Rebirth in Another World: The Ultimate Legend

Chapter 161 The Cursed Town (Part 1)

They quickened their pace, as if drawn by an invisible force, rushing eagerly towards the town. With each step they took closer, the faint anticipation in their hearts grew stronger, like a burning flame that burned ever brighter.

Finally, they arrived at the town entrance. However, the scene before them took them by surprise—it was deserted and lifeless, without a trace of human activity. The entire town resembled a sleeping giant, its stillness almost frightening.

"Why is this town so quiet? Something's definitely not right!" Lin Yu frowned and muttered to himself in a low voice. The mysterious man beside him paused slightly, his eyes scanning the surroundings warily, and whispered a reminder: "Be careful. This place probably hides some secrets, and there might be some danger waiting for us."

The two cautiously stepped into the town, only to find that the doors and windows of the houses on both sides of the street were tightly shut, as if each door concealed a secret. Those closed doors and windows were like silent mouths, refusing to reveal any information to the outside world.

Suddenly, a cold, damp wind howled past, swirling up the withered yellow leaves scattered on the ground. Lin Yu couldn't help but shiver and shudder. "This wind is so strange..." he said, unconsciously shrinking his neck.

Just then, a creaking sound rang out, and the door of a room slowly opened. A hunched old man stepped out, his steps faltering as if burdened by a heavy load. His face was shrouded in shadow, obscuring his features, but his hoarse voice clearly reached everyone's ears: "You shouldn't have come here..."

Seeing this, Lin Yu quickly stepped forward and respectfully asked, "Old man, why do you say that? What exactly happened to this town?" In response to Lin Yu's question, the old man simply shook his head and sighed, "This is a cursed place. Anyone who enters here will find it incredibly difficult to leave..."

The mysterious man's gaze was fixed on the old man before him, and he asked in a solemn tone, "If that's the case, then why are you still lingering in this place?"

Upon hearing this, the old man sighed deeply, as if the sigh contained the vicissitudes and helplessness of his entire life. He slowly said, "Alas... I am now at my wit's end. The world is so vast, yet there is no place for me to stay. So I can only wait here for death to come."

Hearing these words, Lin Yu, who was standing to the side, felt an indescribable pity welling up in his heart. At the same time, he exchanged a glance with the mysterious man, and they both saw deep doubt in each other's eyes.

Just then, a deep, resonant bell tolled from the center of the town. The sound, like muffled thunder, echoed through the silent air, sending a shiver down one's spine.

The old man's face turned deathly pale instantly. His eyes widened in terror, and his lips trembled as he exclaimed, "Oh no! It's coming!"

Seeing this, Lin Yu hurriedly asked, "Who is coming?" However, the old man had no time to answer his question. As if driven by an invisible force of fear, the old man suddenly turned around, staggered back into the house, and slammed the door shut as fast as he could.

Looking at the tightly closed door, Lin Yu and the mysterious man exchanged bewildered glances, unsure of what to do. But after only a moment, they nodded in unison, determined to head to the town center together to unveil the mystery hidden behind the bell's tolling and find out what had caused the old man such panic.
