Chapter 6 Fate Takes a Turn
The Ainu people live in Hokkaido, a small area, and they know everything about their native land. Therefore, it's not surprising that the high priest guessed the evil god came from the west, nor is it because his divination was particularly miraculous. (Materialism! Nonsense! The high priest was truly a man of great wisdom!)
Ashitaka...
Ashitaka felt a jolt when he heard the high priest call his name, but he quickly calmed down.
"The High Priest!"
"Let everyone see your right hand!!"
Upon hearing this, Ashitaka immediately unwrapped his arm, revealing the cursed scars underneath. Although they resembled burns, the strange patterns and evil aura sent chills down the spines of those around him.
Liu Yufei naturally already knew this. Looking at Ashitaka's wounds, he thought to himself, "Brother, you can switch to the Ghost Swordsman class now."
"Ashitaka, you'd better prepare to face your fate, shouldn't you?"
This isn't a question! It's tantamount to saying you have to accept it whether you like it or not. Ashitaka's courage is truly admirable, and he immediately retorted:
"Yes, from the moment I shot the arrow at the evil god, I knew my fate!"
"Yes!! The day the curse on your scar seeps into your very bones will be the day you perish!!"
The sorceress was pleased to hear that Ashitaka understood her words, but she had no choice but to tell him the consequences.
It would be a lie to say Ashitaka wasn't upset. Anyone who went through that ordeal wouldn't be as calm as Ashitaka. That's why he's the protagonist.
In this respect, Liu Yufei is far inferior. True strong people are those who dare to face their own destiny, even if the future is uncertain.
But Liu Yufei still felt disdain, not at Ashitaka, but at the villagers.
He now finally understood why these people were expelled: because they were utterly weak.
In truth, whether it is a god or an evil god, it is a powerful force and also a calamity. These people do not have the courage to face the disaster, which means they do not have the courage to face the strong. The next time a powerful enemy attacks, it will be the day the village is destroyed.
Because this is the way of nature, and nature is unreasonable.
There are no heroes in the world, or rather, everyone who dares to step forward is a hero. That's why we should treat soldiers well, because they really go for it when there's trouble!
The nation is their strong backing, and that backing lies in never forgetting everyone who serves the people. As long as they have this spirit, every soldier can be worth five.
Unfortunately, not everyone can understand this. Everyone knows about the infamous 911 incident in the United States, right? When the fire was being fought, the president personally signed the order, and the firefighters were all vying to be the first to go.
Many were injured, and afterwards, they failed to keep their promises. They even criticized and drove away the warriors. From then on, the five of them were no match for one person!
Of course, there are difficulties; who doesn't have difficulties? Ashitaka chose to accept it precisely because he understood, which is why he is admirable.
"High Priest, is there really no other way?"
The one who spoke up was the grandfather who had been on guard duty earlier; he didn't want to see Ashitaka suffer such pain alone.
“Yes! Ashitaka did this to protect the village, we can’t just watch him die.”
"Fate is something no one can change!!"
The high priest immediately spoke up to stop them, saying that although these people were genuinely expressing their feelings, apart from the old man from before, they all seemed to be playing good cop/bad cop.
As for the fate mentioned by the high priest, it is even more absurd. Only those who do not try to change their fate believe that fate cannot be changed, so these people drift along with the tide and bring their people to this remote borderland to eke out a living.
Of course, their choice was not wrong, because there is no right or wrong in choices, and the choice itself is related to the determination of fate.
"Rather than waiting to die in the village, it's better to actively seek a solution!"
The discussion wasn't intense, because it had already been discussed during the day; otherwise, only a few people would have come, since it concerned the fate of the entire village.
As he spoke, the high priest slowly pulled a pellet from his robes.
"This was left behind by the Wild Boar God. If it hadn't been shattered to pieces and suffered extreme pain and torment, the Wild Boar God wouldn't have transformed into an evil god!!"
That was all the high priest could say, but Liu Yufei knew that what transformed him into an evil god was not physical pain, but resentment from the bottom of his heart.
What we hate is not the tiny bullet itself, but the irreconcilable conflict between human industry and nature.
But at least it gave Ashitaka a clue, and Ashitaka looked at the bullet in the distance with a complicated expression.
"Ashitaka, a terrible disaster has surely occurred in the West. When you get there, use your sharp eyes to see what has happened. Doing so may break the curse on you."
The high priest's words summed up the theme: "With bright eyes, clear eyes, eyes without shadows."
Ultimately, it is Ashitaka's eyes that matter—a balanced, objective eye.
Nature is balanced; it does not discriminate against any particular species, so nature's perspective is objective.
Throughout the entire series, only the eyes of the Kirin God have this kind of gaze. Even Ashitaka has human thoughts; although he transcends humanity, he has not awakened divinity.
But the Qilin God's eyes, calm and still as a well, truly exuded divinity—not aloof and superior, but unattainable, a kind of ethereal divinity! (I'm at a loss for words; explaining this would be too troublesome!)
The war between humans, the war between humans and nature, in the eyes of the Qilin God is like watching ants fight, but that's not entirely accurate, because we are also from a human perspective, a superior one, while the Qilin God's realm is clearly higher!
Ultimately, divine authority was interpreted by mortals, and the result of the judgment was expulsion.
The oldest elder immediately spoke up:
“We have been living in seclusion here for over five hundred years since we were defeated by the Yamato people. Now the Yamato people are declining and unable to expand outwards. However, after a hundred years, there is still no hope of our clan’s revival! Ashitaka, as the future clan leader, it is your duty to represent our people and go to the west to rule the world.”
Liu Yufei's eyes lit up immediately. He looked at the old man across from him. He hadn't expected there to be such a master. "So you're the clan leader?" he said. "That's a compliment that leaves no reason for anyone to refuse!"
This is truly a case of having little power but boasting big words. Although Liu Yufei looked down on the Warring States period, he knew that they were willing to risk their lives to start wars, big and small.
These idiots are getting more and more ridiculous as they get older, yet they dare to boast that they can rule the world. Why don't you just let Ashitaka go to Kyoto by himself?
"Pfft!! Sorry, you guys continue, I'm feeling a little unwell!!"
It's not that Liu Yufei is disrespectful, he just couldn't help himself. A village chief thinking about establishing his own dynasty—most people don't have that kind of imagination.
