Chapter 26 Master Xie and Shopkeeper Chen
Gu Yan never imagined that when he woke up, the relationship between Shen Mujin and Xuan Yi would undergo a qualitative leap.
Gu Yan felt heartbroken about this. Sure enough, no man is a good person, especially the man who stole her best friend.
Bai Heming: Please do not attack indiscriminately, thank you.
Because he was worried about Bai Hongsheng, who hadn't eaten lunch, Gu Yan didn't sleep very soundly during his afternoon nap and could only doze off against the edge of the bed.
In a daze, I seemed to hear a knock on the door. I forced my sleepy eyes open and reluctantly opened the door, only to see Shen Mujin standing outside with a bright smile.
Gu Yan was a little surprised by the bright smile. "You... did you find five million? You're practically beaming with joy."
Shen Mujin pulled Gu Yan outside and even thoughtfully closed the door. Holding Gu Yan's hand, she blinked excitedly, a faint blush spreading across her fair cheeks.
"Ayan, I'm done for."
"Huh?" Gu Yan had probably just woken up and was still a little dazed. "Where did you fall? Are you hurt? Did you hit your head? Why are you so happy after falling?"
“…” Shen Mujin almost burst out laughing when she heard Gu Yan’s answer. Just as she was about to speak again, she saw Gu Yan’s expression change drastically. “Wait, say it again, what’s wrong with you?” He grabbed her arm and asked with a slightly serious tone.
"I'm done for," Shen Mujin said, looking into Gu Yan's eyes and repeating each word carefully.
"Have you thought it through? Are you sure?"
"Yes, I've thought it through and I'm sure." Shen Mujin nodded solemnly.
"Why him?" Gu Yan hesitated for a moment, but still asked.
"Maybe it's because it's him. I can't explain why I'm attracted to him, but I know very well that he's the reason I can't be attracted to anyone else." Shen Mujin thought for a moment, perhaps fate is just that hard to describe.
"Alright then." Gu Yan, who had been forced to eat a mouthful of "dog food" (a Chinese slang term for witnessing public displays of affection), felt a little tired. She shouldn't have asked so many questions. But seeing Shen Mujin's firm and serious expression, she still patted Shen Mujin's shoulder, "No matter what you decide, I believe in you."
"Of course, if anyone dares to have any other ideas, don't blame me for being impolite to them!" Gu Yan rubbed his hands together, wishing he could show Shen Mujin right there how to beat Xuan Yi up.
Shen Mujin knew that Gu Yan was doing it all for her own good, so she opened her arms and hugged Gu Yan tightly, saying, "Ayan, thank you."
Gu Yan reached out and put his arm around Shen Mujin, gently patting her back, and whispered, "Still so polite with me. Looks like this magical trip wasn't entirely fruitless after all?"
"Then why don't you prepare something and reap the rewards?"
Gu Yan released Shen Mujin and listed the criteria on his fingers: "Sigh, I just haven't met the right person yet. He definitely has to be handsome, after all, I'm a sucker for good looks. Secondly, he has to be good at martial arts and talented. Of course, he also has to be rich, powerful, and have status..."
"Stop!" Shen Mujin stopped Gu Yan with one hand and touched her forehead with the other. "What are you daydreaming about in broad daylight? People like this are extremely rare, and it's hard to even meet one, let alone have a romantic relationship. Why don't you just stay single?"
Gu Yan knew her standards were too idealistic, and she might meet someone who didn't meet any of the criteria, yet still capture her heart at first sight. But since she had already said it, Gu Yan could only stubbornly continue, "Hmph, you still have to have dreams, what if they come true?"
As Bai Heming led the just-woke-up Bai Hongsheng outside, they saw the two whispering to each other by the railing outside the door. He smiled and greeted them.
Upon seeing Bai Heming, Gu Yan immediately waved happily, "Big brother, big brother, guess what happened! It's incredibly good news!"
Bai Heming glanced at Shen Mujin and chuckled knowingly, "It seems to be good news for Xiaowan. Congratulations on the happy ending for Xiaowan and Palace Master Xuanyi."
