Boonie Bears: Another World Fantasy
Chapter 43 Blizzard (Part 1)
at the same time.
Southern part of Baixiong Mountain, V Group's geological sampling outpost.
Under the same sky, the rocket soaring high into the clouds, its dazzling exhaust flame also appearing in Su Luo's deep eyes. Looking out through the thick tempered glass, the snowflakes falling outside the room resembled willow catkins dancing in the wind, appearing tranquil and beautiful, without any danger. However, only those who have truly experienced it can understand that that peace and tranquility is merely a disguise hidden beneath a gentle facade.
Perhaps for Su Luo, this word is the most appropriate to describe the genius Wei.
"Doctor, it's been almost a week... They're clearly using various methods to imprison you!" The assistant brought over a steaming cup of coffee on time as usual, while also complaining indignantly on her behalf, "Because you refused to hand over the right to use the Skyfire, they've kept you locked up here!"
Compared to her somewhat agitated assistant, Su Luo herself appeared much calmer. She calmly took the still steaming mug from her assistant and gently placed it on the desk beside her.
"Xiao Luo, think about it. They not only prepared a comfortable place for me, but also generously provided a full range of free research equipment and instruments, and even waived all the cost of my three meals a day. Being taken care of like this—I'm almost reluctant to leave." Su Luo said half-jokingly.
"Doctor, how can you still laugh..." The male assistant, who had been interning for less than a month, clearly didn't understand the humor and seemed a little anxious.
"Don't be so anxious, they can't do anything to me." Su Luo waved his hand, indicating that the other party didn't need to worry too much.
"What about the institute? The committee just called and said that the funds used for research and reorganization of Tianhuo have been seriously over budget. If they are not transferred soon, our institute will have to close down and be dissolved."
"Transfer? Transfer it to where? Wrap it up as a gift and send it away?" As if he had already seen through his intentions, Su Luo, who had just taken a sip of coffee, spoke firmly. "Everyone knows the destructive power of the Heavenly Fire. The technology it contains is thousands of years ahead of our time. If it is used in the military field... the consequences are unimaginable."
"But hiding like this isn't a solution," he said, seemingly overly concerned.
"Xiao Luo, I've never seen you so worried before. Do you perhaps think I'm not competent enough as the director?" Her words were loaded with meaning; though she didn't say it directly, the implication was self-evident.
"Doctor, how could I dare..." He quickly denied it, as if afraid of losing this hard-won job.
Su Luo crossed his arms, a meaningful smile playing on his lips.
“The Heavenly Fire was brought back by our research institute after going through countless hardships, not to mention that it came from…” At this point, Su Luo suddenly sighed heavily, seemingly hesitating whether to tell him the truth.
The fierce battle aimed at restoring order and correcting the spatial distortions originated from that place. Moreover, there were many other things that shocked him. Su Luo remained tight-lipped about these matters. The terrifying "L Sun"—the enormous black hole that appeared above Deep City—was a gift from the Time Devourer, whose mere wave of its power caused this catastrophe that shocked the world.
After weighing the pros and cons repeatedly, she finally decided to keep this secret buried deep in her heart.
"Never mind, forget I said anything," Su Luo murmured softly.
"Huh?" The assistant was quite surprised to hear this. Although he already sensed that she was hiding some secrets, he ultimately decided against pressing her for more information. After all, he was just a small helper; interfering too much might only cause resentment.
So the assistant said softly, "Then you should get some rest, Doctor. If you need any help, just let me know." After saying this, he turned to leave.
“Yes, of course.” She nodded in agreement.
As her assistant stepped out of the room, Su Luo slowly picked up the mug on the table and gently sipped the remaining coffee. Instantly, the room fell silent, the only sound the soft ticking of the clock on the wall echoing through the air.
However, at that very moment, a small, extremely well-hidden camera located diagonally across the room quietly began to operate. The constantly flashing indicator light above it seemed unusually eerie.
