Chapter 35 Success of the Pottery Kiln

As the flames gradually weakened, the temperature inside the kiln slowly dropped to a relatively safe range. Lu Yao circled the kiln, took a deep breath to calm her excited emotions, and slowly walked towards the kiln.

She carefully opened the kiln door and poked her head inside, wanting to see what was going on.

The moment the kiln door opened, a wave of heat rushed out. The orc behind her immediately pulled Lu Yao aside and stood in front of her, startling her. Lu Yao frowned and said, "It's alright, I'll go in and take a look."

Seeing that nothing was happening, the man released his grip. Lu Yao lit a torch and probed it into the kiln to observe the condition of the kiln walls.

The once clean stone walls were now covered in a layer of gray, turning them black. I reached inside and felt that the temperature inside the kiln was within my comfort zone. I slowly walked in, taking each step with extreme caution and observing my surroundings.

"I can come in by myself, you all wait outside."

Lu Yao stopped the people behind her who were about to follow. She first went around the kiln wall to check the condition of the stones under her armpits to make sure they hadn't cracked. Then she went to the place where the pottery had been placed and carefully used the wooden stick in her other hand to pry away the ashes to find the pottery hidden inside.

After observing the firing process of each pottery piece and finding nothing amiss, Lu Yao took another look inside and discovered that the flue at the top was built a bit too high. She suggested that if it were to be built again next time, it could be lowered, and the overall height of the kiln could also be reduced.

The initial testing, based on all observed indications, has proceeded without issue. After several days of initial firing and heating, the kiln has demonstrated satisfactory results, proving its stability and durability meet the requirements for pottery production.

However, there are also drawbacks. Although the stone did not have any problems under high temperatures, its heat insulation is not very good. In other words, this pottery kiln can only be used when it is not raining. If it rains, it may cause changes in the stone and may cause it to crack.

Lu Yao slowly walked out of the pottery kiln, gently closed the kiln door, turned around, and looked at the tense-looking group of people with a serious expression.

"How did it go? Did it fail?" the high shaman asked anxiously.

"The walls of the inner cellar were burned?"

"The pottery was damaged during firing?"

……

"Say something already, I'm so anxious..."

Lu Yao's face lit up with surprise and excitement as she loudly announced, "We did it!"

The sound was like a thunderclap, instantly silencing the people who had been anxiously asking questions. About 10 seconds later, cheers resounded throughout the entire tribe, and everyone in the tribe slowly gathered around, drawn by the sound.

"What happened?"

"What happened?"

……

Looking at the buildings in front of them, everyone seemed to understand.

"The pottery kiln is a success!" A cheer erupted from the crowd. Their faces were filled with joy and excitement. The leader, who had arrived late, felt the enthusiastic atmosphere and was genuinely happy.

"Quiet down, everyone, Lu Yao has something to say," someone shouted.

The crowd gradually stopped cheering and stood quietly in place, waiting for Lu Yao to speak.

"Everyone, we have tested the kiln and there are no problems. We can start making pottery and firing it tomorrow."

"Wow, does everyone have to be able to make pottery?"

“I want a clay pot,”

"I want one too,"

“I want a pottery piece that’s bigger than a clay pot,”

……

“But,” Lu Yao interrupted everyone’s daydreaming.

Upon hearing Lu Yao's "but," everyone fell silent.

"Due to the limited availability of building materials, pottery kilns can only be used on non-rainy days; they cannot be used when it snows or rains."

"why?"

"Because we built our kilns with stone, and stone... expands when heated... so if it rains... do you understand?"

Seeing everyone's confused expressions, Lu Yao was about to repeat herself when the leader spoke.

Do you understand?

No~

"That's good then. Why do you care why? Just know that the pottery kiln can only be used on sunny days. If it's raining, snowing, or the weather is bad, don't use it. Understand?"

"Understood!" everyone shouted in unison.

"Lu Yao, the pottery kiln is built. So, when it comes to making pottery, will you do it yourself, or will you lead everyone to do it, or something else?"

"Chief, where did you find that soil you brought back last time? Is it far from us?"

"Which one? It's not far. I'll have Osei take you to find it tomorrow."

"Sure, my idea is that anyone who wants to learn pottery can come and learn from me. After they learn, they can compete with each other, and then the best ones will be selected to form our tribe's pottery team, specifically responsible for the tribe's pottery production. What do you think?"

The leader pondered for a moment, then said, "Okay."

“Our tribe currently has a weaving team, a hunting team, a patrol team, and now we're adding a pottery team and a food preparation team, making a total of 5 teams. Later, we should also have a breeding team, a planting team, and so on. Our tribe only has about 50 people in total, which doesn't seem like enough.”

"That's true, so one person can learn multiple skills and join multiple teams, and then stagger their work time."

"This will have to be done for now."

"So you're Lu Yao, the captain of the pottery team?"

"I'll temporarily take over this role. Once they've learned it, we'll choose the most suitable one to do it."

“Alright. Anyone who wants to learn pottery from Lu Yao tomorrow, please step forward.”

One by one, several people came out. After counting the number of people, everyone discussed when to go out to find muddy ground the next day, and then dispersed to do their own things. Lu Yao and the others could finally relax, go back to tidy themselves up, and then go have dinner later.
