Chapter 16 Poverty Makes People Sad

Money is not everything, but no money is absolutely impossible.

After transmigrating, Gu Yan, the second daughter of the Bai family, the richest family in Wuzhou, never imagined that one day she would also have a headache because of "not having money".

Gu Yan looked at Bai Heming, who was still bedridden and needed rest, and Bai Hongsheng, who was not even as tall as her waist. She felt somewhat melancholy about the future. She figured her money wouldn't last much longer, so after much thought, Gu Yan decided to go out and see if she could find any odd jobs to earn some extra money.

However, reality is quite harsh.

Weaving and embroidery shops were out of the question because of their craftsmanship; dockworkers were out of the question because of their physical strength; and waiters and cashiers at inns and restaurants were out of the question because of their gender. For three days in a row, he was turned away from several shops, leaving Gu Yan feeling a mix of emotions. Back at his lodgings, he had to pretend to be strong and nonchalant in front of his elder brother and Bai Hongsheng.

Oh no, I'm going crazy!

During dinner, Jiang Si noticed that Gu Yan had become somewhat silent lately. He also noticed that her clothes and hair ornaments had changed, and guessed that Gu Yan was short of money. So, taking advantage of Gu Yan's absence again today, he paid Bai Hongsheng the room fee that Gu Yan had paid on the first day and asked him to pass it on to Gu Yan.

Disappointed and empty-handed, Gu Yan looked at the silver coins wrapped in a handkerchief in Bai Hongsheng's hand and was deeply moved, unsure of what to say. But she was currently short of money, so she could only accept them for now and find a proper opportunity to thank Jiang Si later.

However, I don't know if we'll ever have the chance to meet again.

After dinner, Gu Yan handed the prepared herbal medicine to Bai Heming. After watching him finish drinking it, Gu Yan took the bowl and immediately handed him two candied plums.

"Is there something you want to tell me?" Bai Heming asked, looking at Gu Yan who was standing by the bed, looking somewhat uneasy.

Gu Yan hesitated for a moment, then nodded, somewhat reluctant to speak.

Bai Heming almost laughed at Gu Yan's conflicted expression.

"Speak up, what is it? You're not so embarrassed to say it because you're going to sell me off, are you?"

Gu Yan waved his hand in astonishment and quickly denied it, but his voice grew softer and softer as he spoke: "How could that be? Besides, given how sickly you look right now, who would buy it?"

"Hahaha, tell me then, what's the matter?"

"Please wait a moment, brother."

Gu Yan thought for a moment and decided to call Bai Hongsheng over. Although the little boy was young, as Gu Yan's only remaining family member, she still wanted him to participate in making the decision. Gu Yan squatted down and pinched his little cheek, asking softly, "Shengsheng, your second sister has something she wants to ask you and your eldest brother."

Bai Hongsheng tilted his head, looking at Gu Yan with some confusion, then looked at Bai Heming, trying to find some answers.

Bai Heming spread his hands at Bai Hongsheng, looked at him innocently, and shook his head, indicating that he didn't know either.

“Shengsheng, you know that my brother is sick and needs to rest in bed and take medicine to get better. But the inn we are staying at costs one or two taels of silver per night, plus food, medicine for my brother and other expenses, we don’t have much money left, so I was thinking of changing to a cheaper inn?”

Although Bai Hongsheng was young, he knew what it meant to run out of money. He took out a jade pendant from inside his clothes and stuffed it into Gu Yan's hand. "Second sister, Mother once told me that this jade pendant is very valuable. Here, take this. As long as I'm with second sister and eldest brother, I'll stay wherever I want."

Gu Yan touched the cool, smooth jade pendant in her hand, smiled with relief, and tucked it back into Bai Hongsheng's clothes. "You must keep the things your mother told you to keep safe! Don't worry, no matter where your second sister and eldest brother go, they will definitely take you with them."

Bai Heming, who was leaning against the bed, took out a small bag from under the clothes beside his pillow and handed it to Gu Yan: "Why didn't you say you didn't have enough money? This is the silver I carried with me. It's not much, but it will last for a while. I'm almost fully recovered now, and I can stop taking the medicine. We'll do whatever you say about the inn, but we still need to talk to the two young heroes before we leave."

"I didn't expect my brother to be so rich." Gu Yan took the bag, patted it in his hand, and then put it back in Bai Heming's hand.

"It's safer to keep this money with you, brother, and keep it separately. I'll ask you for more when I run out. I already checked out the inn when I went out during the day. It's in a corner in the west. It's a bit remote, but it's quiet and the prices are reasonable. I'll go and say hello to the two young heroes and try to move there tomorrow."

"Okay, you go tell them. Leave the things to me and Shengsheng to pack." After saying that, Bai Heming waved to Bai Hongsheng and called the little boy to his side.

