Boonie Bears: Another World Fantasy
Chapter 53 The Eye of the Storm (Part 1)
Xiao Junyao realized that Karl had known her true identity all along and had been secretly gathering information about her. What shocked her even more was that he had somehow obtained this incredibly precious photograph. This was a faded old photograph, carrying so many memories and emotions...
Perhaps it was because of that deep-seated, inseparable attachment in her heart that Xiao Junyao firmly believed that the photo had long been lost in some corner of time, and no matter how hard she searched for it, she had never succeeded. However, at this moment, when it suddenly appeared before her eyes, all her efforts seemed to have become meaningless.
Xiao Junyao knew she didn't belong to this world. Hidden within this was a little-known, captivating story. Her gaze involuntarily lingered on the figure on the left side of the photograph, as if piercing through the river of time to see a face that was once familiar yet now foreign.
The people in the photo, though ordinary as dust, were all soldiers of unwavering integrity, ultimately unable to escape the ravages of time and the arrangements of fate. Now, they have all passed away, leaving only this photograph as a testament to that glorious era.
“Thank you for bringing him to my side, Butler Carl.” Her heart was filled with turbulent emotions, and she was unable to calm down. She couldn’t even tell whether doing this was a blessing or a curse for her.
“It’s hard to believe you actually exist.” Karl’s lips curled into a barely perceptible smile, then he subtly used the word “you.” The deeper meaning behind this simple word was something they both understood perfectly well.
Xiao Junyao took a deep breath and continued, "History and ancient texts are not necessarily true and reliable. Just like those imitation ancient artifacts, they don't have much practical significance and cannot truly reflect what happened in the past." After speaking, she slowly got up, walked lightly to the office window, and quietly gazed at the bright moon that was rising slowly in the night sky.
“How could someone as intelligent as Miss Xiao be so easily caught red-handed?” Karl was puzzled by what Xiao Junyao was currently doing and expressed disbelief. “The chairman probably holds some important leverage that could force you to submit and work for him, right?”
She gave a bitter and helpless smile.
“For my sister…” She gazed silently at the endless stream of cars on the street, her lips parting slightly as she murmured. “I have a sister, but we were forced apart, so he promised to help me find her…”
"So you've been working for him all this time?"
“Yes…” She raised her hands, as if she could see the blood that couldn’t be washed away. “I had no other choice.”
......
"Butler Carl, please keep this a secret for me—" Xiao Junyao said solemnly. The conversation, which had lasted for more than an hour, had already exhausted her, and now that her disguise had been exposed, her sense of crisis had risen to its peak in such a short time.
This housekeeper is a truly terrifying person. She realized with a start that she had completely underestimated An Han, utterly disregarding her. She had always thought of An Han as nothing more than an inexperienced, fledgling child. However, it now seemed that she had been terribly wrong.
She knew all too well that if her true identity were revealed, the consequences would be unimaginable. Not only would this place descend into chaos, but the entire world could be turned upside down. Having been here for so long, this was the first time Xiao Junyao had felt such anxiety and fear.
"Of course, no problem," the old butler replied easily.
He knew in his heart that the deterrent effect had been achieved, and there was no need to use it to threaten her further. Karl did not want things to escalate to the point where force was necessary; after all, violence would only bring more harm and trouble, not a real solution.
In this complex world, sometimes remaining calm and restrained is the wisest choice.
"Give my regards to Miss An." She stood at the door, leaned forward slightly, stepped over the not-too-high threshold, and said, her gaze falling on Karl.
Carl turned around: "I will certainly pass on your greetings."
Xiao Junyao nodded slightly. However, at this moment, Karl added, "Ms. Xiao, if you encounter any trouble in your life or work, or need any help, please feel free to come to me. Don't hesitate to do so."
"must......"
Xiao Junyao watched Karl's retreating figure, a complex mix of emotions welling up inside her. The silvery moonlight spilled onto the street, elongating Karl's shadow. His steps appeared exceptionally firm and steady, as if nothing in the world could hinder the butler's progress.
......
"What? Someone has found out your real identity?" Yu Lian exclaimed in surprise on the other end of the phone, unable to believe the news he was hearing.
At that very moment, Xiao Junyao stood in her office, gripping her phone tightly, her expression grave as she spoke to Yu Lian: "Yes, it was Karl... He somehow got his hands on that photo..."
Xiao Junyao's voice betrayed a hint of helplessness; this sudden turn of events had caught her somewhat off guard. Yu Lian, on the other end of the phone, fell into deep thought, realizing that this butler, whose seniority even surpassed his own, might possess more crucial intelligence.
"That photo... it's been so long, didn't I tell you to burn it?" Yu Lian asked tentatively, a hint of doubt and dissatisfaction in his eyes.
Xiao Junyao sighed softly, her voice tinged with self-reproach: "It's my fault. I had some selfish motives back then... but I really couldn't bear to destroy it."
