I thrived in the primitive tribe
Chapter 27 Making Food
When Lu Yao returned to the tribe, she ran into the chief and others who had just returned from the hunt. They all went to the square to cook.
"Ose, what are you carrying on your back?" someone asked, getting close to Ose and looking at the plants in the wicker basket on his back.
“Bamboo shoots,” Ose replied briefly.
"Is it for eating? Is it tasty? How do you make it?"
"I don't know..." Osei replied coldly.
Seeing that Osei's expression wasn't good, the man returned dejectedly to his companion.
"Tch, can't even ask him? Who does he think he is, giving him that cold look like someone owes him something..."
"He's always been like this. Why do you go and provoke him? Don't you think you've been scolded enough already?" his companion retorted.
The man muttered a few more words in a low voice, but the people around him ignored him.
After arriving at the square, Lu Yao and the others put down their wicker baskets and began taking things out. Everyone looked at the unfamiliar food and wondered what the divine messenger was planning.
"Lu Yao, are all of these things you brought back edible?"
"There are some of them that I've tried that weren't good; the taste was really indescribable."
Listening to everyone's comments, Lu Yao didn't explain, but simply said...
"Just you wait and see, don't fight over it after it's done."
"No, we were wrong." Everyone joked and laughed.
"Looks like we're in for a treat today..."
Lu Yao gave a haughty snort. She didn't realize that after transmigrating to the Beastman Continent, she had become more and more indulgent and had lost her previous restraint.
Lu Yao discussed the dinner menu with the clansman in charge of preparing dinner that day.
Scallion pancakes, roasted meat, stewed meat, stir-fried bamboo shoots, stewed bamboo shoots, stir-fried potatoes, etc.
Roasting and stewing meat are skills the tribespeople had already learned, and those who received the tasks have already started working.
"What are we going to do?" someone asked Lu Yao.
"I'll teach you how to cook the leftovers."
Lu Yao assigned the remaining people to process the gaga fruit, bamboo shoots, and potatoes. After explaining how to peel them and how to cut them, she prepared to make scallion pancakes.
"Add hot water to the prepared gaga fruit powder, stir it into a flocculent state, then add an appropriate amount of cold water, knead it into a smooth dough, and let it rest for a while. This is called resting the dough."
Next, wash the scallions thoroughly, chop them finely, and set them aside.
As Lu Yao made the product, she explained it to the tribespeople next to her.
"Next is to make the pancakes. Divide the rested dough into several small portions, and roll each portion into a thin sheet with a wooden stick."
Sprinkle a small amount of salt on the thin slices, brush on a layer of oil, and sprinkle chopped green onions evenly on top;
Starting from one end, roll the thin sheet into a long strip, like this;
Then, starting from one end of the strip, roll it inwards until it looks like this;
Finally, press the rolled dough firmly with your hands, and then roll it out into a thin pancake shape with a wooden stick;
The rest is the same as making pancakes.
So, have you all gotten it? Now, try it yourselves.
Seeing that the group had no problems making the pancakes, Lu Yao handed the task of making scallion pancakes over to them, since the bamboo shoots and potatoes were almost ready.
Lu Yao put the chopped pork belly, blanched bamboo shoots, and wild scallions into the earthenware pot and stewed them together. Once the meat was tender, the simplified version of Yan Du Xian was ready to be served.
Next, let's make shiitake mushrooms and bamboo shoots.
The shiitake mushrooms are sliced. These shiitake mushrooms were picked in the forest before. Although they were not freshly picked, the original wild shiitake mushrooms taste much better than artificially cultivated ones.
"I wonder if they have chicken here. Chicken stew with mushrooms is really delicious." Lu Yao thought to herself as she kept working with her hands.
After preparing the ingredients, Lu Yao began to cook.
"Sauté scallions in oil, add blanched bamboo shoot pieces, stir-fry with shiitake mushrooms, add the water used to soak the shiitake mushrooms and simmer for a while, add an appropriate amount of salt, and finally add some greens and stir-fry until the greens are cooked."
The onlookers nodded to indicate that they understood.
Next came stir-fried bamboo shoots with meat, stewed potatoes with bones, stir-fried shredded potatoes, and so on. Soon, the aroma filled the tribe, and the tribespeople who stayed behind to weave rattan clothing gathered around, drawn by the fragrance.
"The food looks so good today! What smells so delicious? My mouth is watering..."
Everyone joined in, making slurping sounds as they sucked in their saliva, which made everyone burst into laughter.
Lu Yao made braised bamboo shoots with the remaining bamboo shoots. After using up almost all the ingredients she had collected, dinner was ready.
The food was incredibly delicious and mouthwatering. After the leader announced that it was time to eat, everyone scrambled to grab it, as if every bite was a rare delicacy. Everyone was afraid that if they were even a little slow, they would miss out on this feast for the senses.
Watching the crowd whose arms were practically blurring out afterimages, Lu Yao gazed at their enthusiastic response to the food, her face beaming with satisfaction and pride.
Seeing that every dish was quickly devoured, and everyone eagerly tasted and praised it, she felt a great sense of accomplishment and joy.
This feeling of being recognized and loved is more real and sweeter than any praise.
This made her realize that food cooked with care can convey happiness and connect people's hearts.
After finishing their meal, everyone was still enjoying themselves and someone asked a question.
"I never expected that round fruit to taste so good when cooked, but why is it called a potato?"
"Because we dug it out of the ground, and it's so round, I thought of the name 'potato,' which I think is quite catchy. Or if you have a better name, you can choose one."
"No need, just call it Potato, it's easy to remember..."
What do you think of its taste?
"I like potatoes that are stewed until very soft."
"I like the crunchy part."
"They're all delicious, I like them all."
……
"I want to try growing it myself. If I can succeed, we'll have another food source, giving us extra protection during the cold season."
Listening to Lu Yao's words, everyone thought it was a good idea and unanimously approved the proposal.
The high priest had just returned from his conversation with the chief when he heard everyone's enthusiasm for planting potatoes, so he went over to them.
