Farming in the Magical World
Chapter 63 The Guard's First Battle (1)
Watching the backs of his teammates as they dispersed to their battle positions, Lanny stood beside Tim and asked softly, "How is it? Is everything arranged?"
“Everything is arranged. The shields have been issued and the combat positions have been assigned. My only concern is whether they can really hold out once the battle begins.” Tim’s face was expressionless, but he was clearly still a little uneasy. He wasn’t too confident that these people could withstand the Grummans.
"You should have faith in them; they're the boys you've been training for over half a month!" Lanny smiled, trying to sound calm as he comforted them.
He glanced at Lanny and thought to himself, "Didn't you witness the barbarity of the Grummans? They're not so easy to fight. Even the knights struggled, let alone these commoners?"
In the end, he didn't say it aloud, but just sighed softly, "Now the only hope is that these Grummen are just passing through and won't attack the castle!"
But the final reality shattered Tim's illusions!
Around nine o'clock in the morning, the figures of the Grummans appeared in the distance. First, several tall horses walked slowly forward, and then the crowd following behind gradually came into view.
This group of people passed directly through Hexi Village and headed straight for the castle.
“Old man… ..."
Upon seeing the Grummans come into view, a cacophony of conversation erupted from the already impatient guards.
Tim, watching the Grummans approaching the castle, drew his longsword and shouted, "Quiet! Quiet! Remember our training! They're nothing to be afraid of, just a bunch of barbarians!"
But he sighed inwardly. It seemed that this battle was unavoidable. He wondered how many of these young men would survive!
Lanny had already returned to the castle, and only after hearing the news of the enemy's appearance did he rush to the square.
By the time he arrived, the Grummans were already very close to the castle, stopping within an arrow's reach. They didn't attack immediately; instead, several men on horseback huddled together, pointing and gesturing as if discussing how to attack!
Lanny looked up and saw that these Grummans were indeed tall, with an average height of nearly 1.9 meters. They were all muscle, with dry, messy hair, wearing animal skins, and covered in all sorts of stolen goods!
Their weapons were relatively primitive; some carried stone hammers, some stone axes, and some wooden sticks, while very few carried iron weapons.
One of them, a burly man sitting on a horse, appeared exceptionally strong and carried a huge iron axe; he was clearly the leader of the group.
Suddenly, Lanny's eyes narrowed as he spotted a figure that seemed out of place in the group.
This person's figure wasn't particularly noticeable among the group, but Lanny still spotted him immediately.
Among a group of primitive people dressed in animal skins, a figure dressed in black, with a sword at his waist and neat appearance would immediately attract everyone's attention.
"Uncle Tim, that guy in black, he shouldn't be with this group, right?" Lanny pointed to the black figure on horseback in the distance.
Tim looked at it carefully before speaking, "This guy appeared at Dragonfall Ridge last time. You probably didn't notice him then; he was standing at a distance and didn't make a move!"
Nodding, Lenny whispered, "Looks like this guy is the strategist for this group!"
"Strategist?" Tim turned to look at him. "What did you find out?"
Lanny rolled his eyes, thinking to himself, what could I possibly find out? Have I even left the castle during this time?
"Don't you think this group of Grummans is different from the past? How come they're jumping around like this while surrounded by the Earl? I bet it's this guy who came up with the idea. I don't believe these barbarians can escape our encirclement!"
After saying that, he glanced at the bow and arrow next to Tim and suddenly had a thought, "How good are your archery skills? Can you kill him with one arrow? That would make things much easier for us!"
Tim was speechless at Lanny's sudden idea, but he still silently calculated the distance and shook his head. "These guys have probably been fighting the noble army a lot lately, and they stopped just outside the range of arrows!"
Lanny was somewhat disappointed to hear that he couldn't directly eliminate the enemy's strategist. He had hoped to launch a surprise attack, but he hadn't expected the enemy to be so foolish!
As if remembering something, Tim turned to look at him again. "You don't need to fight. Go back to the castle and wait for news. Be careful not to hurt yourself here!"
Lanny shook his head.
Although his presence here can offer little help, it can at least boost morale to some extent.
Once the enemy can hurt him, the defense line will probably collapse. Is there much difference between hiding in the castle and being here?
Seeing that Lanny refused, Tim simply ignored him and continued to arrange the work of the guards.
