Boonie Bears: Another World Fantasy
Chapter 44 Blizzard (Part 2)
"Where is Dr. Su?!"
Wei stood on the temporary helipad of the outpost, the roar of helicopter engines behind him almost drowning out his shout.
"The flow of people is just too huge, Ms. V! We can't get in touch with her at all!" the supervisor said anxiously, her hand holding the phone trembling slightly as it was bombarded with calls. At this moment, multiple transportation routes within the outpost were paralyzed, with only air routes still struggling to stay afloat, becoming the last hope for the people here to escape safely.
"We can't wait any longer, we have to take off immediately! We need to get out of here before the blizzard hits!" The pilot anxiously leaned out and shouted to the two men. They could feel the air surging violently beneath their feet, as if a powerful force was sucking away the surrounding cold air. And in the distance, it seemed as if a giant exhaust fan was running frantically, desperately devouring the frigid air from the area.
Just then, "she" suddenly stood up. Her enormous body made the once vast lake appear tiny, like a small pond. With a powerful swing of her thick forelimbs, "she" easily swept a weather tower used for observation to the ground. Then, "she" fixed her gaze on the core research area, where many people had clearly not yet successfully evacuated.
Wei secretly estimated that at least several dozen people were still trapped inside the weather tower, their fate unknown. At the same time, several military fighter jets streaked overhead like lightning, leaving long trails of flame as they charged headlong into the raging beast.
"Thunderbolt One, immediately use missiles to draw its attention! Adjust the flight altitude flexibly according to the actual situation, and use lasers to mark the precise impact point!"
"Understood, sir! There is only one target for this attack. Two wingmen will launch the attack from the left and right flanks respectively."
At a command, the entire crew quickly and orderly dispersed. In an instant, flames erupted from the bellies of the three fighter jets, and four missiles, like staggered lightning bolts, hurtled straight toward "her" neck.
With the military already involved, could they minimize the damage to the outpost? Wei stared intently at the unstoppable advance of "her," his heart filled with resentment. After all, an outpost had already been destroyed, bringing his hatred for "her" to its peak.
“We’ll see!” Wei said through gritted teeth.
......
As the four missiles struck their targets with deadly accuracy, the resulting explosions produced flames that resembled blooming flowers. Surprisingly, however, these fireballs seemed to cause no harm whatsoever to the attackers. Instead, "she" let out a deafening roar, as if demonstrating against the attackers.
Immediately afterward, her left forelimb lashed out with the ease of swatting a fly, instantly shooting down an oncoming fighter jet. In a flash, sparks flew, illuminating the night sky and brightening the previously dark environment. And within the narrow passage, the desperate cries of people filled the air.
"Xiao Luo! We can't get over there!" When Su Luo saw the bear-like behemoth, over sixty meters tall, slowly moving in their direction, her last hope vanished, and she had to abandon her plan to head to the shelter. At the same time, the other two fighter jets made an emergency turn around in mid-air, preparing to launch another targeted attack.
However, the continuous missile bombardment not only failed to halt "her" advance but also thoroughly enraged this behemoth. A dazzling light suddenly erupted from between "her" massive purple antlers, and a chilling ray swept across the narrow passage. The fighter jets struck by the ray lost control, spun several times in the air, and then plummeted straight to the entrance of the shelter, only a few dozen meters away from Su Luo and the others.
The wreckage resembled a giant fireball, flames licking the air, and splattering oil triggered an even more violent explosion. Countless fragments flew in all directions like shrapnel, mercilessly blocking the escape routes of the remaining personnel.
This was undoubtedly a devastating disaster... Fear gripped everyone's hearts, and the survivors desperately tried to escape this horrific place as quickly as possible. However, just as everyone was in a panic, Su Luo made an unexpected move—she actually took a few steps forward.
The raging flames reflected in her eyes, as if drawn by a mysterious force. She stared intently at the sea of fire, seemingly pondering something important.
"The instruments and weapons here... they must all be shut down!" Su Luo suddenly shouted, his tone resolute. "Otherwise, it will never stop attacking!"
Xiao Luo, who was assisting in treating the wounded, looked utterly bewildered upon hearing this. In such a critical and dangerous situation, who had the mind to think about such things? Everyone was only thinking about how to survive and escape!
"Doctor, what does this mean?" Xiao Luo asked anxiously, but Su Luo did not answer his question immediately.
“We must find a way to make it understand that we pose no threat to it. Didn’t you see? Its attacks didn’t happen for no reason!” Su Luo’s eyes gleamed, as if he had found the key to solving the problem.
"The communication lines are all down! We can't get in touch with anyone at a higher level!" He anxiously pulled out his phone and tried to dial the number again and again, but each time it was in vain.
