Chapter 17 A New Inn, A New Beginning

the next morning.

Gu Yan had just finished washing up when she heard Bai Hongsheng calling happily from the doorway, "Second sister, wake up!"

Gu Yan quickly opened the door and let the little one in. "Shh, keep your voice down. You can't make loud noises in the hallway, you know? It'll disturb other people, okay?"

Bai Hongsheng imitated Gu Yan, pressing his left index finger to his lips and whispering, "Shh, okay, Second Sister, I know."

Gu Yan almost laughed at Bai Hongsheng's adorable appearance. She pinched the little bean curd's cheek; it was so soft and nice to squeeze. "You don't need to be so quiet indoors. Looks like you're all ready?"

"Yes! My brother and I are all packed and ready to go." Bai Hongsheng proudly puffed out his chest.

“We’re so great! Now let’s go find our eldest brother and set off!”

The three of them, carrying only a few pieces of luggage, settled their recent bills with the innkeeper and left the inn, heading towards the Four Seasons Inn in the west of the city.

Gu Yan led Bai Hongsheng ahead, the little boy just like Gu Yan himself, full of curiosity about everything. Bai Heming, walking behind, smiled and said to Gu Yan, "Why does Shengsheng look so familiar?"

"How should I know!" Gu Yan turned his head and stuck out his tongue at Bai Heming, then turned back to look at the dough figurine maker with Sheng Sheng.

"Sheng Sheng, which one do you like? Your second sister will buy it for you." Looking at Sheng Sheng's focused expression, Gu Yanhao said generously.

Bai Hongsheng shook his head, "No need, Second Sister, I'll just take a look."

Gu Yan patted the little boy's head. This child was so sensible, so sensible that it broke her heart. "It's alright, your second sister has enough money. Just tell me which one you like."

"Then...can I have one that wears purple? Because my mother used to wear a purple dress all the time." Sheng Sheng lowered her head and said somewhat indistinctly.

Seeing the little boy's aggrieved look, Gu Yan felt a pang of heartache. "Of course, no problem."

Then Gu Yan pulled Bai Heming, who was standing behind him, to the front of the stall and said to the old man making dough figurines, "Old man, I'll take this one in purple clothes. Could you please make three more in the likeness of the three of us?"

"Second sister?" Bai Hongsheng looked up in surprise upon hearing this.

“Of course, the whole family should be together,” Gu Yan explained briskly, patting Bai Hongsheng’s little shoulder. “Look, look! Doesn’t the old man’s sculpture look like you? Isn’t it amazing!”

The old man who made the dough figurines was very skilled. He glanced at Gu Yan and the other two and started making them quickly. In no time, three lifelike dough figurines appeared in front of them.

"Wow, Grandpa, you're amazing! It looks like you're looking in a mirror." The old man was amused by Bai Hongsheng's words. Seeing the adorable Bai Hongsheng holding the dough figurine and refusing to let go, he even gave him a small wooden box to store it.

"Sheng Sheng, from now on your task is to take good care of our noodle-making family. Are you confident you can accomplish it?"

"I'm confident I can do it!" Upon hearing Gu Yan's question, Sheng Sheng quickly raised her head, straightened her chest, and answered in a serious and methodical manner.

"Grandpa, how much are these four dough figurines?" Gu Yan was almost charmed by Bai Hongsheng's adorable voice, and asked the price while secretly laughing.

Forty coins in total.

Just as Gu Yan was about to pay, a hand suddenly reached out from behind him and handed over the money.

"I paid for her," Jiang Si's voice followed immediately.

"Huh?" Gu Yan turned around and saw that it was Jiang Si and Li Hengzhi. "No, no, how can I let you spend money?"

"It's nothing, just consider it a farewell gift for Sheng Sheng."

Hearing Jiang Si's words, Gu Yan couldn't refuse any longer. Bai Hongsheng, on the other hand, ran to Jiang Si's side, looked up, and thanked him with a smile, "Thank you, Brother Jiang Si. Once we find a place to stay, Brother Jiang Si and Brother Hengzhi must come and visit us!"

Jiang Si looked at Bai Hongsheng, smiled gently, and nodded, "Okay, I'll definitely go."

