Chapter 12 Tavern Talk: Ned Stark's Preparations
Disheartened and disillusioned in Winterfell, Jon Snow desperately needed a place where people weren't judged by their status and could try a different way of life. He earnestly urged Benjen Stark to take him with him when he left. Benjen, having no other choice, finally said:
"Alright, think it over carefully. If you still insist on going when I leave, I will ask your father for you."
He then patted Jon Snow on the shoulder and left.
Benjen returned to inform Ned Stark about the White Walkers the ravens had mentioned earlier at Winterfell. Although no living White Walkers had been found, the wildlings outside the Wall had indeed been active, with some fleeing south, indicating that something was wrong in the Land of Everwinter.
Bunyan's visit provided Ned with a convenient excuse to escape the banquet hall; Robert was such a heavy drinker that Ned couldn't keep up.
"Benyan, thank you for coming~" Ned gave Benyan a hug.
"Don't mention it, Ned. I have something to discuss with you." The two then went to Ned's office.
“Tell me, Benjen, what’s the situation at the Great Wall?” Ned asked anxiously.
“There is indeed a problem outside the Great Wall. Recently, more and more savages have been trying to escape south and cross the Great Wall on their own. Moreover, the animals are also restless. Perhaps there is something in the Land of Eternal Winter that is frightening them,” Ban Yang said seriously.
Ned's heart sank, but he also felt a weight lifted from his shoulders. "Bai Ze was right. The White Walkers might really be awakening. It seems winter is coming."
Benjen was also a little sad. Although things weren't going well at the Wall, Westeros had only enjoyed a decade or so of good times. Was war about to break out again?
"It seems we need to talk to Brother Bai Ze. Ban Yang, take Bai Ze with you when you go back this time. He has a lot of weapons and equipment, as well as Molotov cocktails that can be used to start fires. These are all things you urgently need!"
"It just so happens that Brother Bai Ze is also going to the outside of the Wall to test whether his weapon is effective against those ghostly things. If the White Walkers really come south, he will be a powerful ally for us," Ned instructed Benjen.
“That’s great. With this equipment, we can hold out a little longer even if the White Walkers come. I’ll take it with me when I leave,” Benjen nodded and said.
The next day, Robert dragged Ned along to the Wolfwood to hunt wild boar. Tyrion saw his chance and told his brother Jaime about the tavern duel, which made Jaime overjoyed.
Ever since the Lannister family lost their ancestral Valyrian steel sword, the Lannisters have longed to possess another one. However, such a weapon is extremely rare and hard to come by. The Lannisters own several gold mines and have offered a bounty of tens of thousands of gold dragons, yet no one has managed to acquire a Valyrian steel sword.
Jaime ran back to his room, packed his things, grabbed his sword, and headed out to find Tyrion to take him to a tavern. Meanwhile, the bored Queen Cersei was preparing to find Jaime and go somewhere to discuss the philosophy of life.
Seeing Jaime and his dwarf brother Tyrion walking out excitedly, he asked, "Jaime, where are you going?" Jaime turned around and saw his queen and lover Cersei, and explained to her:
"A swordsman who travels the continent has recently arrived in the North. He possesses a weapon comparable to the steel swords of Valyria. To obtain this weapon, one must duel him. Regardless of victory or defeat, as long as you satisfy him, you can obtain a precious sword from him."
While Jaime and Tyrion were being kept inside the castle by Cersei, Bran, who was too young to go with his father and the adults who were out hunting, took his wolf cubs to the Wolf's Tower, wanting to continue climbing it.
Before they even reached the vicinity of the tower, they were stopped by guards arranged by Sir Jori, who said he wanted to take the young masters to the Swordsman's Tavern to broaden their horizons, and that the owner, Bai Ze, would treat them to drinks they had never tasted before.
After hearing what the guard said, Bran happily ran to Sansa, Arya, and Rickon, wanting to tell his brothers and sisters the good news.
And so, Jaime and Tyrion's group, along with Bran and his children, headed toward the Swordsman's Tavern.
