Chapter 27 An Unexpected Reunion

When Bai Hongsheng carried Dahuang to the front hall, Gu Yan and the other three were sitting comfortably on benches, enjoying the sunset and chatting occasionally.

"Woof woof woof!" Big Yellow was a little angry at everyone ignoring him.

"Why do I hear Big Yellow barking?" Shen Mujin turned her head in confusion and met Bai Hongsheng's gaze. "Shengsheng?"

"Shengsheng, why did you bring Dahuang here?" Gu Yan heard Shen Mujin's words, turned around, and quickly waved to the little bean.

Bai Hongsheng didn't mind that Da Huang was heavy, and insisted on carrying Da Huang to the table where they were before putting it down.

Gu Yan looked at Bai Hongsheng, who was smiling broadly, and raised his hand to wipe the sweat from his forehead. "Did you have fun?"

"Happy!" Bai Hongsheng leaned against Gu Yan, tilting his little face up and smiling as he raised his hand in agreement.

"Why did you decide to bring Dahuang out?" Gu Yan picked up an empty cup, poured half a cup of tea, and carefully blew on it before handing it to Bai Hongsheng. "Drink slowly, be careful it's hot."

"Thank you, Second Sister." Bai Hongsheng took the tea, seemingly very thirsty, and without caring that it was still a little hot, he drank the cup in one gulp. "I saw that Dahuang was all alone in the backyard, so I wanted to take it for a walk in the front. Second Sister, may I take Dahuang outside to play for a while?"

Looking at the little boy's longing eyes, and then at the equally eager-looking big yellow dog at his feet, she finally softened and nodded. "Sure, but be careful of pedestrians and carriages, okay?"

"Yay, I got it!" Bai Hongsheng put down his teacup, shouted happily, and then rushed out with Da Huang, chasing each other in the open space outside the inn.

Happiness seems to be contagious; hearing the cheerful laughter, smiles appeared on the faces of everyone present. Gu Yan even prepared a large cup of tea in advance, waiting for the little one to drink it when he returned from playing.

Fortunately, it was dusk, so the sunlight wasn't too harsh, and the temperature was quite pleasant. Neither the dog nor the person seemed tired, running several laps around the gate. Gu Yan, estimating the time, planned to call Bai Hongsheng back to "replenish his fluids," but when she looked up, she saw Bai Hongsheng staring blankly ahead, standing motionless.

Bai Heming and the other two noticed Bai Hongsheng's unusual behavior and were about to get up to check on him when they saw Bai Hongsheng spread his arms wide and run excitedly forward, saying something as he ran, but they couldn't hear what he was saying because they were far away.

"Sheng Sheng!" Gu Yan watched Bai Hongsheng's retreating figure and anxiously wanted to chase after him.

He had only taken two steps when Xuan Yi stopped him, "No need to go, Sheng Sheng is back."

"No, I won't feel at ease without taking a look." Gu Yan shook his head, still wanting to find out.

"Don't worry, Sheng Sheng just ran into someone she knows." Bai Heming, who had been silent until now, explained to Gu Yan.

Gu Yan was very puzzled. She craned her neck to look in the direction of the little boy, narrowed her eyes, and finally saw that there were indeed two men following behind Bai Hongsheng, and they were two acquaintances.

During the conversation, the "two acquaintances" led Bai Hongsheng and Da Huang closer and closer. Bai Hongsheng couldn't wait to wave his arms and shout, "Big brother, second sister, look who I brought!"

The three people and the dog stepped into the inn. The little boy excitedly rushed to Gu Yan's side, tugged at her sleeve, and said happily, "Second sister, look! It's Brother Hengzhi and Brother Jiang Si."

Xie Zhi and his companion, who were originally at the counter keeping accounts, heard Bai Hongsheng's call and saw the two approaching the inn. They quickly went to the door to greet them. After hearing what Bai Hongsheng said to Gu Yan, they asked with some surprise, "So you two know each other."

Li Hengzhi nodded, first bowing to Xie Zhi and Chen Kangnian with clasped hands, saying, "Alliance Leader Xie, Mr. Chen." Then he greeted Bai Heming and the others, saying, "Heming, Miss Bai, it's been a long time."