"Thank you, Brother Bai." Shen Mujin smiled shyly, revealing a shallow dimple on her left cheek that disappeared in an instant.
Gu Yan looked at Bai Heming with some surprise, "As expected of the eldest brother, you guessed so accurately."
Bai Hongsheng looked around, somewhat confused, and had no choice but to obediently ask, "Big brother, what are you and the sisters talking about? I don't understand."
Gu Yan squatted down, looked at Bai Hongsheng's big, puzzled eyes, and said with a smile, "Let's talk about Brother Xuanyu. From now on, not only can Sister Mumu play with you, but Brother Xuanyu can play with you too."
"Really? But Brother Xuanyu sometimes looks fierce." Bai Hongsheng looked at Shen Mujin, somewhat uncertain.
"Really, if he dares to be mean to you in the future, just tell Sister Mumu that he's most afraid of you, Sister Mumu, and Sister Mumu will give him a good scolding." Gu Yan continued, not caring that the other person she was talking about had already appeared behind her.
“Miss Bai seems to know me quite well.” Xuan Yi’s sudden voice startled Gu Yan, who fell to the ground with a thud.
Why did Xuan Yi appear right after she finished speaking ill of him, and why did no one remind her?
"Who knows you?" Gu Yan gritted his teeth and glared at Xuan Yi. He quickly stood up and glanced at the other three people present, seemingly accusing them of "not informing" him.
Fearing another conflict between the two, Shen Mujin quickly went to Xuan Yi's side and asked, "What's wrong? Is there something you need to talk to me about?"
Xuan Yi shook his head slightly, his eyes softening as he looked at Shen Mujin. "It's nothing. I just noticed you hadn't come down yet, so I came up to check on you."
Left standing there to watch the "dog food" (a Chinese slang term for witnessing public displays of affection), Gu Yan wished he could disappear on the spot. He immediately pulled Bai Hongsheng and Bai Heming downstairs without looking back, saying, "You two can continue chatting, we're going downstairs first."
The three of them had just come downstairs when they ran into Aunt Hong and her friends who were returning from offering incense at the temple. When Aunt Hong saw Bai Hongsheng, she immediately took out a bright red candied hawthorn from the vegetable basket she was carrying and waved to Bai Hongsheng with a kind smile.
"Sheng Sheng, look! What's this?"
"Candied hawthorn!" Bai Hongsheng let go of Gu Yan and immediately ran towards Aunt Hong with his short legs, heading for the candied hawthorn in her hand.
"Thank you, Aunt Hong." Bai Hongsheng happily accepted the candied hawthorn, his hands trembling with delight.
"You're being so polite with Aunt Hong. If you like it, Aunt Hong will buy it for you next time."
Uncle Peng, who lived in the backyard, heard a noise in the front hall and thought that someone might have returned, so he came over to check.
Just then, Bai Hongsheng was enjoying a candied hawthorn. Uncle Peng patted the little boy's head and asked with concern, "Shengsheng, are you hungry since you didn't eat lunch? If you are, what would you like to eat? Uncle Peng will make it for you."
"Sheng Sheng didn't eat lunch? You must be starving. Did your Uncle Peng's lunch not suit your taste? Tell Aunt Hong what you want to eat, and Aunt Hong will make it for you."
Bai Hongsheng quickly shook his head, solemnly raising his little head to refuse, "Thank you, Uncle Peng and Aunt Hong. I'm not hungry. My older brother said that you should do what you're supposed to do at the right time. I missed lunch because of my own reasons, so even if I'm hungry, I'll hold out until dinner."
Uncle Peng looked at Bai Hongsheng's unusually serious expression and nodded in agreement.
"Sheng Sheng, that's great! We'll have something delicious tonight." Aunt Hong even gave Bai Hongsheng a thumbs up, praising him directly.
The little boy blushed deeply at their compliments, his face practically glowing with pride, as if he were as beautiful as the candied hawthorn in his hand. Too shy to look up, he simply grabbed the candied hawthorn, said, "I'm going to play with Big Yellow," and dashed off to the backyard.
The others, seeing Bai Hongsheng's somewhat "fleeing" figure, could no longer help but burst into laughter.