Li Hengzhi looked at Jiang Si interacting with the child and raised his eyebrows in surprise. Is this still the cold-hearted and icy Jiang Si I know?

His gaze was immediately drawn to Bai Heming, who was standing to the side, and he took the opportunity to quietly move over and strike up a conversation: "Are you feeling better lately?"

"Hmm, much better," Bai Heming glanced at the person getting closer and closer, took a step back, and nodded in reply.

Seeing Bai Heming's actions, Li Hengzhi stopped in his tracks. "The western part of the city is relatively safer because there are fewer people there, but it would be safer to leave Wuzhou as soon as possible."

"How did you know we were going to the west of the city?" Bai Heming looked up at Li Hengzhi with a puzzled expression.

"Ah, that was Jiang Si who told me. Maybe it was your sister who told Jiang Si." Li Hengzhi pushed Jiang Si aside without any mercy.

Better to die for your fellow Daoist than for me!

Bai Heming glanced at Jiang Si, who was talking to Gu Yan, snorted coldly, and didn't pursue the matter further. He took a few steps towards Gu Yan and said, "It's getting late, let's hurry on our way."

Gu Yan nodded, greeted Jiang Si, and then took Bai Hongsheng's hand and turned to leave with Bai Heming.

After walking for a while, Bai Heming suddenly asked, "Yan Huai, have you told Jiang Si where our new place is?"

Gu Yan shook his head blankly: "No. What's wrong, brother?"

"It's nothing, just asking. How much longer until we get there?"

Gu Yan looked around to confirm, "We're almost there. Just walk to the end of this street and turn the corner."

"We're almost there! I'm starving. Big brother, second sister, what are we going to eat later?" Bai Hongsheng asked, looking up at the two of them while holding the dough figurine box.

"Little glutton." Gu Yan gently pinched Bai Hongsheng's little nose. "Big brother, Shengsheng. Let me tell you, don't let the small size of this inn fool you, the food here is pretty good, which is one of the reasons I chose this place."

"How good is it?" Bai Heming raised an eyebrow, slightly doubtful.

"It's something that can only be understood intuitively, not explained in words. You'll find out when you eat it." Gu Yan kept everyone in suspense.

Gu Yan discovered this small inn after his failed "interview" the next day. The lonely three-story building was tucked away in a corner. Upon entering, there was only the innkeeper and a waiter. Gu Yan intended to just have a quick bite, but the dishes that were served stunned him.

It was just a simple stir-fried shredded vegetables and Dongpo pork, but the familiar taste surprised Gu Yan.

This is the taste of what Mumu made!

Could it be Mumu?

Thinking of this, Gu Yan could no longer sit still. He stood up abruptly and ran towards the kitchen amidst the astonished gazes of the waiter and the manager, only to be stopped by the waiter who had recovered his senses.

"This guest is not allowed to enter the kitchen without permission."

"Please, sir, could you let me meet the person who made this dish? Please, it's really important to me."

The waiter looked at the very excited but earnest girl in front of him, and after receiving the shopkeeper's approval, he went to the back and called out the head chef.

Looking at the burly male chef in front of him, Gu Yan tentatively asked, "Did you make these two dishes?"

"Yes, is there a problem?" The cook nodded as he looked at the unfamiliar young girl in front of him.

"No problem. One, two, three, four, five."

"Six, seven, eight, nine, ten?" The cook was also a little confused about what the girl meant.

Not hearing the familiar code, Gu Yan first breathed a sigh of relief, thankfully Mu Mu hadn't turned into a bear-like giant. Then, feeling sad and disappointed at not finding anyone, he dejectedly returned to his table.

What can relieve worries? Only eating.

But in the following days, when Gu Yan came to eat again, the familiar taste gradually disappeared, as if the taste he had eaten that day was just his imagination.

Gu Yan was unwilling to give up. Since she had no clues about Mu Mu and the others, she was determined to seize this opportunity and try anything, even if it seemed hopeless.

Turning the corner, a three-story building came into view of the three. Gu Yan went in first, went straight to the front desk, and tapped lightly on the counter. "Uncle Chen, I'm here. Is the room you reserved for me still available?"

