Dapeng's Time Travel Life

Chapter 48 Night Raid and Peril Amidst Four Dangers

The moonlight, like water, spilled across the desolate Gobi Desert. Zhang Peng led his elite troops, moving stealthily like ghosts. All around was deathly silent, save for the occasional whistling wind and the soldiers' soft footsteps. Everyone held their breath, their nerves taut, gripping their weapons tightly, ready to respond to any unexpected situation.

"General, the enemy's catapult position is five miles ahead. According to reconnaissance, it is heavily defended and guarded by a large number of troops." A scout quietly approached and reported to Zhang Peng in a low voice.

Zhang Peng nodded slightly, his gaze piercing through the night, looking into the distance, trying to catch a trace of the enemy. "Pass down the order: slow down, remain vigilant, and do not make a sound."

The troops continued their advance, and gradually, the outline of the enemy camp emerged in the night. Huge catapults, like ferocious beasts, were neatly arranged, surrounded by densely packed tents and patrolling soldiers.

"General, the enemy's defenses are indeed very strong. What should we do?" the adjutant beside him asked softly.

Zhang Peng pondered for a moment and said, "A frontal assault is definitely not going to work. We'll try to outflank them and find a weak point in their defenses."

The troops advanced cautiously along the flank of the camp. Suddenly, a slight noise came from ahead, and everyone immediately stopped and lay prone on the ground. It turned out to be two enemy patrolmen, slowly walking towards them.

Zhang Peng gave a wink to the soldier beside him, and the two of them silently approached the patrolmen. Before they could react, they quickly covered their mouths and dragged them aside.

Having dealt with the patrol, the troops continued their advance. Finally, they found a spot where the enemy's defenses were relatively weak. Only a few sentries were on duty, and the surrounding tents were sparsely distributed.

"This is it, prepare to attack!" Zhang Peng ordered in a low voice.

The soldiers leaped up like tigers, swiftly charging towards the enemy camp. Before the sentries could even raise the alarm, they were dealt with. Immediately afterwards, the soldiers set fire to the surrounding tents; flames soared into the sky, and shouts of battle filled the air.

The enemy camp was thrown into chaos instantly, with soldiers pouring out of their tents in an attempt to organize a resistance. However, they were caught off guard by the sudden attack and their formation crumbled.

Zhang Peng led his soldiers towards the catapult positions. They advanced with unstoppable momentum, engaging the enemy in fierce combat. However, the enemy quickly recovered and began to organize a counterattack. An elite force rapidly closed in on them, attempting to encircle them.

"General, enemy reinforcements have arrived! We're surrounded!" a soldier shouted anxiously.

Zhang Peng remained calm. He looked around and spotted a slight opening in the northeast corner of the enemy's encirclement. "Follow me! Break out from the northeast corner!"

Zhang Peng took the lead, charging towards the northeast corner with his soldiers. They fought fiercely and finally broke through the enemy's encirclement. However, before they could even catch their breath, another enemy force pursued them from the rear.

"General, this can't go on. We need to think of a way to escape," the lieutenant said.

Zhang Peng, watching the enemy troops relentlessly pursuing him, inwardly groaned. Just then, he suddenly spotted a dense forest ahead. "Enter the forest and use the terrain to our advantage!"

The troops quickly rushed into the woods, and the enemy followed. However, the complex terrain of the woods greatly restricted the enemy's movements. Zhang Peng led his soldiers, using the trees for cover, and engaged in a fierce guerrilla war with the enemy. They would sometimes launch surprise attacks from the flanks, and sometimes set traps, making it difficult for the enemy to defend against them.

After a fierce battle, the enemy was finally driven back. Zhang Peng led his soldiers and broke out from the other side of the woods. By this time, they were exhausted, but no one complained.

"General, shall we continue searching for catapult positions?" a soldier asked.

Zhang Peng gazed into the distance, his heart filled with resentment. But he knew that the troops were already exhausted, and continuing deeper into enemy territory would only lead to greater danger. "Let's retreat first, and then we can discuss this further back at a more comprehensive time."

Under the cover of night, the troops quietly withdrew back to the border. Looking at the border walls behind him, Zhang Peng secretly vowed to find and destroy the enemy's catapult positions.