When Uncle Chen, the shopkeeper, and Master Xie entered, they saw a group of people laughing heartily. Infected by the cheerful atmosphere, they asked curiously, "What are you all laughing about? Why are you all laughing so happily?"
"Old Chen, you're back late. You missed a good show." Aunt Hong's eyes crinkled with laughter, her whole face beaming.
"Haha, then it seems I'll have to come back earlier next time. By the way, Dapeng, cook a few more dishes tonight, we have some guests coming later."
"No problem, shopkeeper." Uncle Peng nodded, then looked up at the position of the sun outside the window, estimating the time; it was about time to start preparing dinner.
Aunt Hong had been with Uncle Peng for over twenty years and knew his every move well. After greeting the others in the hall, she followed Uncle Peng to the kitchen to get busy.
Mai Dong and Mai Qiu had been walking around the temple with Aunt Hong for almost a day, and they were a little tired, so they took advantage of the time before dinner to go back to their rooms to rest.
The hall, which had just been filled with laughter and chatter, was now empty except for Gu Yan, Bai Heming, Uncle Chen, and Master Xie. Gu Yan poured tea for Uncle Chen and Master Xie, and asked, "Uncle Chen, where have you and Master Xie been these past few days?"
"We're all getting old, where can we go for fun? We can only walk around the streets."
"Oh." She didn't believe that someone could wander the streets for more than half a month. But it was someone else's business and had nothing to do with her, so Gu Yan didn't ask any further.
"Where's Xiao Wan? You two are usually inseparable." Uncle Chen looked around the hall and found that Shen Mujin was not there.
"She's upstairs. Is there something you need to see her for?"
"It's nothing, just asking." As soon as Uncle Chen finished speaking, Xie Daxia, who had been silent all along, surprisingly asked again.
"Has the new guest left?"
"Oh, no. They're upstairs too." Gu Yan didn't immediately realize who the new guest was.
"It seems some people won't be able to leave anytime soon," Xie Zhi snorted, his tone somewhat ominous.
"Don't worry, Xiao Wan knows him, and he came here for Xiao Wan this time. Don't worry." Gu Yan couldn't understand what Uncle Chen and Master Xie were saying, so she had no choice but to turn to her older brother for help again.
Unexpectedly, Bai Heming became so engrossed in staring at a teacup that he refused to look up at Gu Yan, much to Gu Yan's frustration, which she did.
However, after kicking and running away, Gu Yan couldn't stand the silent atmosphere in the hall, and the more she looked at Xie Daxia, the more he resembled her former head teacher. Who could sit at the same table with their head teacher and chat and laugh? Nobody!
Gu Yan picked up the teapot, made an excuse to go refill the water, and quickly headed towards the backyard, never to return.
Although Xie Zhi had been staying at the inn for some time, he followed Chen Kangnian (Uncle Chen) out early and returned late every day, and only exchanged nods with the other guests at the inn. He looked at the young man in white in front of him, who was leisurely drinking tea, and felt that he looked familiar, but he couldn't remember where he had seen him before.
"Kang Nian said that Young Master Bai comes from the Bai family, but the Bai family has been occupied for some time now. I wonder what Young Master Bai's plans are?"
Bai Heming nodded, about to reply, when he saw Chen Kangnian slam Xie Zhi's teacup down in front of him. "Drink your tea, why worry about so much?"
After saying that, she quickly smiled apologetically at Bai Heming, "Young Master Bai, please forgive him. He's just like that, always wanting to ask about everything and meddle in everything."
"Uncle Chen, you flatter me. What Master Xie said is true to the current situation. I alone could never take back the Bai family mansion. As long as my siblings and I are safe and sound, we can forget about everything else."
“That’s right, being safe and sound is the best thing. You all have a seat, I’m going to find Dapeng.” Chen Kangnian glanced at Xie Zhi worriedly, then quickly walked to the back. He planned to go and come back quickly, lest that inflexible guy cause him trouble again.
"To simply hand over such a vast Bai mansion to someone else, Young Master Bai certainly has a very open mind," Xie Zhi said sarcastically as Chen Kangnian walked away.
