The Walking Dead: I Sell Arms as a Sixth-Rate Seller in the Apocalypse
Chapter 31 Crimson Full Moon: Danger in Atlanta's East District
夜晚
Blood-red full moon
5 kilometers south of Atlanta
Two pickup trucks were driving one after the other on the highway to Atlanta.
Mieko learned a lot from her casual conversations with the Maggie and Beth sisters along the way. Maggie and Beth also learned about everything that had happened in Macon City from Mieko. The three of them were all saddened by their own experiences when, just then, Audis, who was leading the way, stopped his car. Maggie also stopped her car and walked over to Audis, asking, "Audis, why did you stop? Did something happen up ahead?"
Audis pointed ahead.
Maggie looked in the direction Audis was pointing and saw a checkpoint ahead filled with zombies with bloodshot eyes.
These zombies were kept inside the city by the isolation fence, but another horde of zombies was also kept outside the city, and both groups of zombies were trying to destroy the isolation fence.
Looking at the scene before him, Herschel frowned. He knew that with their current strength, they were no match for these zombies.
At this point, Maggie knew that she couldn't force her way through with just her only Remington M870, especially since she didn't have many shotgun shells left.
Maggie said to Audis and Herschel with a serious expression, "We have to detour to the north. There are too many zombies here now, and we can't get through."
Upon hearing this, Herschel nodded and said to Audis, "Audis, let's listen to Maggie and take a detour. We have enough fuel and food to get around it."
The three reached an agreement and decided to enter the city from the east.
Maggie returned to her car, and this time she led the way.
Although they occasionally encountered a few zombies along the way, fortunately there weren't many obstacles on the road that would hinder Maggie and her group's progress.
quickly
Maggie then saw the entrance to the East Side of Atlanta.
Beth said to Maggie, "Sister, let's rest here for a while after Dad and Audis arrive."
After Beth finished speaking, she tore open a bag of Lay's potato chips and ate them with Mieko next to her.
Maggie looked around and then said to Beth, "I'll talk to Dad first. You two wait for me in the car."
Beth and Mieko nodded and continued eating their potato chips.
At this moment, Audis arrived at Maggie's location in his car. Since Maggie's car was better than Herschel's old two-door pickup truck, Audis and Herschel arrived a little later than Maggie and the others. This was to prevent Audis from not having time to turn back if Maggie and the others had an accident ahead.
When Audis saw Maggie waiting for him on the road, he drove up and asked, "Miss Maggie, what's wrong? Did something happen up ahead?"
Maggie replied, "No, Audis, on the contrary, it's eerily quiet ahead. There isn't a single zombie in sight, not even a zombie corpse or an abandoned car blocking the road."
After listening, Herschel fell into thought. He opened the car door, got out, and went to Maggie's four-door pickup truck. He looked at the clean road in front of him, which was almost as clean as it was before the apocalypse, and fell into deep thought.
Seeing this, Maggie said to Herschel, "Dad, I suspect there is danger ahead. Given the frenzy of the zombies tonight and the current post-apocalyptic environment, unless someone cleans this place every day, this road and entrance cannot possibly be so clean and tidy."
Upon hearing this, Herschel also stared at the road and entrance, lost in thought. Based on his years of experience, he deduced that a group of people were definitely entrenched here. As for what they were doing here, Herschel hadn't considered. He was a devout Christian, and when he was in danger, it was Mieko who stepped forward to save him. This gave Herschel a misconception, making him feel that humans in the apocalypse wouldn't attack each other as soon as they met. In addition, the blood-red full moon hanging in the night sky tonight had driven all the zombies into madness, leading him to mistakenly believe that in this environment, humans should unite and not fight amongst themselves.
With that in mind, Herschel told Maggie what he was thinking.
Maggie thought Herschel made sense, but Maggie wasn't a Christian, and unlike her father, she didn't believe that there were really people who would help strangers without expecting anything in return.
After thinking for a moment, Maggie said to Herschel, "Dad, I think we should be careful. Although we don't know why those people would do such a thing, we should always be vigilant and never let our guard down when it comes to strangers, in order to prevent any accidents."
Herschel said to Maggie, "Maggie, here's what we'll do: you stay nearby and watch. Audis and I will drive in and check first. If anything happens to us, you and Beth Mieko can just drive north and continue on our way, understand?"