“It seems we are destined to meet. Actually, the guests I was talking about today are Hengzhi and Jiang Si. I didn’t expect you two to be old acquaintances.” Chen Kangnian led the two inside and sat down next to Gu Yan and his group.

"We're not old acquaintances," Bai Heming said, not expecting to run into Li Hengzhi and the others here. "It's thanks to the help of the two young heroes that my siblings and I were able to leave the Bai residence alive."

Looking at the two handsome and elegant young swordsmen in front of her, Shen Mujin took advantage of the moment when no one was paying attention and leaned close to Gu Yan, whispering, "Not bad, you've met two handsome guys all of a sudden. Why didn't you tell me such important information?"

“Why didn’t I tell you? Did you see the one in the blue clothes? I was being chased with him, do you remember me?” Gu Yan turned his head slightly, trying to evoke Shen Mujin’s memory through some features.

Xuan Yi noticed that Shen Mujin was focusing her attention on other men with a curious expression. She was even chatting and laughing with Gu Yan, which annoyed him. He asked loudly, "Ayan, who are these two? Introduce them to us!"

Gu Yan was chatting happily when she suddenly heard someone call her name, and it was Xuan Yi who called her. For some reason, she felt a chill run down her spine. If there weren't so many people present, she really wanted to ask this Grand Palace Master Xuan what kind of trouble he was up to this time.

Gu Yan gave Xuan Yi a stiff smile, cleared his throat, and began to introduce themselves.

"This young swordsman in white is Li Hengzhi from Kunlun Ruins, and this young swordsman in blue is Jiang Si from Qingfeng Sword Sect."

"The girl in purple next to me is Shen Xiaowan, and this is Xuan Yu."

After exchanging greetings and taking their seats, Bai Hongsheng was overjoyed to see familiar faces. He ran to Li Hengzhi's side, looked up at him, and asked, "Brother Hengzhi, you've finally arrived! You said you were coming to visit me, and I've been waiting for you for so long."

Li Hengzhi smiled gently, "I was quite busy a while ago, but as soon as I finished, I came to see Shengsheng. How are you doing here, Shengsheng? Is your older brother feeling better?"

"It's really great! Everyone is so kind to Shengsheng. Shengsheng loves this place and everyone at the inn. Big Brother is also very kind. He hasn't needed to take his medicine since coming here, and he can even take Shengsheng out for a walk every day."

The others in the room were amused by Bai Hongsheng's innocent tone, especially Chen Kangnian, who stroked Shengsheng's little head and said with some emotion, "Shengsheng is so good, we all like Shengsheng very much."

Bai Hongsheng covered his mouth, leaning shyly against the table. Just as he was about to ask something else, Uncle Peng peeked out from behind the kitchen curtain: "Get ready, it's time to eat. A few people, come help me carry this out."

Upon hearing about dinner, Bai Hongsheng disregarded everything else and was about to run towards the kitchen when Gu Yan decisively grabbed his collar, saying, "Don't go and join the fun. Go upstairs and call your brothers Maidong and Maiqiu for dinner."

Bai Hongsheng nodded, accepted the other task, and immediately ran upstairs to call for help.

Upon hearing Uncle Peng's words, Shen Mujin grabbed Xuan Yi and headed towards the kitchen. Gu Yan immediately followed Shen Mujin, and inadvertently turned around to see Jiang Si following behind her.

"Hey? Young Master Jiang? What brings you here?"

"I'll help you," Jiang Si replied expressionlessly, as if it were a very ordinary thing.

"Ah, okay, thank you for your help." Gu Yan rubbed her hands together, unsure how to reply. Was she really going to kick them out? With her small frame, how could she possibly make them leave? Never mind.

Shen Mujin and the other two picked up the trays one by one with practiced ease and walked out. Gu Yan walked forward while looking back from time to time, "Young Master Jiang, is it heavy?"

Gu Yan regretted asking the question immediately. Jiang Si had practiced martial arts for many years and had handled more types of weapons than she had ever carried a plate. How could she ask if it was heavy? She was simply out of her mind.

Unfortunately, words spoken are like water spilled; Gu Yan smiled awkwardly and decided not to look back and "ask for trouble."

Many hands make light work, and soon a sumptuous dinner was laid out. Chen Kangnian even brought out his 15-year-old "Drunken Spring Breeze" wine to celebrate this encounter.

