Dapeng's Time Travel Life

Chapter 62 Unpredictable Events and Fate Intertwined

The border winds and sandstorms persisted, each grain of sand carrying the chill of battle, relentlessly lashing the weathered faces of the soldiers. Zhang Peng stood atop the watchtower, his brow furrowed as he gazed at the distant, menacing camps of the foreign forces. Although the tribes had been temporarily appeased for days, the problem of food supplies remained a thorn in their side, threatening to plunge them into dire straits at any moment.

"General, latest intelligence: foreign forces are assembling an elite force, seemingly planning to bypass the frontal defenses and launch a surprise attack from the flank." Li Ming rushed over, his expression grave, the intelligence report in his hand rustling in the wind and sand.

Zhang Peng took the intelligence report, his eyes quickly scanning it as he pondered. Although there were flanking defenses, their strength was relatively weak; if they were breached, the consequences would be unimaginable. "Pass down the order: deploy archers and spearmen to reinforce the flanking defenses, and at the same time, lay traps along their only route. We absolutely cannot let them succeed."

After making the arrangements, Zhang Peng decided to personally inspect the flank defense line. When he arrived, the soldiers were busily working, moving boulders and digging trenches. Just then, a commotion arose in the crowd, and a woman was seen being escorted by soldiers.

"General, this woman is acting suspiciously. She's been lurking around the area like she's spying on us." The soldier pushed the woman in front of Zhang Peng.

Zhang Peng sized up the woman before him. She had a beautiful face, but her eyes held a hint of stubbornness and mystery. The woman looked back at Zhang Peng without fear, a slight smile playing on her lips. "My name is Lin Wan'er, and I'm here to help you," the woman suddenly said, her voice clear yet enigmatic.

"Help us?" Zhang Peng sneered. "What can a weak woman like you do to help us? Are you perhaps a spy sent by foreign forces, trying to pull some tricks?"

Lin Wan'er remained calm and took out a jade pendant from her bosom. It was engraved with strange patterns and shimmered faintly in the sunlight. "This is a token of my family. My family has guarded a secret for generations, which is closely related to this war. Now, the time has come, and I have come to tell the general this secret."

Zhang Peng's heart stirred. He took the jade pendant and examined it carefully. Although he couldn't understand the patterns on it, he vaguely sensed that the jade pendant was extraordinary. "What is the secret you mentioned?"

Lin Wan'er looked around and gestured for Zhang Peng to dismiss everyone. After everyone had left, she leaned close to Zhang Peng and whispered, "Underground at the border, there is an ancient ruin containing powerful weapons and mysterious forces. If we can find it and make use of it, it will surely help the general defeat the enemy."

Zhang Peng was shocked; the news was too much to bear. "Why are you helping me? And how do you know all this?"

A complex emotion flashed in Lin Wan'er's eyes, "Because... this is my destiny, and it's yours too."

Zhang Peng wanted to press further, but then he saw Lin Wan'er suddenly turn pale and spit out a mouthful of blood. Trembling, she pulled a small bottle from her bosom and handed it to Zhang Peng: "This is... the antidote, which can cure the poison inflicted on the soldiers in the army..." Before she could finish speaking, she collapsed to the ground.

Zhang Peng quickly helped her up, only to find that she had already stopped breathing. He was filled with doubt; Lin Wan'er's appearance had been too sudden, and her death was shrouded in mystery. But at this moment, he had no time to think further and could only ensure her body was properly disposed of.

Back at camp, Zhang Peng summoned his generals to discuss countermeasures. The men were skeptical of Lin Wan'er's words, but in this desperate situation, no glimmer of hope could be lost. Ultimately, Zhang Peng decided to send men to search for the ancient ruins while simultaneously strengthening defenses to prevent foreign forces from taking advantage of the situation.

In the days that followed, the soldiers' search for the ruins yielded nothing, while the attacks from foreign forces intensified. The situation at the border grew increasingly critical, and the morale of the soldiers waned under the immense pressure.

Just when Zhang Peng was feeling desperate, a soldier accidentally discovered a stone slab with strange symbols engraved on it while digging a trap. Upon learning this, Zhang Peng immediately rushed to the scene. He carefully examined the symbols on the stone slab and a sense of familiarity welled up in his heart. Wasn't this the pattern on Lin Wan'er's jade pendant?

He realized that this might be the key to finding the ruins. So, he led his soldiers, following the symbols, on a difficult search. Little did he know that as they approached the ruins, the fated entanglement between him and Lin Wan'er would gradually surface, and all of this would become the prelude to his journey into the world of cultivation.