Inside the tavern, Bai Ze saw Tyrion and Jaime, along with a group of children being led by guards. Bai Ze knew that he had changed the plot, and Bran's broken leg would not happen again.
Tyrion led Jaime ahead, unaware that the Stark children were behind them.
"Boss Bai Ze, we've arrived. I hope my brother Jaime Lannister can provide you with a thrilling duel experience."
“Look, it’s Ser James!” someone recognized the man and whispered.
Ser Jaime was a renowned knight of Westeros, even more famous after he killed his king, Aerys II. His arrival drew considerable attention. He walked to the bar, ordered a drink, and then looked at the Stark swordsmen.
"I heard that if you can defeat the boss here, you can unlock new wines and even obtain a weapon comparable to the Valyrian steel sword?" Ser Jaime's voice was deep and magnetic.
The Wolf Clan swordsmen exchanged glances, then lowered their heads; they had no desire to provoke this renowned knight.
However, Bai Ze smiled and said, "If Sir James is interested, he can try to challenge me."
Ser James's lips curled into a slight smile, a glint of excitement in his eyes. He set down his wine glass and walked toward the arena...
Before losing his hand and being enlightened by Brienne of Tarth, Jaime was still an arrogant and proud knight. Only after being enlightened did Jaime feel like a "human being."
"Come on, Boss Bai Ze, let me experience your superior skills!"
James was ready for battle, and the surrounding spectators were eager for a new spectacle. Some of the spectators had already started betting on how long Sir James could last, and some had even offered their bets.
Bai Ze took out the Flame Shadow Sword of Kuran, ready to show Jaime Lannister his skills today.
Bah!
The two swords clashed fiercely. Bai Ze sensed James's power limit and slowly increased the force with which he held the sword. James also felt the force on the sword and knew that today's duel would not be easy to win, so he began to take it seriously.
Jaime is level 24, the same as Ned Stark, but with his age advantage, he can still have a slight edge over the old wolf. Although Bai Ze is already level 27, he will still need to use some strength to beat him.
Bai Ze and James fought evenly in the arena, and the surrounding crowd could see that James was indeed quite skilled, able to fight Bai Ze for so long.
Finally, Bai Ze slowly seized James's weakness and struck him hard in the back with his sword. James lost his balance and slid forward. The surrounding crowd cheered. Boss Bai Ze is really amazing.
Tyrion quickly stepped forward and helped Jaime up. He noticed a huge dent in the armor on Jaime's back, the middle of which was split open. Tyrion swallowed hard and asked:
"Are you alright, James?"
Jaime was a little out of breath from Bai Ze's sword strike. He took a few deep breaths before standing up with Tyrion's help.
"How was it, Boss Bai Ze? Did you enjoy yourself?"
Because he knew from Tyrion what my request for the weapon was, Jaime was prepared to continue fighting Bai Ze if Bai Ze denied it now, until Bai Ze agreed to hand over the weapon.
“That’s enough, Sir James. You are one of only two swordsmen who can fight me for this long. I acknowledge your strength, and I will present you with the sword,” Bai Ze said casually, carrying the sword.
Jaime and Tyrion exchanged glances, both seeing the joy in each other's eyes. Bai Ze then told Xiao Meng to go to the second-floor warehouse to retrieve a Legacy Sword: Moonshadow Angel's Wave Blade Longsword (Light Attribute Greatsword).
Everyone was incredibly excited to hear that they would be able to see a new sword again. Xiaomeng brought the sword down from the second floor, and everyone made way for her as she walked up to me and handed it to me.
Bai Ze held up the sword and introduced it to everyone: "This is a sword inherited from the elves, called the Legacy: Moonshadow Angel's Wave Blade Longsword. It has light attribute effects. When it hits an enemy, it will cause them to be paralyzed by electricity, especially enemies wearing heavy armor. Armor is the best medium for conducting electricity, which will paralyze the enemy's entire body and render them unable to move."