"Old Chen, how did you meet those two young heroes? Tell us quickly." Aunt Hong held a bowl, her face full of gossip.

"Where did I encounter this? Let our knowledgeable Lao Xie tell us about it," Chen Kangnian said with a smile, turning the conversation to Xie Zhi.

Xie Zhi glanced helplessly at Chen Kangnian and briefly explained the situation. "As everyone knows, things have been happening in Wuzhou recently. Hengzhi and Jiang Si share the same goal, so we were bound to run into each other."

After listening, Gu Yan subtly pursed her lips, as if she had said nothing at all. She suddenly thought of the pursuit by the Xuan Yue Sect before they parted ways, and felt it was inappropriate to bring it up now. After thinking for a moment, she decided to ask in private.

After dinner, Chen Kangnian handed the room number to Li Hengzhi and Jiang Si respectively, and pointed to the stairwell, "Your rooms are on the second floor. Go up from there, turn right, and it's the third and fourth room. Go and see if they suit you. If there are any problems, you can change rooms anytime."

Gu Yan, who was helping Shen Mujin clear the dishes, looked up in surprise and exclaimed "Ah!"

Perhaps the voice was a bit loud, because Chen Kangnian looked at Gu Yan with amusement and asked, "What's wrong?"

"...It's nothing," Gu Yan waved her hand awkwardly, then lowered her head again, focusing intently on clearing the dishes. She truly hadn't expected Li Hengzhi and his companion to be staying here.

Bai Heming looked at his silly younger sister and sighed helplessly. He then led the somewhat tired Bai Hongsheng, who had just finished eating, to say goodbye, "We'll go upstairs first. Shengsheng has been playing all afternoon and is a bit sleepy. I'll take him upstairs to rest."

Seeing Bai Heming about to leave, Li Hengzhi quickly grabbed the key in his hand and followed a few steps. "Heming, wait for me. I just arrived here. Could you please show me to my room?"

Bai Heming didn't speak, but glanced at Li Hengzhi, as if waiting for him to catch up, before turning around and leading Bai Hongsheng upstairs.

Gu Yan nudged Shen Mujin beside him and gestured with his chin to make her look. "See? I told you Li Hengzhi and my older brother have a special relationship."

"Didn't realize... It's just going up the stairs together?"

"Oh dear, why is it that out of all these people, Li Hengzhi only followed my older brother up the stairs?" Gu Yan said, somewhat exasperated.

"Wasn't it just Brother Bai who wanted to go upstairs? So, according to you, Young Master Jiang is tidying up with us now because you have a special relationship with him?" Shen Mujin shifted her gaze to Jiang Si opposite her and gave Gu Yan a mischievous smile.

"Huh? What kind of nonsense is this, this substitution of equal quantities? Never mind, I'm not talking to you anymore." Gu Yan was a little confused, so he simply picked up the wooden basin containing the bowls and chopsticks and walked towards the kitchen.

Unfortunately, she underestimated the weight of the wooden basin; even with all her might, she couldn't budge it.

"Hey, I don't believe it."

Gu Yan rolled up his sleeves to his upper arms, rubbed his hands together, assumed a horse stance, and channeled all his strength into his arms. He silently counted "one, two, three, lift!" and actually managed to lift the wooden basin. Of course, Gu Yan would have been even happier if Jiang Si hadn't helped him.

Gu Yan followed Jiang Si as he moved the wooden basin to the open space in the back kitchen. After politely thanking Jiang Si, she skillfully moved a small stool next to the wooden basin, then picked up a large ladle and scooped several large spoonfuls of water into the basin. Finally, she added cleaning solution to prepare for cleaning.

Jiang Si didn't leave; he simply stood in a corner where it wouldn't get in the way, watching Xuan Yi carry in the second wooden basin, followed closely by Shen Mujin. Gu Yan expertly repeated the same actions with the second basin, while Shen Mujin took out a new wooden basin, placed it on the other side, and filled it with water as well.

Watching Shen Mujin and Xuan Yi work together to wash and rinse, Jiang Si followed suit, finding a small stool and a new basin, filling it with water, and moving it near Gu Yan.

Gu Yan looked up at Jiang Si sitting next to her with some confusion, hesitated for a moment, and said, "Young Master Jiang, you can leave things to us from now on. You should go and get some rest."
