Dapeng's Time Travel Life
Chapter 47 The Choice Before the Storm
The wind howled across the border, as if preluding a great battle to come. Zhang Peng stood on the newly repaired city wall, gazing at the winding valleys and dense forests in the distance, filled with their meticulously laid traps and fortifications. But his brow remained furrowed. Although supplies had been replenished, he still harbored unease about the powerful enemy army equipped with new weapons.
"General, the soldiers in each battalion have completed their final training, and the protective equipment has been distributed to every city defense point." Li Ming quickly walked up the city wall and reported to Zhang Peng.
Zhang Peng nodded slightly, but his gaze remained fixed on the distance: "The enemy could attack at any moment, so we must be absolutely certain of our safety. Pass down the order to keep the soldiers vigilant, take turns on duty, and not slacken their guard in the slightest."
Li Ming accepted the order and left. Zhang Peng paced alone on the city wall, pondering a countermeasure. The power of the giant catapults was beyond imagination; could the existing fortifications really withstand them? Suddenly, a bold idea flashed through his mind—to launch a preemptive strike.
Once the idea took hold, it took root in his mind. Rather than passively waiting for the enemy to destroy the city walls with new weapons, it would be better to actively seek out the enemy's catapult positions and destroy them in their infancy. However, this operation was also fraught with risks; venturing deep into enemy territory, a slight misstep could lead to being surrounded.
Zhang Peng returned to his tent and summoned his generals. The generals sat around the tent, their expressions varied, and a tense atmosphere permeated every corner.
"I've gathered you all here today to discuss something," Zhang Peng said slowly, his gaze sweeping over everyone. "I plan to take the initiative and destroy their giant catapults before they can complete their deployment."
These words immediately caused an uproar in the camp.
“General, this is too risky! The enemy must be prepared. If we go deep into enemy territory and get surrounded, the consequences will be unimaginable!” A general was the first to object.
“But if we passively defend and wait for the enemy’s catapults to launch an attack, our city walls may not be able to withstand it,” another general countered.
The crowd argued back and forth, each offering their own perspective. Zhang Peng listened quietly, weighing the pros and cons in his mind. Taking the initiative to attack was risky, but it might be the only way to break the deadlock; passive defense was relatively safe, but once the city walls were breached, the border would be in imminent danger.
“General, whatever decision you make, I will support you!” Li Ming suddenly stood up and said firmly.
Looking at Li Ming, Zhang Peng felt a surge of warmth in his heart. He glanced around and saw the trust and expectation in the eyes of the generals, and finally made up his mind.
"Gentlemen, my mind is made up. Taking the initiative is risky, but it's worth a try. We cannot sit idly by and wait for our doom; we must seize the initiative in this war." Zhang Peng's voice was firm and powerful.
The camp gradually quieted down, and the generals nodded in agreement to obey orders. Zhang Peng began to deploy the action plan in detail: "We will divide our forces into three groups. One group will launch a feigned attack from the front to attract the enemy's main force; another group will flank the enemy from the side to harass their rear; and the last group, which I will personally lead, will find and destroy the enemy's catapult positions."
The generals accepted their orders and went to make their preparations. Zhang Peng personally selected an elite force, whose soldiers were all agile and experienced, and were the force he trusted most.
Before setting off, Zhang Peng approached the soldiers, looking at their young yet resolute faces, his heart filled with emotion. "Brothers," he said, "this journey is fraught with peril, but we bear the heavy responsibility of defending the border and protecting the people. No matter what difficulties we encounter, we must forge ahead!"
The soldiers shouted in unison, "Charge forward! Defend the border!" Their voices resounded through the sky, filled with fearless fighting spirit.
Night fell, and the border was silent. Zhang Peng led his elite troops, quietly leaving the camp and heading towards the enemy. Moonlight shone on them, illuminating their resolute figures. They knew that a fierce battle might await them, but for the peace of the nation and the happiness of the people, they were determined to go.
As the troops gradually disappeared into the night, Li Ming stood on the border wall, gazing in the direction they had gone, silently praying. He knew that Zhang Peng was carrying the hopes of everyone on his shoulders; the outcome of this war might depend on their actions.