"Sigh~~~"
As everyone listened to my explanation, tears of envy streamed down their faces. Jaime and Tyrion were especially shocked. By the Seven Gods! This is truly amazing!
Bai Ze handed the sword to James. Although James was somewhat arrogant and proud, he still cared a lot about knightly honor. He solemnly accepted the sword with both hands. As he took the sword, Bai Ze leaned forward and whispered in his ear:
"Promise me that if Duke Ned goes south and becomes Hand of the King, don't go too far with him in King's Landing. Let him go if you can, and leave him some leeway. You'll understand why I'm doing this later. Don't forget the reason you killed the king!"
As a knight personally knighted by Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, his knightly honor led him to disobey Aerys Targaryen II's orders, killing the pyromancer Rosath and subsequently Aerys Targaryen II himself. His heart was good, but his oath prevented him from making choices in certain matters, leaving him no choice but to obey orders.
After hearing Bai Ze's words, Jaime knew that Ned would definitely head south to King's Landing. He looked at Bai Ze firmly and nodded heavily. Bai Ze knew that Ned's chances of survival in the south had increased even further.
Bai Ze handed the sword to James, looked up and said:
"The tavern has seen several exciting duels these past few days. Although no one has been able to defeat me, that hasn't stopped everyone from enjoying the delicious food. So, today, we're unlocking another fine spirit: rum!"
yeah!
Everyone raised their hands and cheered. On the day of the unlocking, everyone present would receive a free glass of the new wine, so everyone was overjoyed.
Bai Ze grabbed a Wolfsburg swordsman and whispered to him:
"When Lord Ned returns, tell him that I will be waiting for him at the tavern tonight, and that the things are ready for him to come and get."
After saying that, Bai Ze handed him a bottle of new wine and told him to leave first. The swordsman looked at the wine in his arms and immediately realized that if he stayed here and they saw the wine in his arms, there might be only a bottle left before he even left the house. So the swordsman turned and ran back to Wolf Castle.
When Ned and Robert returned from their hunt and learned of the news Bai Ze had given them—that the equipment and Molotov cocktails for the North were ready—Ned called Jori over and said to him:
"Tonight, gather a group of well-behaved Wolfsburg inner guard knights and retainers, and take a carriage to the Swordsman's Tavern. Bai Ze's supplies are ready."
Jory looked at Ned with delight, "Understood, I'll go prepare now, and we'll be there when it gets dark tonight." After saying that, Sir Jory went to prepare the manpower and the wagons to carry the equipment.
In the evening, Bai Ze and Xiao Meng finished cleaning up the trash in the shop and left the door unlocked, waiting for Ned's arrival. Suddenly, they remembered that when Longma's horse cavalry attacked the White Walkers, they were enchanted with fire swords by the Red Witch Melisandre.
Dungeons also have elemental enchantment potions! There's the Fire Lizard Fire Potion, the Alicia Light Potion, and the Snowjack Ice Potion. Except for the Dark Potion, which doesn't seem to have much effect, the other three are great for dealing with White Walkers!
I'll also prepare a batch for Ned and send it to the Great Wall. After saying that, I asked the system and purchased 100,000 bottles of each of the three types of potions; that should be enough.
After dark, Ned and his group arrived at the tavern. "Bai Ze, we're here," Ned greeted me.
"It's good that you're here. I happen to have some new potions to share with you. There are three kinds: the Fire Lizard Fire Potion, the Alicia Light Potion, and the Snowjack Ice Potion. They can all enchant the user, causing damage and effects of the corresponding attribute when attacking enemies. However, the effect only lasts for one minute. But there are plenty of them, so just drink them!" Bai Ze said calmly.
To everyone else, it was a miracle! Drinking a potion that could attack enchantments was something they had never even heard of, let alone seen in Westeros!
"Good, good, this gives us another layer of protection against the White Walkers."
Ned was delighted; Bai Ze always managed to surprise him in different ways!
"I have prepared 4 high-quality broadswords for you. Send a batch to the Great Wall, and you can use the rest to equip your respective territories."