"No, we can't just sit here and wait to die!" Su Luo made a decisive decision without hesitation. "Let's go, there's no time to waste, we're going to the control center!"
Before he finished speaking, Su Luo quickly took off running like an arrow in the exact opposite direction from the escape route.
"Go now?!" Xiao Luo was stunned, not even having time to consider whether this was the best option, because Su Luo had already made a resolute decision.
"This doctor is always such a worry!" He groaned inwardly, but dared not slacken his pace and hurriedly followed behind, fearing that Su Luo might encounter misfortune or do something dangerous again to risk his life.
Along the way, the two stared wide-eyed at what was happening before them: rows of self-propelled artillery pieces on the ground, their muzzles pointed at the sky, were constantly firing powerful shells at "her," but these shells bounced off or exploded as if hitting a rock with an egg, without causing any real damage to her.
She used that ability again—a beam of incredibly destructive force shot out from between her horns. The beam of light was like a sword of death, instantly freezing everything in its path, from sturdy buildings to vibrant life, into thick layers of ice, which then rapidly shattered and collapsed in a very short time...
"What on earth is that thing?! It can't even be killed by artillery shells..." Xiao Luo exclaimed in astonishment. Although they had tried their best to avoid the affected area, the rapidly dropping temperature acted like an invisible barrier, making it difficult for them to move.
"Why is it so cold?" Su Luo frowned, rubbing her hands incessantly as she spoke, her voice trembling. However, her cheeks, red from the cold, cruelly revealed that her efforts were in vain.
She lifted a broken steel pipe from the vicinity, wedged it into the middle of the frozen sensor door, and pried it open with all her might.
"Xiao Luo, come help me!" Su Luo shouted.
Behind this incredibly heavy door lies a shortcut to the control center. This passage was originally used by the logistics department for handling and storing miscellaneous items, and was rarely used. However, at this moment, it had become crucial.
"Doctor, this is a heavy-duty door! We need a jack!" Xiao Luo shouted breathlessly. Despite their best efforts, the exceptionally sturdy heavy-duty door remained as firm as a mountain and did not budge.
Sweat streamed down their foreheads, mingling with the tense atmosphere. Faced with this seemingly insurmountable obstacle, the two were extremely anxious.
A disheveled squad of soldiers, seemingly fresh from a fierce battle, rushed over through the biting, icy fog. When they saw Su Luo and the others so close to the attack zone, the squad leader, frantic with worry, immediately ran forward, waving his arms anxiously to signal them to retreat immediately.
"Hey! Hey! Why are you still here?! Get out of here, or you'll all freeze to death!" He impatiently and irritably shooed away Su Luo, who was trying to ask for help.
Undeterred, Su Luo gripped the captain's sleeve tightly and pleaded earnestly, "Sir, please order your men to stop this aimless bombing! This won't solve the problem at all, and it will never stop!"
"It sees you as a threat!"
However, the hot-blooded young army commander did not take her words to heart. Instead, he waved his hand indifferently, signaling several soldiers to come forward and forcibly drag Su Luo away.
"Threat? Hmph! Just a few dozen kilometers to the south is Bear Ridge, where tens of thousands of innocent people live. Are you just going to stand by and watch the monster break into the residential area and harm those people who are fast asleep?" The captain asked angrily, his eyes wide open.
"You can't be so extreme!" Su Luo's face was full of anger as she tried her best to break free from the soldiers' iron grip on her hands, but all of this was in vain—she was like a helpless chick, easily lifted up and carried away by those strong soldiers. "Let me go! Listen to me, we must immediately shut down all the equipment that is still running here, otherwise, none of us will survive!"
As the blizzard approached and brought extreme cold, Xiao Luo and Su Luo had no choice but to board the tracked vehicle that was already parked nearby, a vehicle specifically designed for transporting supplies and personnel in snowy conditions. Together with the other soldiers responsible for searching for the remaining survivors, they embarked on their evacuation journey.
"You're lucky to have met us, ma'am. That monster's attack almost destroyed the entire underground shelter." With the roar of the vehicle's engine, the not-so-likable captain nimbly jumped into the vehicle, the last to reach the back seat, and settled comfortably next to Su Luo. His face was covered by a thick tactical mask, revealing only a pair of sharp, hawk-like eyes that were rapidly and carefully scanning everyone inside the vehicle.
The man's dismissive attitude towards her words instinctively stirred a sense of disgust and aversion in Su Luo, but out of politeness and gratitude towards the rescuer, she restrained herself from lashing out. She simply glared at him fiercely before silently shifting her body to the side, maintaining a safe distance from the captain.
