Chapter 26 Robert Returns South and Purges the Lannisters
Robb led the troops from the three territories to sweep through the remaining cities in the Westerlands. After dealing with the remaining Lannister forces in the Westerlands, Robb arranged for a group of people to be left in the North and the Riverlands to guard the Westerlands for me. He planned to come back and slowly reorganize the Westerlands after the matters in the North were settled.
Robb escorted Jaime Lannister and the remaining Lannister soldiers northward, intending to send these infighting egotisticals to the Wall and show them what their North was doing for Westeros!
Upon receiving the news, King Robert and Lord Stark were pleased with Robb's swift victory. King Robert immediately ordered Robb to wait at Carin Bay for the king to march south. He wanted to meet the surrendered kingslayer and then lead a portion of the Stark army from the North to march south again to King's Landing and reclaim his kingdom.
Robert eventually agreed to my request to contact Daenerys. He also had Maester Luwin write a letter and send it to White Harbor. When the White Harbor fleet went to Essos for trade, he sent a messenger to search for Daenerys and Jorah Mormont, to inform them of the situation in Westeros, and let Daenerys decide for herself whether or not to bring the dragons back to help.
I also wrote a letter to the messenger, telling him that Daenerys should be in Qarth or have already sailed to Astapor to buy the Unsullied. I should be able to find traces of Daenerys and Jorah Mormont in these two places. After finding them, I told Daenerys that there was a swordsman named Bai Ze who traveled the continent in the North who had a way to help her raise her dragons safely. Then I gave her the letter.
…
Three days later, King Robert and Ned, who had traveled south, successfully reunited with Rob's forces at Carin Bay. Robert received all the lords and nobles who had participated in the battle and told them that he would hold a tournament to confer titles upon his return to King's Landing. At that time, there would be rewards for those who had persisted in supporting King Robert to reclaim the throne. Of course, these rewards were all arranged by Bai Ze, Ned, and Robert. Bai Ze provided rare weapons and equipment, as well as a rare purple armor set, which were the most coveted items for knights, nobles, and lords.
In the camp where the prisoners were being held, Robert summoned the surrendered Jaime Lannister, "Damn beast, was that your idea or that bitch Cersei's idea!"
Robert knew there was something wrong with the time he was injured; Lancel Lannister had laced the wine he drank on the hunt, otherwise he wouldn't have been so disoriented and gotten hit by the charging boar.
James looked at Robert and shook his head, saying, "That was her revenge for all those years of neglecting her. I only found out about this after you faked your death and were burned."
"And what about Joffrey's children?" Robert continued to ask.
Jaime smiled helplessly, lowering his head and not daring to look at Robert. "That was a mistake she and I made. I hope Your Majesty will spare them, considering that the Lannisters helped you rule the Seven Kingdoms and that I killed the pyromancer and saved King's Landing. I will go to the Wall and become the Man in Black, leading the remaining Lannisters to atone for their sins!"
Robert looked at Jaime Lannister kneeling before him, kicked him to the ground, and said angrily:
"The Lannisters have no chance to negotiate with me!"
As they spoke, news from outside King's Landing was swiftly relayed to the camp. Robert, upon reading the report from King's Landing, burst into laughter:
"Well, another mad queen has appeared in the great Seven Kingdoms! She burned over 50,000 troops from the Stormlands and the Reach with wildfire, Renly was severely burned on half his body, and Margaery Tyrell, the little rose of Highgarden, was almost scared out of her wits by the wildfire explosion! Well, well, well! Hahahaha... Hahahaha!"
Everyone present was stunned by Cersei's audacious actions. She had accomplished what the Mad King had once wanted, wiping out such a large army in one fell swoop. Robert, looking at Jaime, who was still reeling from Cersei's performance, said:
"See? This is the stupid thing your great Queen Cersei did. Do you know why I despise her? She's an incomprehensible madwoman!"
Robert gripped the letter tightly in his hand and looked at Jaime Lannister, saying:
"You've got your terms. You'll go to the Wall of Despair, and I'll spare her life!"
He turned to the accompanying maester and said, "Go and write to King's Landing now, and tell her to get out of King's Landing right now with her bastard child. Whether by boat or horse, tell her to get out quickly!"
I don't want to see her when I return to King's Landing!
"I don't want to see a single Lannister in King's Landing. If she's still there when I return, I'll slaughter every Lannister in the world!"
Bai Ze and Ned watched Robert's fury from the sidelines; the feeling of wanting to strike but being unable to did so fueled his rage.
"Go and write to Stannis, tell him to take the fleet to Blackwater Bay and watch that bastard leave King's Landing. Have all the wildfires in the city found, and at a safe time, dump them all into the sea," Robert then instructed the maester.
“Rob, you take your men and escort the Lannisters to the North. Your father and I are continuing south. Leave us 5000 men in case that madman does anything foolish again.”
