rick parked the car next to a nearby coffee shop.
Rick got out of the car, picked up the crossbow, and said to Marvin, "You wait in the car. I'll go ahead and scout ahead by myself. Don't fire unless absolutely necessary."
“Okay, be careful on your own. Contact me anytime via walkie-talkie if you have any problems,” Marvin replied from the passenger seat.
At the intersection not far away, an M1A2 Abrams tank was parked, with a few zombies wandering around it.
Looking at the zombies roaming around him, Rick was planning how to quickly complete Mission 3. First of all, Rick didn't intend to take any risks to complete the mission. According to the original plot, Grimes (the protagonist of The Walking Dead's full name is "Rick Grimes," but to avoid confusion between the protagonist of this article and the protagonist of The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes will be called Grimes) would arrive here on his horse. Then, dozens of zombies would suddenly appear from the street corner. After the zombies appeared, Grimes' horse would be startled and throw Grimes off and run away, but it wouldn't escape and would be devoured by another group of zombies. In his panic, Rick would lose his gun and satchel. Just as he was about to be caught by the zombies, Grimes ran to the middle of the intersection and climbed onto the Abrams tank, but was almost eaten by the soldiers who had turned into zombies inside the tank.
With this in mind, Rick had a bold plan. He knew that the inside of the tank was very safe, except for the soldier zombie. Zombies outside the tank couldn't climb up, and there was an M2HB.50 heavy machine gun on the roof. Although he didn't know if the machine gun had ammunition, he could recover the tank and the machine gun after completing mission 3. The .50 ammunition wouldn't be a problem.
Rick crouched down and slowly crept into a bookstore near the crossroads. Because it was a bookstore, it hadn't been visited by thugs; there were only traces of the fight left from when the apocalypse broke out.
Rick pushed open the door and went inside. Some of the bookshelves had been knocked over, and books were scattered everywhere. Rick carefully approached the stairs, holding his crossbow. Just then, he heard a "uh-uh-uh-ah" sound coming from up the stairs. Rick knew that this was the roar that only zombies could make. With the help of his advanced survival skills, Rick could sense that there was more than one zombie upstairs. Even so, if he wanted to better observe the situation at the crossroads, Rick had to go to the second floor of the bookstore.
Rick returned to the bookstore entrance. After confirming that there were no zombies outside, he moved a chair from the cashier's counter and used it to block the doorway. This was to prevent other zombies from hearing the noise while he was fighting the zombies upstairs and coming in through the main entrance to surround him.
After doing all this, Rick, carrying the crossbow, tiptoed upstairs. At the corner of the second floor, he saw a corpse lying motionless on the steps. Rick couldn't see the corpse's face and couldn't tell if it would stand up. To be safe, Rick slung the crossbow behind his back, drew his dagger, and slowly approached the corpse. With a soft thud, Rick plunged the military dagger into the corpse's head. He then pulled the dagger out; it was now stained with dark red blood—a color only seen in zombies.
Relieved he hadn't rushed up, Rick dragged the corpse of the zombie he'd just killed back down from the second-floor corner to the first floor, tossing it aside. He then picked up his crossbow again and returned to the second-floor corner. After confirming the second-floor stairwell was safe, Rick went up to the second floor.
The second floor of the bookstore is not large, with a total of 5 rooms: the manager's office, a restroom, a kitchen, a storage room, and a lounge.
The storage room was closest to the stairwell. Rick pressed his ear against the door, listening for any sounds coming from inside. After three minutes, confirming the zombies weren't in the storage room, Rick left and went to the kitchen diagonally opposite. There, he saw two zombies staring blankly at the wall with their heads drooping. After confirming there were no other zombies around the kitchen, Rick raised his crossbow, loaded a steel ball, aimed at the zombie on the left, and pulled the trigger. With a whoosh, the steel ball shot out, hitting the zombie's right eye directly, then passing through its head and smashing into a nearby cabinet.
The zombie collapsed to the side after being shot through the head by a steel ball. However, before it fell to the ground, its arm knocked the frying pan off the stove. The dull thud of the frying pan hitting the ground sounded like a firecracker exploding, and the sound of a zombie banging on the door of the manager's office came out instantly.
"Horrible!" Rick cursed, slung his crossbow over his shoulder, and ran quickly to the kitchen. He took out his military dagger from its sheath, gripped it in the back of his hand, and stabbed at the zombie's head. At that moment, the zombie noticed Rick, let out a roar, and walked towards Rick with its hands raised.
Rick rushed to the zombie, dodging to the side. The zombie's arms missed their target. Rick then raised his right foot and kicked the zombie in the side. Only the zombie knew the force of the kick. The zombie was kicked directly to the ground. Rick didn't let the opportunity pass. He ran over and stomped on the zombie's head. The kick crushed the zombie's fragile head. A large amount of dark red blood mixed with brain matter infected by the zombie virus stuck to Rick's shoe.
Upon witnessing this scene, Rick felt his stomach churning. Fortunately, Rick hadn't eaten breakfast that morning, otherwise he might have vomited up his bile.
After dealing with the zombie, Rick moved the dining table from the kitchen and used it to block the doorway to the manager's office. He then spent 1 point from the system shop to redeem a tactical machete (designed like an extended version of the Nepalese kukri). He then opened the door to the manager's office. As soon as the door opened, four zombies rushed towards Rick, but were blocked by the dining table. To prevent the table from becoming too overwhelming, Rick moved a dining chair to prop it up. Even so, the table was slightly loosened by the combined impact of the four zombies.
Wielding a tactical machete, Rick raised his hand and slashed at the nearest zombie. In an instant, the sharp blade severed half of the zombie's head, and blackish-red blood spurted out, staining everything around it. The zombie's blood splattered onto Rick, who, despite the discomfort, killed the other three zombies in the same way. The second floor was now filled with a stench. The corpses Rick had dealt with lay on the ground, their wounds oozing blackish-red blood, staining the surrounding environment blackish-red. Now, only Rick, wielding his tactical machete, remained on the second floor.
