I thrived in the primitive tribe

Chapter 52 A Trip to the Saltwater Lake (2)

The next morning, dappled sunlight fell on her face, accompanied by the cheerful chirping of birds, and Lu Yao woke up. After a night's rest, she felt as if the morning breeze had swept away all her fatigue, replacing it with an unprecedented sense of ease and energy. Lu Yao secretly rejoiced; since arriving in this world of beastmen, her body had unknowingly become increasingly stronger.

The tribesman who went to investigate had already left. Looking at the sky, they also prepared to set off. They gently brushed away the embers with branches and covered them with damp soil to prevent any sparks from reigniting and causing a forest fire.

All traces were cleverly concealed, as if no one had ever been there, and the group continued their journey. The atmosphere among them wasn't as relaxed as yesterday; they were almost at the saltwater lake, and they wondered what the situation was like there.

Recalling Loya's account of the horrific wolf attack on the tribe, a shadow fell over everyone's hearts. They worried whether the ferocious wolves were still lurking near the saltwater lake. Filled with unease, they remained silent the entire way, broken only by the sound of footsteps and the occasional bird call. Each person silently prayed that, as they hoped, the wolves had indeed retreated from the saltwater lake.

As the group was nearing their destination, they encountered the tribesmen who had come to scout ahead of them. The man had a strange expression and a troubled look on his face, as if he had encountered something incomprehensible.

"So? What were the results of your investigation?" Everyone rushed over and asked eagerly.

“The wolf pack…the wolf pack is still there,” the man said with difficulty. “However, the situation is somewhat complicated.”

"complex?"

Everyone looked on with a head full of questions.

"They don't seem to want to claim the saltwater lake for themselves; they're just gathered together, and I don't know what they're doing?"

"How do you say this?"

"After further observation, I found that although the wolf pack was still lingering near the saltwater lake, they did not enclose the entire saltwater lake to declare it as their territory."

Instead, they simply congregated in this small area near the edge of the forest, behaving erratically.

Furthermore, I saw other animals licking the water from other parts of the saltwater lake, and the wolves didn't attack or drive them away at all. It was as if they completely ignored their presence, which was very strange.

"This is indeed very unreasonable."

"Could it be because they discovered something there? Like something very important to them, or something they're guarding?"

“I was thinking of getting closer to observe them, but as soon as I moved slightly toward them, the adult wolves guarding the outside started to look at me fiercely, ready to attack. So I didn’t dare to act rashly, worried that if I angered them, I would attract the wolves’ encirclement and attack.”

“You did the right thing. Let’s observe and see what’s going on,” Lu Yao said.

“You lead the way, and we’ll go take a look over there together,” Loya said.

The group cautiously approached the wolf pack, intending to assess the situation first. Since the wolves hadn't shown any intention of attacking other animals, perhaps they could detour from a relatively safe direction to the saltwater lake, thus avoiding conflict between the two sides.

As they drew closer, a tense and subtle atmosphere filled the air. Everyone became cautious, constantly watching their surroundings, fearing they might inadvertently become the target of the wolf pack.

Finally, they stopped at a safe distance from the wolves. This distance was just right, allowing them to observe the wolves without making them feel threatened and thus preventing the wolves from attacking.

“We can only go this far. If we go any further, the wolf pack will identify us as attackers and prepare to launch an attack.”

"Did you walk forward before?" Lu Yao asked, puzzled.

“Yes, that’s what I’m wondering about too. If someone were to intrude into the wolf pack’s territory, they should attack me regardless of whether I backed down or not. But after the wolves bared their teeth at me fiercely, I stepped back a little, and then they didn’t show any further aggression towards me. This is very puzzling to me.” The man was very confused.

The group was equally puzzled by the wolves' unusual behavior. They decided to hold back for the time being and observe the situation to see if they could find any clues to figure out what the wolves were doing. Hiding carefully under the dense foliage of the trees, they began to meticulously observe the wolves' every move, afraid of missing any detail.

“I think they’re gathered here to do something important,” one of the tribesmen said in a low voice, his eyes fixed on the wolf pack.

“You don’t need to tell me that,” a tribesman standing nearby retorted with an eye roll, “otherwise, why would they gather a pack of wolves to attack the tribe and fight for this saltwater lake?”

“That’s not what I meant,” the man explained hastily. “I meant that they must be doing something important somewhere near the saltwater lake. You see, although they’re gathered here, their eyes keep glancing towards the saltwater lake, as if they’re waiting for something.”

“I know that too,” another tribesman chimed in, “but it’s because we can’t see clearly from that distance.”

The group was discussing in hushed tones. Although their voices were kept very low, in the quiet forest, such noise should have been enough to attract the attention of the wolves not far away.

Surprisingly, the wolves seemed to completely ignore their presence, showing no signs of alertness or aggression.

They remained in their original postures, standing or lying down, their gaze occasionally sweeping over this side, but without lingering. It seemed that in their eyes, these cautious people were just an inconspicuous scene in the forest, and as long as they did not come any closer, they would not pose a threat, so they were not worth the effort to pay attention to.

This reaction surprised the group. After observing for a while, they found virtually no new clues, and the wolves' behavior was very puzzling.

After a brief exchange, they decided to turn back into the forest and go to the other side of the saltwater lake.

This decision required them to traverse denser forests, potentially facing more unknowns and dangers, but it was clearly a safer option than confronting the wolf pack directly.

The group quickly packed their gear and silently made their way into the depths of the forest along the winding path, filled with both curiosity about the unknown and vigilance against potential dangers.