"Once the men are delivered, tell the Wall that once everything in the south is settled, my King, the Protector of the Seven Kingdoms, will go to the Wall. I want to see just how despicable these White Walkers who bring darkness are, and let us kill them all!" Robert told Rob Stark.
“As you command, Your Majesty!” Robb bowed in response to King Robert’s order and, with a few guards, escorted Jaime Lannister out of the room.
"Now let's count who the Lannister remnants are. I will make sure the name of Lannister disappears completely after I arrive in King's Landing!" Robert was really serious this time, and he issued a verdict against all the Lannister families in the Westerlands.
"There are not many people left. Apart from those captured by Rob, all the territories and castles in the entire western region have been cleared out, and all the property has been packed and crated outside."
Apart from those who died at the Battle of the Red Fork, members of the Marbran, Creyh, Westerling, Clegane, and Brax families remained, along with those who followed Cersei in King's Landing.
Ned has finished compiling the list Rob sent; now, apart from farmers and some servants, all the nobles in the entire Westerlands have been purged.
"Oh, right! Someone!" Robert suddenly remembered something and called out to the knight standing guard at the door, "Your Majesty!" The knight at the door responded and entered the room to await orders.
"Catch the messenger who brought the message to King's Landing! I only want one head! When I stand at the gates of King's Landing, I want to see Lancel Lannister's head!"
"As you command, Your Majesty!"
After speaking, the knight turned to find his horse and chased after the messenger who had delivered the message.
"Alright, everything's fine now. Divide the spoils from the Western Territory into three parts: one part to reward the army that marched south, and the other part to Brother Bai Ze as payment for saving me and aiding the Northern Territory."
"Of course, the western territories are also yours. When we return to King's Landing for the tournament and investiture ceremony, I will personally bestow a title upon you, and from then on, the western territories will be yours!" Robert was never stingy in this regard; he would spend money whenever necessary.
"Thank you, Your Majesty! I happen to have some things here that you urgently need. We can share them after we arrive in King's Landing. I also have a way to treat Renly's injuries. The medicine I gave you before can heal him, although there may be scars on the burns."
"Oh, by the way, I heard that Lord Stannis's daughter has greyscale. I think I have something here that could restore her to normal. Perhaps Lord Stannis could bring his daughter over to try it? If it doesn't work, there are no side effects. If it does cure her, then of course, everyone will be very happy!"
Bai Ze looked at King Robert, whose waist had thickened again, and smiled mysteriously.
Robert and Ned both knew how amazing Bai Ze's things were. Whether it was weapons, equipment, or potions, they all made them think that Bai Ze was not only a master swordsman, but also a mysterious apothecary and alchemist! Now, he could not only heal injuries, but also cure the incurable Greyscale disease. It was simply too outrageous!
…
Robert's letter reached Cersei, who looked at the message telling her to get lost and looked at the Red Keep, the vast and majestic King's Landing, and thought of the wealthy Lannisters in her own Westerlands!
All of this used to be hers, but she ruined it all. Now she has nothing left. The Lannister family is practically extinct. The remaining family members and vassals have been sent to the Wall, and Jaime has been taken there as well. She feels so empty and sad now.
Clutching the letter, she glanced around resentfully, then summoned the Mountain and ordered him to dispose of Lancel and send his head to the city gate—a gift for her husband, Robert.
Just as Cersei was arranging for her people to pack up and prepare to leave King's Landing, the guards on the city reported that Stannis Baratheon's fleet had arrived at Blackwater Bay and sent messengers to say that anyone who knew the location of the wildfire within the city should stay and assist them in dealing with the wildfire, or the Lannisters would not be allowed to leave!
Cersei reluctantly sent her maesters and alchemists with Stannis's men to deal with the wildfire, while she watched her own men pack their belongings.
That afternoon, the maester and alchemist, who had returned after extinguishing the wildfire, said that Stannis had cleared the way and they could leave.
Sitting in her queen's carriage, Cersei watched King's Landing recede into the distance, two streams of tears sliding down her cheeks. Hearing Joffrey's hysterical roars and curses from the carriage next to hers, Cersei felt, for the first time, a deep loathing for her son. Looking at the Mountain, who rode guarding her window, she said to him:
“Go tell your brother, the Hound, to shut Joffrey up. He’s nothing now. Stop acting like a king and going crazy. If he keeps going crazy, hand him over to his ‘father,’ King Robert!”
The Mountain slowed down on horseback to relay a message to the carriage behind. A moment later, a crisp slap rang out, and Joffrey's hysterical voice disappeared.
Cersei felt a sense of relief. She decided to head south to Dorne, and if they weren't welcome there either, she planned to lead the last of her people across the strait to Essos, where at least she wouldn't be reminded of this painful place.
