Huh? There's a magic school here.
Chapter 99 Final Exams (Part 2)
"Next up, Benhard Wiggins of Hufflepuff!"
Professor Flitwick began admitting three-year students.
Bernhard was initially in a relaxed state of mind, but when he entered the examination room and saw the other students looking at him with amusement, he felt a pang of unease. He wondered to himself, "Did I wash my face before leaving home at noon? Why are they looking at me like that?"
Professor Flitwick had great confidence in Bernhard, whom he was personally tutoring, which is why he chose him as the first candidate. He wanted Bernhard to set an example for the children in the audience.
Professor Flitwick cleared a small area with a wave of his wand, allowing Bernhard to stand in the center. He then cast a protective spell, enveloping Bernhard in a transparent dome. Professor Flitwick then spoke to Bernhard.
"Some small animals will suddenly appear around you. Your task is to defeat them with the Petrify Spell! You have two minutes. The more you defeat, the higher your score. Understand?"
"Understood, Professor Flitwick. I think I'm ready. Let's begin!"
"Alright, let the exam begin!"
Then, the first small animal appeared inside the enclosure where Bernhard was.
The first little animal was a golden retriever. This silly golden retriever was wagging its tail at Bernhard without trying to hide! Bernhard easily petrified it with a Petrify Charm, then the golden retriever disappeared, and other dogs began to appear in the enclosure, only getting smaller and smaller.
When Bernhard knocked down the tenth one, it was no longer a dog, but various smaller and more agile cats of different breeds. Compared to dogs, felines are much harder to hit as they leap and bound. Fortunately, Bernhard reacted quickly enough and had enough magic.
Just after Bernhard's Petrify the Tenth Cat, even smaller mice emerged from the dome. Although Bernhard still had enough magic, his reaction speed couldn't keep up.
The mice were too small and ran very fast. Hitting each mouse required a lot of luck with spells, and by the time the time was up, Bernhard had only hit three mice.
Two minutes may seem short, but it was incredibly exhausting for Bernhard. During those two minutes, he had to constantly turn around, run, and cast spells, requiring intense mental concentration. Just as Bernhard was resting inside the dome, Professor Flitwick's voice woke him.
"Alright, Benhard! Stop spacing out in the enclosure, come here! You did a good job, young man, here's a chocolate frog as a reward, go rest over there."
Bernhard, holding the candy, walked in the direction Professor Flitwick was pointing, where a group of young wizards were buzzing with discussion.
Among them was a young Hufflepuff wizard who was familiar with Bernhard, who asked in a low voice.
"Prefect, how's it going? The rats in the back are really hard to hit!"
"It's alright, it's just a bit tiring after casting so many spells."
He said it lightly, but in his heart he was thinking, "What else? My arms are about to smoke from swinging them around!"
Then they heard Professor Flitwick shout.
"Next up, Sharon Dempsey of Hufflepuff."
Then the Hufflepuff prefects walked in, and Bernhard stopped talking and went into "spectator mode," wanting to see how his companion would react.
Sharon Dempsey began the same test, but she was clearly not as quick as Bernhard. Although she also got to the part where she tried to hit the mice, it took her longer, and she only managed to hit one mouse.
Then she came to Bernhard's side with the same chocolate frog in her hand.
"Benhard, how are your grades?"
"Not bad, you hit two more rats than me."
"They're so small, yet they run so fast! How did you manage to hit them? I was just incredibly lucky to hit one!"
"I had to unleash a lot of spells to hit him! Shh, be quiet! Harken's coming in!"
Halken Miller was clearly much stronger than Sharon Dempsey. He used fewer time with the dogs and cats in front of him, giving the mice more time to react, and hit three more mice than Sharon Dempsey.
Later, Slytherin Prefect Arianuel Morrison, much like Sharon Dempsey, struggled to hit a single rat despite her frantic efforts.
Next up were Gryffindor prefects Calema Molina and Joanna Hampton. While their performances were similar to the others, Joanna's scores were better than Calema's, thanks to her love of sports and greater agility.
Finally, the Ravenclaw prefects made their appearance! Prefect Ricardo Geese and Prefect Melissa Carlson performed quite well; they even received applause from the young Ravenclaw wizards as they walked back to the student lounge, indicating they are generally well-liked.
Then the last two began their final exams! First to enter was Diane Bryan, the student council president. This academic genius, with her magical aura, was indeed different from the other prefects. She astutely spotted a loophole in Professor Flitwick's exam rules: Professor Flitwick only stated that the spell used to hit the target was the Petrify Charm, but didn't mention that other spells were forbidden during the exam.
So when the exam began, Diane didn't rush to cast a spell to hit the target. Instead, she released two spells inside the dome, dividing the space inside into four sections with fire, and standing in one of those sections herself.
Her actions caught the attention of the other students in the rest area, and discussions ensued.
"Wow, the female chairperson is amazing! How did she come up with that? She compressed the small animals' movement space, making it easier to hit the target!"
"Yes, yes, no wonder she became the president of the female student council, she's got a sharp mind!"
Meanwhile, the prefects of the four houses were dumbfounded, realizing that they had been misled by their conventional thinking. They thought that the professor's suggestion to use Petrify All to hit the target was the only spell they could use, but now it seemed that they were just inflexible!
Joanna muttered to herself.
"Damn it, how come I didn't think of that! I always thought I was the smartest person, how come I was so confused during the exam!"
While feeling resentful, he didn't forget to subtly pinch Benhard with his hand to vent his anger.
Bernhard was caught in the crossfire; he was in a lot of pain, but because there were so many people around, he dared not utter a sound and could only silently endure the violence from his girlfriend.
Quickly, in less than two minutes, Diane finished the test, hitting all thirty small animals. This was something Professor Flitwick hadn't expected; he hadn't thought of using this method to improve efficiency. However, since it hadn't been mentioned before the test, he could only accept the result. This is an example of "what is not prohibited is permitted."
