Huh? There's a magic school here.
Chapter 97 Final Exam (Part 1)
Although the young wizards were very reluctant, the final exams still arrived. On the morning of Children's Day, June 1st, all the young wizards gathered in a study room, waiting for the professor to arrive.
The classroom had been redecorated by the house-elf Dobby the day before. Unlike the usual side-by-side arrangement, the desks were now separated, each a meter apart. Quill pens and ink, provided by the school, were also placed on the desks.
The young wizards were whispering among themselves, especially the younger ones who were a little nervous. The older wizards, having seen many exams before, were more concerned about whether they could get an excellent score.
As the young wizards waited anxiously, the clock struck nine in the morning. With a bang, the examination hall doors opened. A small figure carrying three scrolls of parchment walked in, and all the students' eyes followed him to the podium.
"Daris, are all the students here?"
"Yes, Professor Flitwick! Everyone is here!"
"Very good, before the exam. Let me briefly say a few more words. The exam is only to check everyone's learning outcomes; whether you do well or poorly is not the most important thing. What matters is whether your character is up to standard! Cheating is not allowed in school. If someone is found cheating, their grade for that subject will be a T, meaning they fail and will have to retake it next year. If they still cannot pass the retake and get an A, then they will have to repeat the course. If the number of courses requiring retakes exceeds half of the courses studied that year, then unfortunately, you will have to repeat the year."
I hope none of you will have to repeat a year. Of course, if your cheating skills are good enough to fool me, that's fine too! The school is still democratic and will respect everyone's opinions.
No sooner had he finished speaking than the young wizards below the stage began to whisper among themselves.
"Damn it, if I could fool Professor Flitwick, would I need to sit here taking the exam? I should be sitting up there proctoring!"
"Flazzi, then you'll probably never have the chance to sit in it in your lifetime!"
"Oh, Jordan, you idiot, shut up!"
Seeing that the murmurs below showed no sign of stopping, Professor Flitwick could only cough twice.
"Please be quiet now, everyone, and get ready to begin the exam."
So Professor Flitwick picked up his wand and began to cast a spell on the three parchment exam papers on the table.
"Copy in pairs!"
The number of exam papers began to increase rapidly, but their quantities were different; they were stacked separately according to the content of the three-year, five-year, and seven-year programs.
Then Flitwick waved his wand, casting a group levitation charm that sent all the exam papers flying into the air before settling on the desks in the exam hall. Although the young wizards had already learned these two simple spells, seeing Professor Flitwick execute these two group spells so effortlessly still made them realize the vast difference between themselves and the professor!
There is a fundamental difference between learning something and learning it well!
"Alright, the exam will now begin. You have one hour! If anyone finishes first, they can hand in their paper and leave the exam room! But remember not to disturb the other students."
So the young wizards opened their exam papers and began to write furiously.
For a top student like Diane, who is shrouded in the aura of magical genius, the first few questions were complete free points.
For example, in the first question, what is the essence of the curse?
Diane found it hard to believe—it was so simple? So she quickly wrote down the answers on the test paper.
"The essence of a spell is the magical act of mobilizing magical power in the magical world to achieve a certain effect."
Then I started on the next questions. Actually, in Professor Flitwick's three exams, the easy questions at the beginning are all the same, because these are all basic questions. The main difference lies in the subjective questions at the end!
The final subjective question tested the seven-year wizards' familiarity with a certain spell, requiring them to write down the casting process, the hand gestures, and the incantation.
The last subjective question for fifth graders required them to explain the origin and historical evolution of the spell, building upon their knowledge from seventh graders.
The three-year program is the most difficult. It requires students to build upon the five-year program by adding their personal understanding of the spell, providing examples of similar or related spells, and sharing their insights on that type of spell.
These are no problem for top students, because they have already memorized this knowledge. Just like the professors said before the review, the final exam is a summary of the knowledge learned this semester, and as long as you study hard and take notes in class, you can basically pass.
As for some food-loving but academically challenged students, they would furrow their brows and occasionally glance at other classmates when answering questions.
Fortunately, they were all wise enough not to cheat. Without cheating, there was still a chance of passing, but cheating would definitely result in failure.
About forty minutes passed, and Diane glanced at her exam paper with satisfaction. She felt it was about right; getting an O shouldn't be a problem. So Diane was the first to stand up, picked up her exam paper, and placed it on Professor Flitwick's desk.
Professor Flitwick nodded with satisfaction at his disciple. He knew Diane's usual level of magic and performance, so he let her leave without saying anything.
After Diane left, she went back to the Ravenclaw common room to rest, as she still needed to prepare for her upcoming exams. She hoped to get O's in all four of her exams to add more points for Ravenclaw, and thinking about this, she felt sorry that Herbalism and Flying courses didn't have final exams.
Herbalism Professor Sprout believed that this semester was not a complete academic year, so she did not organize a final exam. Instead, she graded everyone's performance in planting herbs together. As for flying, she believed it was just a skill, and once mastered, there was no need for an exam.
In the examination hall, Darius and the prefects from all the houses watched as Diane handed in her paper and left. Their quills flew even faster as they wrote. They all wanted to get an O, especially the two Slytherin prefects; they had no idea whether the time taken to submit the paper was also a factor in the exam's evaluation.
Soon enough, the student council president, Darius, also handed in his paper and left! Then came the prefects from various colleges. Since the other prefects had all handed in their papers and left early, wouldn't it seem incompetent to sit there for a full hour? So where did the papers come from? That's how they came about!
The other young wizards weren't as diligent as the ten of them; they mostly handed in their papers when Professor Flitwick called for a break.
"Alright, children, time's up. Put down your pens, get up and leave the classroom. I'll collect your papers."
Then the young wizards put down their pens and left the examination hall with their companions. Outside the examination hall, one could still faintly hear people complaining.
"Annil, did you do the last big question?"
"Fabio, don't talk nonsense, of course I wrote it! What's wrong? Didn't you write it?"
“I wrote it, but only half of it, because I couldn’t remember the answer for a moment. By the time I remembered, it was almost time to stop. When Professor Flitwick called for me to stop writing, I still had a small section left unfinished.”