Seemingly sensing Su Luo's deliberate action, the captain didn't mind and instead took the initiative to ask, "Are you Dr. Su Luo?" His voice was deep and magnetic.
Su Luo's eyes widened, and she was secretly surprised: "How did he know?" Only then did she realize that the other person's gaze had never left the research institute identification badge hanging on her chest from beginning to end.
Feeling uncomfortable being stared at like that, Su Luo instinctively reached out and took off the nameplate, her movements somewhat flustered and awkward. Then, as if trying to hide something, she quickly stuffed the nameplate into her pocket.
"Yes, that's me." She clearly didn't want to continue the conversation.
“What you just said isn’t that I don’t want to believe it, but that I’m afraid to gamble with so many people.” He sighed softly, gently leaning the gun he was holding against the side of the corridor, and explained to the other person in a low voice. “Last time that thing appeared, we already suffered a great loss, so this time, no matter what, we must try our best to save as many people as possible.”
"Last time? So...you've dealt with that monster more than once before?" However, in response to her question, the man simply shook his head with a wry smile, without giving a direct answer.
"I'm sorry, Dr. Su, I can't go on about this matter any further." His voice was filled with helplessness and bitterness, as if he had something difficult to say. After saying this, he silently turned his head, his gaze fixed on the snow-capped mountains illuminated by flames in the distance, as if he were lost in thought.
“I see…” she murmured to herself. The tracked vehicle shook violently, recklessly breaking through the barbed wire used for isolation, heading straight for the last area of the outpost—the mining area. From behind the vehicle came intermittent low roars and muffled booms from aircraft bombing.
The people on the bus looked dazed, their gazes unfocused, as if they were all trying to shift their attention elsewhere, attempting to forget the psychological trauma inflicted by the heavy blow they had just suffered. Exhaustion was etched on everyone's face, as if their souls had been ripped from their bodies.
"Captain! There's been an accident at the mine!" Suddenly, the driver's terrified shout shattered the deathly silence around them like a thunderclap. Upon hearing the sound, the man sitting next to him immediately stood up without hesitation, moving with the agility of a cheetah, and rushed towards the driver's seat.
The so-called mining area is the huge cave that Su Luo saw when he first arrived here, connecting to the depths of the earth. According to Wei, they had excavated the ancient remains of the deer tribe at a depth of 400 meters underground and preserved them intact to this day.
Through the incredibly sturdy bulletproof glass, one could clearly see that the windproof dome that had once covered the massive hole to protect it from the fierce winds had now been smashed open, leaving a shockingly large breach. Flames soared into the sky, thick smoke billowed, and eerie golden lights flickered intermittently, sending chills down the spine. It was as if some mysterious and terrifying force was erupting from the dark depths of the earth…
"The circuits here are all broken..." Darkness enveloped the surroundings, like an endless abyss that instilled fear.
"What about the search and rescue team ahead? Have you made contact with them?" someone asked anxiously.
After parking the tracked vehicle steadily outside the mine, the man frowned and pondered for a moment. Then he turned to look at Su Luo and the others inside the vehicle and said in a serious tone, "You all stay in the vehicle and don't move around. I'll take a few people to check the situation nearby."
However, at that moment, an unexpected sound rang out.
"No, I want to go with you!" It was Su Luo who spoke, her gaze firm and resolute, showing no sign of backing down.
Standing to the side, Xiao Luo looked troubled and pitifully gestured with her eyes for Su Luo to stop following them around, but Su Luo ignored her and resolutely got out of the car.
"I need to find out what secrets V Group is hiding here. Is there another monster here?" She bit her lip.
“Your assistant seems very reluctant for you to move around freely, Dr. Su.” The man took a step forward, firmly blocking her path, his posture and movements clearly revealing his unwavering stance. “In the event of any dangerous situation, never expect these firearms in our hands to be of any use.”
“There’s absolutely no need for that.” Facing the man’s obstruction, she met his gaze without backing down. Just then, someone nearby gently nudged the man with the butt of their gun and whispered, “Stop talking nonsense, Salta. By the time that thing catches up, we’ll all be dead.”
After overhearing the man's name by chance, Su Luo became even more curious about his face, which was tightly covered by a tactical mask.
"Fine, do as you please." Salta ignored the stubborn Sulo and strode towards the dome after lowering his goggles.
“Let’s catch up, Luo.” She wrapped her coat tighter around herself and silently followed at the back of the group. And just like that, the relationship between the two plummeted to a freezing point once again.
The blizzard, like a raging beast, continued to howl, its strong winds like sharp knives, relentlessly scraping the ground, seemingly unwilling to let go of anyone who dared to challenge it.