In fact, Su Luo had already noticed the camera on her very first day at the hotel. She also knew what these people were up to. She casually raised her cup towards the camera, as if to tell those secretly watching her: no matter what tricks you try, I am fearless.
"This is unbelievable!"
In the control center specifically used to operate these closed-circuit cameras, the number one eavesdropper angrily slammed his headset to the ground, glaring at Su Luo, who was mocking him below the monitor, his face full of frustration. He grumbled, "Why is it so difficult to get any useful information out of this woman? Maybe the boss should just hold a knife to her throat and interrogate her!"
“Don’t talk nonsense! If the boss hears you, you’ll be spending the night with the brown bears here!” In comparison, the second eavesdropper was obviously more cautious, but even so, he still failed to obtain any valuable information from Su Luo.
"Let's observe for another two days. After all, she's a very important person to the boss," Number Two said calmly.
"She's already 'toasted' us, yet she's still pretending not to notice anything amiss?" Number One looked helpless, picked up his headphones from the table again, and continued to grumble incessantly.
How long is this damn job going to last?
......
Facing the dimly lit and silent office, Wei stood as still as a statue, gazing at the only source of light in the space—the fish tank in the corner. He stared intently at the goldfish swimming within, completely absorbed, captivated by their elegant and graceful movements.
In Wei's eyes, at this very moment, a massive net, meticulously planned and personally laid by him, was quietly unfolding, waiting for the perfect opportunity to slowly tighten. The prey about to fall into the trap remained completely unaware, utterly unprepared. Unfortunately, due to the mountain of work piling up at the Shenzhen headquarters, he was simply unable to be present to witness this thrilling capture operation targeting "her."
Whenever he thought of this, Wei couldn't help but sigh inwardly. He had gone to great lengths to track down even the slightest trace of "her." Not only had he specially established a secret outpost on the remote White Bear Mountain, but he had also continuously and comprehensively monitored the local climate change, never letting up for a moment, regardless of the season.
Sometimes, in order to successfully attract "her" attention, Wei would risk sending logging teams into the deep forests to cut down trees on a large scale, and even dropping powerful geological pulse bombs from helicopters near White Bear Mountain. By creating strong shockwaves, he would send a special "signal" to "her".
As for why the term "she" is used... the reason is actually quite simple. On those obscure, low-credibility, third-rate fake news websites, without exception, all those claiming to have witnessed this mysterious creature choose to refer to her as "she." Perhaps it's because some of this unknown creature's physical characteristics are more female. But the truth can only be known by actually seeing "her" in person. The local residents firmly believe in the existence of the "Snow Woman," revering her as the mountain goddess of Mount Shirokuma, regarding her as a deity.
Gods? Hahaha!
Wei couldn't help but burst into laughter, as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world. After so many years of scientific research, he had long since become disdainful of so-called gods. In his eyes, those ethereal beliefs were nothing more than a form of self-comfort for people facing the unknown and fear.
Recalling his arrival, Wei was filled with conviction and determination. However, just two months after they established their outpost, a sudden attack shattered the peace. The mysterious being known as the "Snow Woman" displayed astonishing power. The blizzards she unleashed as she moved engulfed the entire evacuation airfield. Rays of light, nearly -100 degrees Celsius, emanating from her purple diagonal, leveled all the buildings… This disaster far exceeded everyone's expectations and made Wei realize the immense difficulty of the exploration mission.
A mountain god who can control the weather at will... capturing him alive is harder than climbing to heaven!
A faint but persistent tremor traveled along the ground and through the fish tank into the water. The goldfish were terrified; they frantically pounded against the tank walls, trying to escape this glass cage that bound them to their freedom.
The outpost's alarm blared, its sound echoing throughout the office. In an instant, crimson emergency lights filled every corner, as if a blood-red moon were slowly rising.
Wei looked out the window warily and found that the sun had quietly sunk below the horizon, and the surroundings were dark, which gave him the creeps.
