I thrived in the primitive tribe

Chapter 34 The Construction of the Pottery Kiln

Lu Yao slowly woke up in the morning, opening her blurry eyes. She was the only one left in the cave, so it seemed she had gotten up unusually late today.

Lu Yao sat up abruptly, unconsciously rubbing her sleepy eyes, trying to wake herself up faster. She silently calculated the time in her mind.

She quickly washed up, picked up the breakfast the witch had left for her, and ate as she walked toward the place where the beef was being marinated.

Upon arriving quickly, Lu Yao saw Arthur standing beside her. It seemed he had arrived quite early and had been waiting there for quite some time.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I overslept today." Lu Yao apologized hurriedly and sincerely as she quickly walked through the crowd. Her hair was ruffled by the breeze, and her face was covered in sweat from running. A few strands of hair stuck to her forehead, and she was holding a half-eaten pancake in her hand, making her look a little disheveled.

"No rush, take your time," Arthur said gently, her voice full of understanding and a hint of a smile. Her voice was like a warm spring breeze, gently soothing Lu Yao's anxious heart and calming her down considerably.

Upon hearing this, Lu Yao slowed her pace, a sheepish smile appearing on her face. Her eyes were filled with apology, as if to say, "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry..."

Seeing this, Arthur's lips curled up slightly, revealing a charming smile. "It's alright, you were so tired yesterday, it's normal to get up late."

Lu Yao ran her hand through her hair and scratched her head sheepishly. "Next time, just go to the Great Witch's cave and call me. Don't wait here by yourself."

The two opened the containers used to marinate the beef yesterday, examining each piece inside. Each piece seemed to have acquired a unique flavor over time. Lu Yao approached the beef, slowly developing its delicious aroma, gently picked up a piece, and brought it close to her nose to sniff. Unlike marinated products with added seasonings, this only had the pure aroma of meat, with a hint of fresh grass and a touch of sweetness—more rustic and pure.

Next, she carefully observed the color of the beef. The surface had a natural, healthy bright red color, and under the sunlight, the texture of the beef was clearly visible, with the meat fibers revealing a slight sheen, like a work of art. It made one marvel at how well naturally grown cattle, fed without additives or feed, could be.

"Alright, now we just need to put these beef and animal meats on the racks we set up last night to dry."

You can use rattan to string the beef together and hang it on a rack, or you can simply drape the beef over a rack—whichever is more convenient for you.

Make sure to maintain good ventilation and leave enough space between the pieces of meat to help the moisture in the beef evaporate. Avoid direct sunlight and turn the beef occasionally.

"Okay, Lu Yao, I understand. Leave the rest to me. Are you going to continue building the pottery kiln today?"

"Yes, I've been staying at the pottery kiln since then. If you need anything or have any questions, just come to the pottery kiln and find me."

After speaking, Lu Yao started walking towards the pottery kiln. As she got closer, she could vaguely see the busy figures working at the kiln.

She quickened her pace, and the sight before her moved her deeply. Yesterday it was only half-built, but today it was almost finished.

The ventilation openings on the kiln wall were also made quite well; even if I came here myself, I wouldn't be confident that they were made better.

The tribespeople are busy building the flue at the top, a crucial part of venting smoke during the firing of the pottery kiln. Lu Yao feels incredibly proud; these are the tribespeople I chose—hardworking, intelligent, and capable.

Lu Yao straightened her somewhat disheveled and sweat-dampened hair, tied it into a simple ponytail with a rattan, and then enthusiastically joined everyone in the construction of the pottery kiln.

The sunlight slanted across everyone's resolute faces, reflecting their focused and determined expressions.

With Lu Yao's addition, the speed increased. Everyone had a clear division of labor and performed their duties. The orcs were responsible for accurately stacking the heavy stones to form a solid wall, while the pottery shaman and the other shaman poured grass mixed with mud into the gaps to fill them.

Time passed quietly, the sun gradually sank in the west, and a magnificent sunset appeared on the horizon, the fiery red color seemingly celebrating the completion of the pottery kiln site.

When the last stone was placed on the kiln, everyone cheered in unison. The pottery kiln, which embodied everyone's expectations, was completed a full day ahead of schedule.

Looking at the not-so-large pottery kiln in front of them, the group was filled with joy. Lu Yao knew that this pottery kiln was not just a place for firing pottery, but also a symbol of their entry into the pottery age and a testament to their tribal culture and wisdom.

At this moment, Lu Yao became even more determined to contribute all her strength to the prosperity and development of her tribe. She believed that with everyone's joint efforts, their tribe would definitely become better and stronger.

After inspecting the inside and outside of the pottery kiln to ensure that everything was securely connected, the kiln door was functioning properly, and the ventilation openings and flues were unobstructed, Lu Yao prepared to light the kiln for a test to see if it could be used normally.

They put dry firewood into the kiln, ensuring the fuel was evenly distributed so that it could provide a stable heat during the firing process.

To test the performance of the kiln and ensure the validity of the data from the upcoming pottery firing, Lu Yao quickly and easily made several simulated pottery pieces using the clay she had on hand. Although these pottery pieces were just hastily made and had little practical use, they were still perfectly adequate as test pieces to assess the firing results.

Once everything was ready, they lit the fuel inside the kiln. The flames spread rapidly, burning fiercely, and the surrounding air quickly became scorching hot. Lu Yao and the others quickly retreated, moving away from the kiln, in case it cracked due to a rapid rise in temperature or unstable construction during its first use, causing injury to everyone.

As the fire gradually stabilized, smoke began to slowly drift out from the chimney at the top of the kiln, rising gently and weaving a unique scene with the blue sky and white clouds.

The ventilation openings on the side of the kiln are also functioning normally, ensuring that the flames inside burn steadily.

The group stared at the pottery kiln with a mixture of tension and excitement, occasionally peering through the ventilation openings to observe the conditions inside. Since there was no thermometer, Lu Yao could only circle the kiln constantly, sensing the temperature changes and checking if the temperature was evenly distributed around it.

As time went on, the temperature inside the pottery kiln reached its peak. Although two layers of stones were used as the kiln walls, it was still scorching hot to stand inside.
