midnight

Blood-red full moon

East entrance to Atlanta

Maggie had been standing there for three hours, but her father Herschel and Audis had not returned.

Beth got out of the car and said to Maggie, "Sister, do you think Audis and Dad have already...?"

Maggie interrupted Beth, saying, "Shut up, Beth! I won't allow you to say that. Dad and Audis will be fine! I believe in them!"

Beth: "But Dad and Audis have been gone for three hours and haven't come back yet."

Maggie: "Beth, I know, I understand, but I just don't want to believe that if Dad really had an accident, you would be the only person in the world who is closest to me."

Mieko overheard Maggie and Beth's conversation, got out of the car and said to Maggie, "Not only Beth, but also me, Maggie."

Beth: "That's right, Maggie, and Mihoko-neechan are here. The three of us must live well. That's what Dad thinks too. We can't let Dad down."

Mieko: "That's right, Maggie, cheer up! Mr. Herschel is just like Beth said. You two can't let him down. As long as I'm here, I'll protect you both."

Hearing what Mieko and Beth said, Maggie nodded to them and said, "Yes, thank you, Mieko and Beth."

Beth: "No need to thank me, we're family, we don't need to be so formal."

Mieko: "Although I am not a member of your Green family, I agree with what Beth said. A family should support each other so that they can survive in this post-apocalyptic world."

Maggie: "No, Mieko, Beth and I have always considered you family. Even though we've only known each other for a few hours, Beth and I have completely considered you family. We'll treat you like a sister, won't you agree, Beth?"

Beth: "That's right, Maggie and I both think so. Mieko, you don't need to feel guilty. I think Dad will support Maggie too."

Mieko hugged the two of them tightly, and said with a sob, "Thank you, Beth, Maggie. I, Mieko Nohara, will protect you both. You two are my family in this world!"

Maggie and Beth exchanged a glance, then hugged Mieko.

Suddenly, the roars of zombies came from all around. Dozens of scarlet eyes appeared in the jungle beside the road, staring at the three people in front of them. Amid the roars, some zombies that could trot were the first to run towards the three people.

Upon seeing the running zombies, Maggie exclaimed, "Oh no! Mieko! Beth! Get in the car!"

Upon seeing this, the two immediately ran into the four-door pickup truck. As soon as Maggie opened the driver's side door, a zombie that had been jogging rushed over and pounced on Maggie, pinning her to the steering wheel. Beth was so frightened by this scene that she screamed instantly, and her loud voice only excited the zombie that had pounced on Maggie even more.

Seeing this, Mihoko stabbed the zombie in the chest with the scabbard, knocking it aside. Maggie, free from the zombie's clutches, reacted quickly, kicking the zombie out of the driver's seat and under the door.

At this moment, more and more zombies were attacking the four-door pickup truck. Without hesitation, Maggie immediately closed the door, started the engine, and revved the engine, heading north.

ten minutes later

Drake and Herschel, driving their sports car, arrived at the entrance to the eastern outskirts of Atlanta. There, they saw a horde of dozens of zombies roaming the road, but they did not see the four-door pickup truck.

Upon seeing this, Herschel said anxiously, "Has Maggie already set off?"

Drake: "Don't worry, I know a road that leads to the North Side of Atlanta, but it's dangerous there because there are a lot of zombies."

Herschel: "No, I'm going too. My eldest and youngest daughters are in that car. They're probably heading north along the highway now. I can't leave them behind."

Drake: "Alright, I'll go with you, but I need to go back first to get my weapons."

Herschel: "Thank you, Mr. Drake."

Drake laughed and said, "We are both fathers. If it were Anna, I would have done the same. Besides, your little daughter is a fan of mine. Just for that reason, I can't just ignore her."

Herschel looked at Drake with gratitude and said, "If I can bring my daughter back, I will definitely ask Mr. Drake for a signed copy of her book."

Drake laughed and said, "Haha, Mr. Herschel, I promise you, I will definitely sign one for your daughter when she comes back."

And so, the two drove back in the direction they had come from.

1 hours later

Maggie drove Beth and Mihoko to the entrance of the North District of Atlanta, where a large number of zombies were heading out of the city.

Maggie and her two companions were stunned by what they saw, while Mieko remained calm. She said to Maggie, "Quick, turn off the engine, find something to cover the windows, and make sure the zombies don't see us."

Upon hearing this, Maggie and Beth retrieved the dust covers that had been previously placed on the four doors of the pickup truck. Maggie opened the sunroof, and the three of them leaned out. Before the zombies could see them, they quickly put the dust covers on the top of the pickup truck. However, due to the time constraints, the dust covers were not reinforced and were merely symbolically placed on the roof. Nevertheless, they barely covered the windows inside the truck, preventing the zombies outside from entering.