I have prepared 2 sets of the Mystic Steel Armor Set (shoulder pads, leg guards, boots, chainmail, belt). You can use these armor sets to distribute to the main knights and the guards of various families. For ordinary swordsmen, just exchange the discarded ones for them.
We've prepared 5 Molotov cocktails for you. These are mainly for defending the city; their offensive effect isn't as good as attribute-enchanted potions. Keep some of these Molotov cocktails here at Wolfsburg, and send the rest to the Great Wall.
"10 bottles of each of the three types of potions should be more than enough for you. However, these potions must be kept secret for now. They are intended to deal with the White Walkers. Don't let anyone with malicious intent know about them and use them against us!"
After hearing Bai Ze's words, Ned and the others were stunned. Other people used full-armor armor by the number of pieces, but this was tens of thousands at a time, which made them a little uncomfortable.
"Thank you again for your generosity, Brother Bai Ze. The Northern Territory will always remember you!"
"Alright, stop being so mushy. Let them load the goods. Be careful not to break the potions and Molotov cocktails. Handle them with care. Lord Ned, come here. There are some things I need to discuss with you privately."
Bai Ze's serious tone made Ned realize the importance of the matter, and he went up to the second-floor room with me.
Bai Ze led Ned to a guest room and took out a regular life potion. Ned looked at the red potion, wondering what its properties and effects were. Then he saw Bai Ze take out a dagger and slash at his arm. Ned was shocked and quickly grabbed the hand holding the knife.
"What are you doing, Brother Bai Ze? What are you doing?"
"Lord Ned, don't rush, please watch carefully!"
After Bai Ze finished speaking, he ignored his bleeding arm, opened the life potion and took a sip. Ned was shocked to see that Bai Ze's bleeding arm began to slowly recover until it was completely healed, without even leaving a scar. Ned stood there dumbfounded. What was this!
By the ancient gods!
Restore life!
This is a miracle!
"See this? This is a life-restoring potion. You're going south with Robert, and King's Landing is sure to be fraught with danger. Who knows what might happen? This potion can save your life in a critical moment!"
"As long as you're not dead yet, open this and drink it immediately. You'll recover from your injuries instantly. Keep this potion safe. If you get into trouble in King's Landing, remember to use it." After saying this, Bai Ze handed Duke Ned a box containing dozens of bottles of life potions.
Ned looked at Bai Ze, holding the medicine box in his arms, not knowing how to express his gratitude for Bai Ze's help.
"Alright, stop spacing out. Here's some advice: Don't trust any of the ministers in King's Landing, especially Littlefinger. Keep a close eye on your wife and don't let her leave Winterfell."
Once you arrive in King's Landing, trust Arya's words; it will be good for you. Be careful of eavesdroppers in the Hand of the King. Before you leave, contact Ser Wyman at White Harbor and prepare a fleet to remain in Blackwater Bay, King's Landing. If anything happens, return to the North by sea. There are many things that can only be done while you're alive; once you're dead, everything is meaningless.
Ned remembered what Bai Ze said, because now, everything Bai Ze said seemed quite important. Ned nodded to Bai Ze:
“Yes, I will take your word for it. Before I leave, I will send someone to contact Sir Wyman and have him prepare a fleet to wait for me at Blackwater Bay.”
"Oh, right, if something happens to Robert, you can use the potion to save him, and then you can all watch a good show!"
Bai Ze said mysteriously. Ned was puzzled as to how Bai Ze knew Robert would be in trouble. Could Bai Ze possibly use future witchcraft?
After packing everything up, Ned led the group back to Wolfsburg with their equipment and potions. Before heading south, he needed to arrange the distribution of the equipment and ask trusted people to distribute and transport the equipment to the Great Wall.
Since Bai Ze said he would keep a close eye on his wife, then this matter can be left to Catelyn. Let Rodrik accompany her, and if there is any emergency, let a retainer run errands. She cannot leave Winterfell, so this should be fine.