Maggie: "No! Dad! I'm not letting you go on this adventure with Audis again this time. I have to join you!"
Snap! A crisp sound rang out in the night.
Herschel gave Maggie a big, loving smile.
Maggie was stunned by the blow. She stared at Herschel in disbelief. According to Maggie's memory, her older brother Arnold was often beaten by Herschel because he was more mischievous than Maggie. In addition, Arnold was good-for-nothing and hung out with thugs and motorcycle gangs. Once, he even sold a pregnant mare on Herschel's farm to buy a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The foal that the mare was carrying was obtained by Herschel in exchange for a week's worth of hay provided free of charge to a track and field racetrack in the neighboring city of Macon. Herschel took better care of that mare than any other horse on the farm. Herschel even planned to give the foal to Maggie because Maggie said one of her dreams was to become a horseman. That's why Herschel went to such lengths to give most of the farm's best hay to the track and field racetrack for Maggie's sake.
When Arnold secretly sold the mare and returned on his newly bought Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Herschel took his riding whip, asked Audis to bring a sack for Arnold to put on, and then picked up the whip and lashed the leather belt repeatedly until the sack was bright red and Arnold inside was motionless. Only then did Herschel stop.
Because of this, Annette, his biological mother, had a big fight with Herschel, then fell ill and died two months later.
Even so, Herschel had never hit Maggie in all her life, simply because he felt guilty towards her, and because of her current situation. Herschel felt he had let Annette and Maggie down. He had never laid a hand on Maggie in all her life, but today, he actually gave Maggie a loud slap. This immediately broke Maggie's defenses, and tears welled up in her eyes. She didn't understand why Herschel had hit her.
Thinking of this, Maggie asked, "Dad! Why! Why did you hit me? You've never hit me before, do you know how much this big bag you gave me hurt me emotionally?"
Herschel knew that the blow had been a bit too forceful, but he hadn't expected Maggie to react this way. He said to Maggie, "Maggie! I've never hit you in all your life because of my guilt towards your mother and because your brother Arnold shattered your dream of becoming a horse trainer. Seeing you so unhappy those past few days made me feel guilty, which is why I haven't hit you and want you to grow up happily and carefree. But that doesn't mean I'll let you take risks with me. You and Beth are both my precious children. If anything happens to either of you, I will be heartbroken. Especially what happened on the farm tonight made me realize something: you and Beth are the hope of the Green family, while I am just an old man in my seventies. For the continuation of the Green family, I must ensure your and Beth's safety, understand? Now stop being stubborn. As long as you are still my daughter, you will listen to me and wait for me obediently with Beth and Minako."
After listening, Maggie nodded blankly. She hadn't expected her father to still remember what happened back then. This made Maggie even more worried about Herschel and Audis going ahead to scout the way. She said to Herschel, "Dad, since that's the case, I have to prepare a contingency plan for you. If something really happens, I have to make sure you and Audis come back safely, otherwise I won't let you go."
Seeing that she couldn't persuade Maggie otherwise, Herschel had no choice but to agree. Then, Audis, Herschel, and Maggie discussed it and decided that Audis would drive in first, while Herschel would stand on the bed of the two-door pickup truck with a Remington M870 to keep watch. When there was no danger, Maggie would follow in the four-door pickup truck. If there was any danger, Audis would simply reverse back.
The action begins
Audis drove cautiously forward and soon arrived at the East Side of Atlanta. The streets were deserted, all the shops were closed, and apart from some looted shops filled with various damaged items, there was not a single car or corpse to be seen on the streets. It was like a ghost town.
Herschel looked at the scene before him, feeling puzzled, but he patted the roof of the car to signal Audis to continue forward. However, the deeper they went, the stronger Herschel's unease became. When Audis drove the car into a street corner, the accident happened.
The road ahead was completely blocked by a pile of green trash cans and a bus. Even the shops on both sides were boarded up. The environment here was like a pocket; once you entered, there was no way out except to return the way you came.
So far
Herschel said to Audis, "Audis, let's go, something's not right here."
Suddenly, Herschel heard a "click" behind him, and in an instant, he felt a dark gun barrel pressed against his head.
Just as Herschel was stunned by the gun barrel pressed against his head, he heard voices behind him.