The three of them huddled in the car, trembling. The roars of zombies could be heard from outside. Since they had returned the Remington M870 to Herschel earlier, the three of them were now unarmed except for Mieko, who had a demon sword called the First Generation Kitetsu.

In this situation, Maggie regretted not driving in to find Herschel. They weren't exactly cornered, but they were close. Outside the four-door pickup truck was a horde of zombies moving north, and apart from Mieko, who had weapons, she and Beth were completely unarmed. Faced with this situation, only Mieko remained calm. This wasn't the first time she had experienced something like this. Seeing Mieko's calm and unflappable expression, Beth asked with a puzzled look, "Mieko-neeko, aren't you afraid?"

Maggie chimed in, "Yes, Mieko, aren't you scared?"

Mieko shook her head and said, "I'm scared. How could I not be scared at all in this situation? But there's no use being scared. I can only calm down and think of a solution."

Maggie nodded in agreement and asked, "Then, Mieko, do you have any good ideas?"

Mihoko thought for a moment and said, "Yes, but it's very risky, and we can't be discovered. Once discovered, the person who is found will be devoured by the zombies in an instant."

Beth: "Oh? Mieko-neechan, what's the method?"

Mieko: "What I'm about to say might make you both uncomfortable, so be prepared, especially you, Beth, I'm afraid you'll scream out loud."

Maggie: "Mieko, stop scaring Beth. Just tell me what it is."

Mieko: "It's about killing a zombie, then disemboweling the zombie, hanging the zombie's blood and organs on yourself, and then blending into the zombie horde by imitating its appearance."

Hearing this, Beth couldn't bear to listen anymore. She suddenly felt nauseous and even wanted to vomit up all the snacks she had eaten earlier.

Seeing Beth's state, Maggie stepped forward and said, "Beth! You have to hold back now! Otherwise, you'll attract zombies!"

Hearing Maggie's words, Beth forced herself to swallow the food churning in her stomach, despite her discomfort.

Seeing this, Maggie handed Beth a bottle of mineral water and said, "Drink some, it will make you feel better."

Beth took the bottle of mineral water, unscrewed the cap, took a big gulp, and then said, "Mieko-neechan, do you really have to do this? This is so disgusting."

Mihoko nodded and said, "Yes, we have to do it this way. Only in this way can we fool those zombies. Although those zombies are not very bright, they have a keen sense of smell. When they find that something is wrong with you, they will come up to you and observe you. At this time, the zombie blood and zombie organs on your body will deceive those zombies and become your last resort."

After listening to what Meiko said, Maggie and Beth found the method disgusting and unacceptable at the moment, but it was the only way to escape. Otherwise, if the zombie horde didn't leave, they would eventually be trapped and die in the car.

With that in mind, the three decided to take a good rest before starting their operation.

And the abandoned quarry camp is 10 kilometers away from Maggie's location.

Rick received an optional mission

[Ding! Detected that Maggie Green, one of the main female characters, and Beth Green are trapped on the entrance highway to the North Side of Atlanta. Host, do you wish to attempt a rescue?]

Rick: "System, system, is there a reward for the rescue?"

[Ding! Answer the host: There is a reward, and the host cannot refuse it.]

Rick: "System, system, what reward is so irresistible? Tell me!"

[Ding! Mission Reward: "Portable Space System Upgrade"]

Rick: "That's not enough, what else?"

[Ding! Advanced Quest Reward: "The host can freely enter and exit their personal space."]

Rick: "Oh? This is much more interesting. System, system, this allows free access to the personal space. Does that mean I can bring living things in with me in the future? Like horses, cattle, sheep, or even living people?"

[Ding! That's right, host. As long as you obtain the upgrade to the portable space system and the permission to freely enter and exit your portable space, you can put any living creature in your portable space, even a person.]

Rick: "What are we waiting for! Mark me right now, I'm coming to rescue you!"

[Ding! Mission navigation has been activated. Please follow the arrows to reach the target location.]

Having finished speaking

Rick, carrying a tactical crossbow, quietly crept up to the tree where Daryl was trapped. At that moment, dozens of zombies stood directly below Daryl, stretching out their tattered arms and reaching wildly towards the higher ground where Daryl was. Without hesitation, Rick immediately put a blue coffee candy in his mouth, then took out his tactical crossbow, loaded it, and pulled the trigger at the zombies in front of him.