"Yes, yes, yes, who else is in my little inn besides you? Go upstairs and put your things down first. I'll have Maiqiu go up and call you when lunch is ready."

The shopkeeper was a thin, middle-aged man with an ordinary appearance, but he looked refreshing and comfortable, and seemed to be quite familiar with Gu Yan.

Gu Yan: How could we not be familiar? The money his inn has earned these past two days has all come from me. I'm practically his sugar daddy.

Gu Yan took the key and led Bai Heming and Xiao Douding upstairs. As they walked, he explained, "I used to eat here almost every day at noon for a while, and we got to know each other quite well. The manager here is surnamed Chen, and we all call him Uncle Chen. The waiter is Mai Qiu, the chef in the kitchen is Uncle Peng, and there are also Aunt Hong, Mai Dong, and Xiao Wan who help out with odd jobs."

Gu Yan's room was at the far end of the corridor. Upon opening the door, a round table came into view, with beds on both the left and right sides of the table, each thoughtfully separated by a screen.

Gu Yan asked with a hint of pride, "How about that! The three of us can sleep in one room. Isn't that a great way to save money?"

"It's really quite good." Bai Heming led Bai Hongsheng on a brief tour and affirmed.

"But it seems like there aren't many other guests at this inn besides us. If this inn is really good value for money, there shouldn't be so few people here," Bai Heming said, somewhat puzzled.

Gu Yan nodded, put down his luggage, and sat down at the table. "Brother, you may not know this, but Uncle Chen offended the president of the restaurant and inn association before. He has been suppressed and smeared by other restaurants and inns several times, so things have turned out this way."

"If that's the case, then this inn must have some remarkable qualities to have survived until now," Bai Heming nodded and sighed.

“Maiqiu told me that Uncle Chen used to be a wanderer in the martial arts world when he was young. The inn is able to operate normally now entirely thanks to the help of his friends in the martial arts world.”

After chatting for a few minutes, the two went back to their respective beds to tidy up their belongings. Bai Hongsheng happily carried the wooden box and ran back and forth, sometimes running to the left to watch Gu Yan make the bed, and sometimes running to the right to watch Bai Heming fold clothes.

Before she had run two laps, she heard Mai Qiu's voice from the doorway: "Miss Bai, lunch is ready. Would you and your family like to come downstairs and join us, or should I bring it up to you?"

Gu Yan didn't have a free hand to open the door, so he raised his voice and replied, "Thanks, Mai Qiu, we'll be down in a bit."

After Gu Yan and the other two came downstairs, they saw a sumptuous lunch spread out on the round table in the center of the hall. Uncle Chen sat in the middle seat, with Uncle Peng and Aunt Hong sitting on his left. Mai Qiu stood to the side and waved to Gu Yan: "Miss Bai, please take your seats here with your family."

Gu Yan nodded politely to Mai Dong, then turned to Uncle Chen and asked, "Wow, this is such a feast! Uncle Chen, did you prepare this especially to welcome me?"

"I guess so," Uncle Chen replied ambiguously.

"Looks like I'm still riding on someone else's coattails. Aunt Hong, is today some kind of special day?" Gu Yan asked curiously.

"It's not a special day, but you're here, and Maidong and Xiaowan are coming back today too. It's been a long time since our inn has had this many people, so we thought we'd celebrate a little." Not long after Aunt Hong finished speaking, a hearty male voice was heard from outside.

"Uncle Chen, Uncle Peng, Aunt Hong, we're back! Uncle Chen, look who we've brought back!"

Three figures flashed past the inn's entrance. As Gu Yan turned his gaze towards the doorway, he saw two men and a woman enter one after another. The young man in the lead seemed to be the one who had just spoken; he looked somewhat like Mai Qiu and was likely her younger brother, Mai Dong. The young woman in the middle appeared to be about Gu Yan's age, wearing a purple dress, her long black hair half-tied up, with delicate features and a slight smile on her lightly made-up face. At the very back was a middle-aged man; although his clothes were ordinary, his overall demeanor exuded an aura of authority and sharpness.