"Level One Attack Alert! Level One Attack Alert! All personnel are to immediately evacuate to the underground shelter!"
A cacophony of hurried footsteps sounded outside the door, which was then violently flung open. The supervisor, his face contorted with panic and breathless, appeared before Wei.
“Manager V, let’s go! ‘She’ is here!” The supervisor’s voice trembled, filled with fear and despair.
"Damn it... why did they have to come at this time!" he said through gritted teeth, his eyes bulging as if they were about to pop out of their sockets. The veins on his forehead and neck bulged out with rage, like ferocious earthworms.
……
"Rumble--"
With a deafening roar, the mug on the table suddenly began to tremble violently, as if shaken by an invisible force, emitting a series of sharp, piercing clanging sounds. Su Luo could clearly feel this intense tremor; the entire room was shaking incessantly, seemingly on the verge of collapse.
The chandelier overhead swayed precariously, leaning precariously, its light flickering erratically and dazzlingly. Like bursts of thunder, Su Luo clearly heard the roar of airplanes hurtling through the air. The sound was so loud that her eardrums throbbed slightly.
Su Luo didn't dare delay for a moment and immediately got up and rushed to the window, wanting to see what was going on. As she approached the window, her gaze was fixed on the once peaceful scene outside. For some reason, an inexplicable premonition welled up in her heart; she felt that what was about to happen would be an experience she would never forget in her life.
At this moment, the entire outpost... no, it should be said that the entire V Group base was shrouded in an atmosphere of extreme tension. Spotlights, normally off, were switched on, illuminating the base as brightly as day. Well-equipped soldiers busily moved about, systematically evacuating research personnel of all ranks. Rows of armored vehicles were neatly arranged at the base's front, forming a solid defensive line.
"The military?" Su Luo was puzzled as she stared at the scene before her. Her eyes widened in disbelief. How could the V Group be involved with the military? And what about those weapons?
Just as Su Luo was deep in thought, Xiao Luo's expression changed drastically, and he rushed in in a panic. He grabbed Su Luo's hand and said breathlessly, "It's bad, Doctor! They say there's an attack outside, and they want us to get into the shelter right away!"
"What?" Su Luo was startled by the sudden news. Before she could react, Xiao Luo grabbed her and ran out the door without saying a word.
As soon as she stepped out of the room, Su Luo sensed a chaotic atmosphere. People were running around in a hurry, their faces filled with fear. She struggled to put on her thick coat while keeping a close eye on her surroundings, trying to figure out what was going on.
"Xiao Luo, what exactly happened? Why was there an attack?" Su Luo asked anxiously.
However, Xiao Luo was also completely confused. He shook his head and replied, "I don't know either! Someone suddenly notified everyone to enter the shelter, saying that there was some kind of emergency... All I know is that I have to make sure you're safe right now!" With that, he took three steps at a time and jumped forward with all his might.
Su Luo followed closely behind him, remaining vigilant and alert to the surroundings. Suddenly, an explosion rang out on the frozen lake about a kilometer away, making the already chaotic scene even more out of control. People screamed, pushed and shoved, and rushed towards the shelter.
"What is that?!" Her legs felt like they were filled with lead, and she could barely walk. Suddenly, a dazzling blue flash, like lightning, pierced through the ice, and the massive body twisted and slammed through the ice. Su Luo witnessed with her own eyes the enormous purple antlers, illuminated by the searchlight, pierce the lake water like sharp swords, creating a giant arching wave.
Beneath the turbulent surface, the colossal beast's eyes, gleaming with a bluish light, were hidden in the rolling waves, as if burning with endless fury. Its massive body was like a mountain range, with huge, pillar-like crystals rising from its back, radiating dazzling light.
Suddenly, "she" abruptly rose from the unfathomable depths, revealing a ferocious face with bared fangs and claws, unleashing a deafening roar. The sound was as powerful as thunder, echoing through the heavens, seemingly tearing the entire world apart.
