Colorful years

Chapter 13 Ancestral Home: Hongdu

The legendary story of her great-grandfather Zhang Xiangsong is like a seed containing boundless hope, deeply rooted in Congcong's tender heart.

This seed of hope gradually took root and sprouted in his young heart, inspiring him to cherish his dreams, face difficulties without fear, and forge ahead to pursue his own future.

Grandpa's face was beaming with a warm smile, and his eyes shone with love and tenderness. He held Congcong's small, tender hands tightly, as if he wanted to pass on the warmth and strength passed down through generations of his family to him without reservation.

The grandfather and grandson strolled leisurely through every corner of the Zhang family courtyard, each step imbued with deep longing and endless remembrance for the past.

They walked slowly along the ancient stone path, weathered by time, their footsteps crisp and melodious, yet powerful and resonant, as if they had traveled through a time tunnel back to the distant past.

Grandpa's voice was deep and magnetic as he recounted the history of the Zhang family, allowing Congcong to deeply feel the family's profound heritage and the spirit passed down through generations.

It turns out that the Zhang family were not originally from this land; their roots were in Hongdu, Jiangxi, which is now Nanchang.

More than three hundred years ago, the Qing army entered the pass and pacified the Central Plains. After that, they marched south with the intention of unifying the country. As a loyal minister of the Ming Dynasty, my ancestor Zhang Mogong witnessed the devastation of the country and was heartbroken.

At the same time, fearing the encirclement and suppression by the Qing army's iron cavalry, he resolutely led his family away from their familiar homeland and embarked on a long and arduous migration.

After overcoming numerous hardships and trials, they finally arrived in the mysterious and unfamiliar mountains of northwestern Hunan and began a new life.

Here, they worked hard, multiplied and thrived, gradually taking root in this land and building their own home.

Despite weathering many storms, the Zhang family has always maintained a spirit of perseverance and self-reliance, which has been passed down from generation to generation.

One day, Zhang Mogong accidentally discovered a desolate and remote valley with few people. When he stepped into this magical land, he was immediately shocked by the scene before him.

In this small basin surrounded by mountains, spider plants grow in abundance, their flowers blooming in vibrant colors and emitting a refreshing fragrance. White cranes occasionally soar by and perch here, adding a touch of ethereal beauty to the entire valley.

Zhang Mogong's heart stirred; he felt that this place had excellent feng shui and was an ideal place for a secluded life. After careful investigation and comparison, he finally selected a spot in the middle, with a tall chestnut tree behind and a towering osmanthus tree in front, as the perfect place to build his house.

Because he had brought a considerable amount of silver with him, Zhang Mogong hired skilled craftsmen from the surrounding villages to help with the construction. After half a year of hard work, a large courtyard capable of accommodating a hundred people was finally completed.

This residence boasts a beautiful environment and a layout that embodies the concept of harmony between man and nature. It features typical characteristics of Qing Dynasty residential courtyards and complements the surrounding natural landscape, resembling a fairyland on earth.

From then on, Zhang Mogong led his family to start a new life here. They cleared land and farmed, the men tilling the fields and the women weaving, living a self-sufficient, peaceful, and harmonious rural life. Although their lives were simple and unpretentious, they were filled with happiness and contentment.

Of course, for Zhang Mogong, opening a private school and teaching children to read and write was of paramount importance. He deeply understood the power of knowledge and hoped that through education, the next generation could better face the future and benefit society.

This way of life, which combines farming and scholarship, has been passed down through generations in the Zhang family and has become a fine tradition passed down through the ages.

Time flies, and more than a hundred years have passed in the blink of an eye. The Zhang family's descendants have multiplied rapidly, and the entire clan now has more than a hundred members.

The original ancestral home could no longer meet the housing needs of so many people, so the collateral branches of the family were separated and set up their own households in various parts of Yongding, continuing to carry on the family's fine traditions.

The direct descendants remained in the old house, guarding the family's honor and heritage.

This leisurely and peaceful life was passed down for nine generations. In this generation, a prodigy emerged—Zhang Xiangsong. His intelligence and memory were simply extraordinary, leaving people in awe.

When he was just a three-year-old child, he could recite the Three Character Classic and the Expanded Collection of Wise Sayings without missing a single word; by the age of seven, he had already read through the Four Books and Five Classics and other Confucian classics; at the age of twelve, he won first place in the provincial examination and became a Xiucai (a successful candidate in the county-level imperial examination); and at the age of eighteen, he passed the imperial examination in the capital and became a Jinshi (a successful candidate in the highest level of the imperial examination), thus embarking on his official career.

After Zhang Xiangsong took office, he carried out a large-scale renovation and expansion of the Zhang Family Compound. The compound is surrounded and protected by towering firewalls, with gray walls and blue tiles complementing each other. The overall structure is made of brick and wood, with wood as the main material, presenting a typical Jiangnan residential style.

On either side of the main gate of the compound stands a towering stake, its imposing presence conveying a sense of solemnity and authority. The interior of the compound is meticulously planned and laid out according to functions such as dining, living, entertainment, recreation, and scenic views, resulting in a remarkably refined and elegant structure.

In addition to more than fifty spacious and bright houses, the family also has a courtyard, workshops, gardens and other supporting facilities, which all demonstrate the family's prosperity and wealth.

At that time in Yongding County, such a large compound was unparalleled in scale and was truly breathtaking.

Congcong stared intently at the scene before him, while listening attentively to his grandfather's heartfelt and moving narration. A strong sense of curiosity and longing welled up within him, as if he were in a mysterious and captivating world…
