Reborn in a virtual world, before the house was taken away
Chapter 14 The First Meal at the Educated Youth Settlement
Feng Qingqing knew she wouldn't pay it back; there was no IOU or anything when she borrowed it, so there was a high chance she wouldn't get the money back. But she just wanted to annoy her a little, to stop her from constantly showing off her presence. She was really annoyed by her.
The other two watched the whole thing without saying anything. After all, they had vaguely known before that the two families were not very close, and hearing this today confirmed it.
After the three finished making their selections, they went back to wait for Old Mietou's son to return later so he could deliver the items to the educated youth compound.
The group returned together. On the way, Feng Qingqing glanced at Zhuang Shan, who was with them but didn't seem unusual. This girl was actually simple-minded and not a bad person. She only acted too much in front of Qi Hongsheng to try to get his attention. In front of others, she didn't know if she disdained to talk or what, and she spoke very little the whole way. It was basically Hu Fangming who kept chattering.
Having just arrived in the countryside and not yet experienced the busy farming season, I was still very curious about everything.
After the three returned to the educated youth compound, Feng Qingqing went back to her room and saw that her bundle had obviously been tampered with. She glanced around discreetly and found that Jiang Yun had returned and was now sitting on the steps in the courtyard.
Feng Qingqing knew what was going on, so she didn't say anything more. She hammered a nail into the north side of the bed, took out a bed sheet, cut it a few times, and made a curtain. She hung it between her and Hu Fangming so that they would at least have some private space.
Hu Fangming liked it very much when she saw her doing it like that. She also happened to have brought a bed sheet from home, so she simply followed Feng Qingqing's example and made one crookedly as well.
As for Zhuang Shan, she was certainly not short of fabric, so she immediately made one as well.
So when Jiang Yun came back and saw that he was the only one without any, he was dumbfounded. What kind of people were these? They were so extravagant, hanging up cloth as if it were free.
However, there was nothing she could do, as she was the only one without a bag. But since the two people next to her were hanging up, it meant she had her own private space.
Never mind, let's leave it at that for now.
As evening fell, the educated youth who had gone to the fields returned one after another. Since they all knew that several new educated youth had arrived that afternoon, they greeted each other politely when they met.
When it was time to cook, Miao Qiucui and Ma Mingchuan explained to the male and female educated youth how the older educated youth had eaten before.
Everyone took out as much food as they needed each day, and two educated youths were specially assigned to cook for them every day.
So many new educated youths came today; we still need to clarify the issue of meals for them in the future.
Jiang Yun first discussed it with her two older brothers, since none of the three of them knew how to cook, and family members knew each other well. When they came to the countryside, apart from the 200 yuan or so that Jiang Yun had, Jiang Hongwei and Jiang Hongbing didn't have a single penny on them.
Being able to eat with everyone is not only convenient, but at least if there's really nothing left to eat, the other educated youth won't just watch you starve to death.
After the Jiang siblings decided to eat with the veteran educated youth, Qi Hongsheng, who had a good relationship with them, also joined the veteran educated youth group. Of course, Zhuang Shan would definitely follow Qi Hongsheng.
Thus, only Feng Qingqing, Hu Fangming, and Lin Feng remain undecided.
Feng Qingqing didn't speak first because she wanted to eat alone. She turned to look at Lin Feng. He had always been quiet and aloof in his past life, usually keeping to himself. She really couldn't guess his specific situation.
Lin Feng noticed the others looking over, paused, and said:
"I'll eat by myself," she said, and went back inside.
The others exchanged bewildered glances; this person certainly had a personality. Next was Hu Fangming, who was determined to be with Feng Qingqing, so while others looked at her, she stared intently at Feng Qingqing.
Feng Qingqing sighed helplessly, pursed her lips, and opened her mouth:
"I'll eat by myself too." After saying that, she glanced at Hu Fangming, meaning, "I've made the decision; it's up to you to choose."
"I'll eat with Qingqing." Before anyone could say anything, Hu Fangming spoke up, saying he wanted to eat with Feng Qingqing, and then gave Feng Qingqing a flattering smile.
"I knew this would happen," Feng Qingqing thought to herself. "But this girl isn't a bad person, and we've always gotten along well. I'll eat together for a while and observe her before making a decision."
Having a friend to talk to in this youth settlement wasn't a bad thing for Feng Qingqing.
That solved the problem of food.
Next, Miao Qiucui and Ma Mingchuan, representing the veteran educated youth, warmly welcomed the new educated youth. They also stated that tonight was the first meal for the new educated youth at the educated youth compound, and the veteran educated youth would treat them to it. They expressed their hope that, as fellow educated youth, everyone would help each other, work together, and strive for a better life for all educated youth.
With this statement, both the new and old educated youth have made a good start, except for a few with strong personalities.
More than half an hour later, Miao Qiucui and Ma Mingchuan, who were in charge of cooking today, had already put the food on the table.
Although the food was ordinary, it was at least the sentiment of the former educated youth.
On the table was a large bowl of stewed cabbage and radish, some cold wild vegetables, and a plate of stir-fried eggs with chives.
This was considered a rare feast in the youth quarters. The new youths, not wanting to eat for free, each brought some food to add to the meal.
Feng Qingqing brought half a bottle of leftover pickles from before. Although they weren't meat, they were very appetizing and received unanimous praise from both the new and old educated youth.
They ate quickly and quietly, finishing their food in no time.
The previously pleasant atmosphere changed completely during the chat after the meal.
Lü Yulan was the first to speak, and what she said wasn't pleasant at all:
"We're all former educated youth, so we should help each other. But nobody's things come from thin air. We still need to maintain the status quo so that we can get along in the long run. Don't you agree?"
Because her tone wasn't friendly, the older educated youth, knowing her character, didn't argue with her. The newer educated youth, not quite aware of the situation, didn't respond for a moment.
Feng Qingqing knew what Lü Yulan was about to say, and didn't want to get entangled in such trivial matters. It would be better to clear things up so everyone could wash up and go to sleep; it had been a really tiring day.
"We're all new here, so just say what you mean. Your ambiguity makes it impossible for anyone to know what you're implying."
Feng Qingqing retorted without any politeness. She and Lü Yulan had never gotten along in their past lives, and she had no intention of giving her a kind look. Especially Lü Yulan's attitude of "you're all taking advantage of us even if I don't say anything" was truly disgusting.
Hearing a new educated youth being so rude to her, an older educated youth, Lü Yulan's temper flared up, and her voice suddenly rose several octaves:
"Okay, if that's how you put it, then I'll have to make things clear. First of all, the vegetables in the yard were all grown by us old educated youth through hard work, watering and fertilizing them bit by bit. Even though you've just arrived, you can't just eat them for free, can you?"
After she finished speaking, she looked around at the old educated youth. Although they didn't say anything, their expressions showed that they agreed with what Lü Yulan said. After all, it was fine for one or two meals, but they would definitely have complaints in the long run.
After all, if there were no vegetables to eat, they would have to eat cornbread dry or go to a fellow villager's house to buy vegetables. Neither of these was something the older educated youth wanted to experience.
Therefore, after Lü Yulan finished speaking, everyone silently agreed.
"Also, the walls, stove, and cooking utensils in this courtyard were all built by us old educated youth bit by bit and bought with our own money. You can't just use them for free."
After saying this, the older educated youth fell even more silent.
The wall construction only required some labor, so let's not go into that. But putting aside the cost of those two iron pots, the tickets were obtained through connections, and it's understandable that some people felt uncomfortable about letting the new educated youth join in without contributing a single penny.