Gu Yan nodded, and after leaving Bai Heming's room, he turned and walked towards Jiang Si's room. Although Jiang Si rarely spoke, Gu Yan preferred to interact with him because of their past "hardships" together, and always felt that he was easier to get along with.

She walked to the door, knocked politely, and entered after hearing "Come in" from inside.

The candlelight flickered inside. Jiang Si sat quietly by the window, leaning against the wall, lazily and casually closing his eyes to rest. Hearing a sound, his thick eyelashes trembled, and he slowly turned his head, his dark eyes fixed on Gu Yan.

Gu Yan was stunned by what she saw and stared straight at Jiang Si. Their eyes met unexpectedly, and Gu Yan quickly looked away, but that one glance made her heart tremble.

Wow, how come I never noticed how handsome Young Master Jiang is before? No, no, wake up, I can't let myself get too caught up in my benefactor's good looks.

"What is it?" Whether it was because Gu Yan avoided his gaze or because she hadn't said a word since entering the room, Jiang Si frowned slightly, his voice carrying a hint of coldness.

"I'm sorry to bother you so late. My elder brother and I are leaving tomorrow, so I came to say goodbye to you and Young Hero Li. Thank you both for taking care of me these past few days."

"Okay, I understand." Even though Jiang Si had many questions, he could only utter these few words.

"Then I won't disturb your rest any longer. Please pass on the message to Young Master Li." Gu Yan had only taken a few steps after turning around when he suddenly remembered something. He quickly turned back, jogged over, placed a small bag of hibiscus cake on the table, and smiled brightly at Jiang Si, explaining, "This is hibiscus cake. I didn't get to try it last time, so you can have some this time." Then he turned and left briskly.

Jiang Si remained seated at the table, intending to continue resting with his eyes closed, but the image of Gu Yan's smile from just moments before kept replaying in his mind. Opening his eyes, he looked at the pristine white hibiscus cake on the table, picked up a piece, took a bite, and chewed it slowly.

"It's really good."

After carefully putting away the rest, she decisively got up and went to find Li Hengzhi.

Li Hengzhi, who was sitting by the lamp reading a book, looked at Jiang Si, who had been staring at him without saying a word since entering the room, and sighed helplessly, "So, what happened this time?"

Jiang Si always reacts this way when he encounters something he can't figure out or understand. He either waits for Li Hengzhi to "answer his questions" or he "digests" it slowly on his own.

"They're leaving," Jiang Si said abruptly.

"Who?" Li Hengzhi didn't react for a moment.

"The Bai siblings."

"Oh, oh." Li Hengzhi suddenly realized, "He Ming's injuries have almost healed, and Wuzhou is a place of sorrow for them. It's only a matter of time before they leave."

"It's not about time."

"what is that?"

"No money."

"What?" Li Hengzhi was momentarily stunned.

"They didn't have much money left when they left the Bai residence."

"So...you mean the reason Heming and the others left was because they didn't have enough money and had no choice but to leave?"

"Young Master Bai is leaving, are you willing to let him go?" Jiang Si did not answer Li Hengzhi, but instead posed his question.

“Of course I’m willing to part with it. Could it be that you’re unwilling? Unwilling to part with whom?” Li Hengzhi put down the book in his hand and looked at Jiang Si with a smile on his lips.

“The situation outside is chaotic right now. Among the three, Young Master Bai is unwell, and Sheng Sheng is still a child. How can Miss Bai, the only woman left, guarantee her own safety?” Jiang Si directly expressed his concerns.

"Does following us guarantee safety? Don't forget the Xuan Yue Sect's kill order. Besides, I trust He Ming, and Miss Bai isn't someone to be trifled with. They'll take good care of themselves."

After listening to Li Hengzhi's answer, Jiang Si pondered for a moment and finally nodded, as if agreeing with his answer.

Li Hengzhi picked up the book that had been lying face down on the table, flipped through a page at random, and reminded her, "You just mentioned money. If Miss Bai doesn't bring it up with you, I suggest you don't bring it up either."

Jiang Si was taken aback for a moment, then suddenly realized, "Okay, I understand."

"This child is teachable. Where do Heming and the others plan to move to after leaving here?" Li Hengzhi asked casually, seemingly with a cheerful expression.

Jiang Si shook his head, indicating that he didn't know either.

"That can't be right. These past few days, you've been secretly protecting Miss Bai by following her around. How could you not know where she's been?" Li Hengzhi glared at Jiang Si, annoyed. He was keeping it a secret from him, even though he had just kindly reminded Jiang Si. He wasn't acting like a brother at all.

"The Four Seasons Inn in the west of the city." Jiang Si said with a sigh, suddenly regretting coming to find Li Hengzhi. He glanced at the person whose attention was focused on the book, left an address, and went straight back to his room to rest.

After Jiang Si left, Li Hengzhi lost interest in reading and simply pushed open the window and went out towards the west of the city.

Where exactly are we going?

What?

Who knows?
