Dapeng's Time Travel Life

Chapter 60 The Fierce Battle Before Dawn

The night was as black as ink, so thick it seemed impossible to dispel. The border remained silent in the darkness, broken only by the occasional footsteps of patrolling soldiers. Zhang Peng stood alone on the city wall, gazing at the scattered campfires of the enemy camp in the distance, his heart filled with worry. Tomorrow's battle would be a life-or-death struggle; every detail would determine the outcome of the war, and even more so, the survival of the people on the border.

"General, the soldiers are all ready and waiting for your command." Li Ming's voice was exceptionally clear in the quiet night.

Zhang Peng nodded slightly, his gaze still fixed on the enemy camp: "Tell everyone to hold on for one more night. Tomorrow's battle is a fight to the death, with only victory allowed, no defeat."

Li Ming turned and left to relay the general's orders. Zhang Peng watched his retreating figure and sighed inwardly. This war had been fraught with difficulties from the very beginning, and now that it had reached its most critical moment, he dared not slacken his efforts in the slightest.

As dawn broke and the first light appeared on the horizon, the enemy's bugle calls suddenly rang out. Zhang Peng turned abruptly and shouted, "Prepare for battle!"

In an instant, the soldiers on the city wall sprang into action, each taking their positions. Archers drew their bows taut, their eyes fixed intently ahead; swordsmen gripped their weapons tightly, muscles taut, ready to strike; beside the catapults, soldiers nervously adjusted their angles, preparing to deliver a fatal blow to the enemy.

The enemy troops surged forward like a tidal wave, their shouts deafening, as if trying to engulf the small border town. Leading the charge were the enemy's elite cavalry, clad in heavy armor and wielding long spears, charging forward like black lightning.

"Release the arrows!" Zhang Peng commanded, and a volley of arrows rained down on the enemy cavalry. However, the enemy cavalry were well-trained; they quickly raised their shields, forming a defensive formation to withstand the arrow attack.

Next, the enemy's siege equipment appeared. Huge battering rams, pushed by the soldiers, pounded heavily against the city gate, each impact producing a dull thud, as if the gate would be breached at any moment. Soldiers on the city walls continuously hurled logs and stones down, attempting to halt the enemy's advance.

"General, the enemy's offensive is too fierce, and the city gate may not be able to hold!" a soldier shouted anxiously.

Zhang Peng frowned, knowing he had to find a way to turn the tide. Suddenly, an idea struck him, and he said to his adjutant beside him, "Order the beacon towers to be lit and proceed according to plan!"

The deputy general accepted the order and left. A short while later, the beacon towers at the border were lit, thick smoke billowing into the sky. This beacon fire was not only a signal to the imperial court for aid, but also an order to attack the troops lying in ambush in the valley.

Meanwhile, Zhang Peng led an elite force, opened the city gates, and launched a preemptive attack. Holding a long spear, he charged ahead into the enemy ranks. Encouraged, the soldiers' morale soared, and they followed their general in fierce battle.

On the battlefield, shouts of battle shook the heavens, and the clash of weapons was deafening. Zhang Peng, as if possessed by a war god, wielded his spear with ferocious power, and wherever he went, enemy soldiers fell. However, the enemy outnumbered them, and they quickly surrounded Zhang Peng and his men.

"General, we are surrounded!" Li Ming shouted.

Zhang Peng remained calm. He looked around and spotted a slight opening in the northeast corner of the enemy's encirclement. "Follow me! Break out from the northeast corner!"

Zhang Peng took the lead, charging towards the northeast corner with his soldiers. They fought fiercely and finally broke through the enemy's encirclement. Just then, shouts of battle came from the valley; it turned out that the ambushers lying in wait had launched their attack.

The enemy was attacked from both sides and their formation was thrown into chaos. Seeing this, Zhang Peng was overjoyed: "The enemy is in disarray! Launch a full-scale counterattack!"

The soldiers launched a fierce attack on the enemy like tigers descending a mountain. Under the valiant fighting of Zhang Peng and his men, the enemy finally could not withstand the onslaught and began a complete rout.

Zhang Peng watched the retreating enemy army, but felt no joy. He knew this victory was only temporary, and the foreign forces would not let it go easily. But he firmly believed that as long as he and his soldiers were united, they would be able to protect this land and safeguard peace on the border.
