Because it was the busy farming season, there was no one in the educated youth compound. Captain Xiong asked a child who was playing nearby to go to the fields and call Miao Qiucui and Ma Mingchuan back.

The group of people waited for the old educated youth to return while observing their surroundings.

The educated youth compound was quite far from the brigade headquarters. It was originally a landlord's house, but it was left vacant because it was not suitable for the team members to live in.

Later, when the educated youth began to go to the countryside, in order to save on the cost of building houses, the production brigade simply arranged for them to be assigned to the educated youth who went to the countryside one after another.

The educated youth compound houses face south. The main building has five rooms in total. The two rooms on the left and right are for male and female educated youth respectively. The middle room is where they eat. Behind the dining table is a stove. When the weather is cold, they would cook in the middle room so that the kang (heated brick bed) in the rooms on the sides would be a little warmer.

Ahead was a large courtyard with neatly divided vegetable plots where seasonal vegetables were being grown. To the left of the door were two stoves where the educated youth would cook in the summer heat.

The courtyard was enclosed by a mud wall about half a person's height. The original brick and tile wall of the landlord's house had long since collapsed. This was built bit by bit by the educated youth themselves, so at least they had some privacy.

The educated youth looked around, but Feng Qingqing knew that there was another courtyard behind the house, and a path leading to the back mountain. Feng Qingqing often walked this path in her previous life. When she was starving, she would go up the mountain alone to find something to eat, and sometimes she could find some wild fruits or persimmons.

And so, in no time, the two educated youths, one male and one female, arrived.

Feng Qingqing looked at the two of them, and they were still the same as she remembered. However, because they had just returned from the fields, their faces were flushed from the sun, and they were covered in sweat. Their lips were also chapped, and they were clearly very hot.

When Captain Xiong saw them returning from afar, he stood up and said loudly:

"Miao and Ma, these people are in your hands now. If you have any problems, come to the brigade headquarters to find me."

As he spoke, he walked towards the team, seemingly impatient to get back and check on the progress of the tasks assigned to each team that day.

Miao Qiucui and Ma Mingchuan welcomed the new educated youth, but they secretly thought that with so many people coming all at once, the educated youth compound would definitely become lively.

The two men warmly carried the group's luggage into the courtyard and gave a brief introduction to the layout and structure of the courtyard.

When it came to arranging the rooms, since there were two rooms each for male and female educated youths, and one room for each of them was empty, the group moved into the empty rooms.

Zhuang Shan grumbled a bit, feeling that it was too crowded for four people to share a room, but in the end she had no choice but to move in anyway.

The room for the female educated youth was quite spacious, with a window on the south side and a long kang (heated brick bed) on the north side, which looked like it could easily sleep seven or eight people.

Feng Qingqing quickly chose a spot against the east wall, where it was still warm in winter because it was close to the stove. Jiang Yun saw her move and was about to step forward to reserve the spot next to Feng Qingqing when Hu Fangming, who was holding Feng Qingqing's hand, beat her to it.

Seeing this, Jiang Yun's face turned pale with anger, but she still patiently and politely spoke to Hu Fangming:

"Hu Zhiqing, look, I'd like to sit closer to my cousin. Can we switch seats?"

“I also want to be with Feng Zhiqing. Wouldn’t it be the same if you slept next to me? We’re in the same room anyway, it’s just a matter of a word. Besides, I really like this spot, I won’t move no matter who comes.” After saying that, she started tidying up her spot on the kang (heated brick bed).

"How could you do this?" Jiang Yun stood there angrily for a long time, but no one paid any attention to her, so she could only pack her luggage in a huff.

Feng Qingqing didn't care about any of this, but she was happy to be able to get away from Jiang Yun, that troublemaker, a little.

The kang (a heated brick bed) was covered in a layer of dust because no one had lived there for a long time. Feng Qingqing took out a rag she had prepared beforehand from her large bundle, and also took out two basins. She then carried one of the basins out to fetch water.

After she cleaned up the kang (heated brick bed) where she slept, she lent the rag to Hu Fangming, who had been eagerly waiting to use it. The little girl smiled sweetly at her as soon as she took the rag.

After the group finished cleaning and tidying up, Feng Qingqing said to everyone:

"I'm planning to go to the team's headquarters to see if there's any place where I can exchange wooden crates. Do you want to come along?"

The group all chimed in, saying they wanted to go. Although Jiang Yun was careful with her money and didn't want to spend it recklessly, she looked around the house and figured she needed to buy a box or a small cabinet to store some household items.

Feng Qingqing was very familiar with this place where she had lived for several years in her previous life. But in order not to show it, she gave a child a piece of candy and asked where the carpenter's house was.

When I arrived at the carpenter's house, I saw an old man in his fifties sitting on the steps smoking a pipe. He was dirty and his legs were covered in mud, so he looked like he had just come back from working in the fields.

Feng Qingqing knew the carpenter was called Old Bamboo Head. His wife had passed away years ago, and he currently lived with his only son and his family. Because of their skill and the work points they earned in the fields, Old Bamboo Head's family was one of the better-off families in the village.

Since there were ready-made products in the yard, the group picked and chose a few items each.

Feng Qingqing chose a large camphor wood chest. This chest was actually just a cover; she would keep her truly valuable things in her spatial storage space, as there was no safer place than her spatial storage space.

I only bought a wooden basin and a bamboo basket.

Jiang Yun looked at the things Feng Qingqing had bought, but considering that she didn't have much money and also had to take care of her two older brothers, she didn't dare to spend too much.

Thinking that his two older brothers had nothing yet, he opened his mouth and said to Feng Qingqing:

"Sister Qingqing, look at Second Brother and Third Brother, how about we buy some for them and bring them back?" He looked at Feng Qingqing with hopeful eyes.

"Jiang Yun, you need to get this straight. They are your own brothers, not mine. If you want to buy them, you should buy them yourself, not come to me. Besides, aren't their rural subsidies with you?"

Feng Qingqing looked at her with a completely bewildered expression.

"But, but... I have other uses for my money. You brought so much stuff, you probably won't need much money. We're sisters who grew up together, can you not be so calculating? They are, after all, your brothers."

Jiang Yun looked like she was about to cry. She really didn't want to spend her own money, and she had already resorted to emotional appeals. In her opinion, if Feng Qingqing could buy some things for her brothers this time, perhaps their relationship could be restored to its previous level.

Jiang Yun is genuinely panicked. Although she has always been jealous and envious of Feng Qingqing's life and the privileges of being an only child, she still gets some benefits from getting along well with her. But recently, not only have she not gotten any benefits, Feng Qingqing has been keeping her at arm's length, which makes her feel very threatened.

“Jiang Yun, let’s calculate how many good things you’ve eaten at my house since you were a child, how many of my clothes you’ve worn, and when you’re going to pay me back the 120 yuan you’ve borrowed from me on and off. I didn’t ask you for it before because we’re cousins; but what did you mean just now? Are you saying I don’t care about our family ties? Well, I’ll have to disregard that this once and see.”

After saying that, she stared straight at Jiang Yun, who felt flustered and confused. She didn't know that she had borrowed so much money from her, but there was no way she could pay it back.

She held on with all her might:

"Sister Qingqing, are you really going to be so heartless?" After saying that, she ran out without taking her things.