Yu Lian's brows furrowed even more, and his tone became serious: "Karl exposed your identity only to deter your next move. He's helping An Han break the stalemate she's in. You should be well aware of that."
Xiao Junyao asked, almost in a pleading tone, "Then... what should I do?"
He scolded, "What's wrong with you lately, Naling? You never used to ask questions like this." Yu Lian's sigh revealed disappointment. "Now you even have to ask me what you should do? Have you forgotten? If it weren't for your mercy back then, An Han would be dead long ago, and wouldn't have the strength to challenge me now!"
His words struck Xiao Junyao's heart like a heavy hammer. Yu Lian's demonic nature was now clearly revealed.
“A perfect opportunity will not come twice. As you have seen, she has already begun to take action against Zixing, and you have been dragged into it as well.”
Xiao Junyao listened quietly, and after a moment of silence, she slowly said, "The planned car accident didn't work out as expected... We thought they would all die on the spot, but An Han survived..."
She recalled that time, An Han's battered body and the look in her eyes—filled with confusion, anger, and distortion. Yet, at that moment, she couldn't recognize her true self hidden behind the mask.
Xiao Junyao's earnest explanation had no positive effect; instead, it only made Yu Lian even angrier.
“Don’t you think I should have found someone else to do this?” he prompted slowly and clearly, each word carrying a heavy weight. “Or perhaps you don’t want to see your sister? She hasn’t been doing well lately…”
"I didn't..." Xiao Junyao bit her lower lip tightly. She knew that this old man was ruthless and would never easily tolerate anyone who was inefficient.
His patience seemed to have reached its limit.
"Yu Lian... I'm begging you, please tell me where she is... even just a general location would be fine." Xiao Junyao's voice trembled; she had never pleaded with anyone so humbly before. But to ensure her sister's safety, she was willing to abandon all her pride.
“I will, but not now.” Yu Lian coldly and ruthlessly rejected her. He seemed completely unconcerned about the request. “Don’t worry, your sister is currently under our surveillance, nothing unexpected will happen.”
A wave of despair washed over Xiao Junyao. She knew all too well that Yu Lian's threats were not empty words. Once, she was the person Yu Lian valued most. But now, she had become the very thing she least wanted to be—a pitiful, powerless person, completely manipulated and threatened.
"Please give me a little more time... as long as you can ensure her safety..." Xiao Junyao's words were almost a plea, her voice filled with deep helplessness and pain.
However, Yu Lian on the other end of the phone remained unmoved: "Don't complicate this matter too much, Na Ling. If you really want to know where your sister is, come see me next time with An Han's head."
……
At the foot of White Bear Mountain, a simple outpost and temporary shelter for the wounded stands in the cold wind.
A helicopter hovered in the sky, its fuselage swaying precariously, as if it might be blown over at any moment by the fierce winds. The pilot nervously maneuvered the aircraft, trying to stabilize it before landing on the snow-covered helipad.
A tense atmosphere filled the cabin. Wei, sitting in the front seat, stared grimly at the white expanse outside the window. Although he was covered in dust, he looked considerably better than his disheveled companions.
"Still haven't found Dr. Su Luo?" Wei's voice came coldly, with a hint of barely perceptible anxiety. His gaze swept over the people around him, finally settling on the steward.
The head housekeeper trembled slightly. She lowered her head, her voice becoming unusually cautious: "Not yet... Boss."
Wei frowned, a hint of displeasure flashing in his eyes. He slammed his hand on the armrest of his seat, making a dull thud. A chill ran through the entire cabin; no one dared to utter a sound.
“If anything happens to Dr. Su, all our efforts will have been in vain. All our hard work will have been for nothing…”
Wei was extremely anxious, cold sweat pouring down his forehead. Without waiting for the plane to come to a complete stop, he jumped off without hesitation and strode towards the soldiers distributing emergency supplies, shouting at the top of his lungs:
"Hey! You over there! Where's the rescue team behind us? Have they caught up yet?" His voice echoed across the open space.
"The wind and snow are interfering too much! There's no way to contact them at all!" came the desperate and helpless reply from the crowd.
No, this is definitely not the ending he hoped to see.
He had already sacrificed two entire outposts and countless manpower for this investigation. Yet, in the end, it was all for naught; he gained nothing. Those so-called conventional weapons were utterly useless against that white monster, completely ineffective…
Wei stared wide-eyed at the scene before him. Stretchers carried wave after wave of severely wounded soldiers; the ground was covered in blood-soaked bandages, a sea of red; severed limbs lay scattered everywhere, a gruesome sight. Some had already frozen to death, their bodies stiff and faces pale; others were charred beyond recognition.
He slumped helplessly onto an empty wooden crate, his body and mind utterly exhausted. He didn't know how much longer he could hold on, or how long this damned duel would last.