"Don't you think the castle owner is stupid?" Petrov chuckled, looking at the castle in the distance. "He's gathered everyone in the castle, saving us the trouble of chasing after them, hahahaha..."
Albert, seated on his horse, carefully surveyed the area around the castle. He frowned slightly, shook his head, and retorted, "The situation seems different from what we expected. Should we send a few men to test it out first?"
What did he see in front of the castle? Was that a moat? Although there was no water, it served a similar function to a moat.
They've been roaming the North for almost half a year now, and they've never encountered anything like this before. Although he didn't think the shallow ditch would do anything, out of a knight's caution, he still perked up.
"Didn't you say you could wipe them out on the way? Why have you become so cowardly? Albert, show some of the boldness you had when you were trying to persuade me."
"Haha, is it because of that little ditch in front, or that thing standing up behind?" Petrov disagreed with his caution, pointing with his finger. "It's such a small ditch, the warriors could easily climb over it. Albert, you're just too cautious!"
After saying that, he patted Albert on the shoulder and burst into hearty laughter!
During this period, Albert's command frustrated him greatly. Even though he hadn't seen any enemies, he suddenly wanted to rush forward. Even though he knew that the area was full of noble troops, he insisted on setting up camp. They had agreed to go to Elfen to make a fortune, but suddenly he said he wanted to return to the tribe halfway through the journey.
Although he always proved the other person right, he was still incredibly frustrated. Today, he finally had a chance to righteously mock the other person, and he wasn't about to let it slip by!
Glancing at the greasy hand on his shoulder, Albert wisely kept quiet, suppressing his discomfort.
He knew that nothing he said could make this guy give up his idea, so why bother?
Moreover, I was just being cautious before. After looking around carefully, I found that the back of the castle seemed very quiet. I could vaguely see some figures lying there motionless, and there was no one moving around. I guess I was just overthinking it.
Did the people inside really expect that shallow ditch to keep out these barbarians? Surely not.
Little did he know that, due to the angle, one could not clearly see the situation on the square from the bottom of the slope. Even Lanny and Tim, who were standing on the edge of the square, could only be vaguely seen as two figures.
Before he could think further, Petrov roared to the sky, signaling the start of an attack.
The surrounding Grummans put down their spoils, grabbed axes in one hand and pounded their chests with the other, roaring in response to their leader's command.
Suddenly, the main road in front of the castle was filled with howling and wailing.
As Petrov ceased his howling, he swung his giant axe forward, shouting, "Kill them..."
The surrounding crowd also brandished their weapons, shouting "Kill them!" as they rushed along the road.
Petrov, who gave the order, did not run forward with the main force. Instead, he rode his horse slowly with a few people around him, appearing quite leisurely.
Upon seeing the enemy launch their attack and hearing their howls and shouts, the guards stirred with commotion.
Tim drew his dark-patterned sword with a clang and shouted again, "Quiet, quiet, stay still and don't move. Wait until they get closer!"
As the enemy approached, Tim noticed that they hadn't dispersed their formation but instead charged headlong into the front lines. He immediately made a call to action: "Team One, come and provide support! Team Three, don't move!"
Looking at Tim's calm and intelligent demeanor, Lanny couldn't help but feel nervous, and his palms were already sweating.
He realized that saying one should remain calm in the face of great adversity was nonsense. When actually facing dozens of primitive men dressed in animal skins, armed with weapons, charging towards you with a roar, who could remain calm? At least he couldn't.
With Tim's command, Black Tiger led a small squad, crouching low, and quickly slipped into the gap between the second squad, instantly doubling the number of people on the front lines.
"Henry, are you nervous? I, g... g... g... a little... nervous," Gavin's talkative nature couldn't be contained under the pressure of nervousness, and he whispered to his teammate next to him.
“I’m a little nervous too… I heard that everyone feels this way the first time they go to the battlefield. The lord said, Lord Tim said, that as long as you remember your usual training, you’ll be fine.” Henry tightened his grip on his spear, his eyes fixed on the howling Grummans in front of him, and spoke in a low voice.
“The master didn’t say the Grummen looked this fierce, I… ” Just as Gavin was about to continue, the black tiger in front of him barked and interrupted him, “Shut up, be quiet!”
Black Tiger, as the captain, was squatting with the shield bearers. Hearing Gavin's words becoming increasingly absurd, he quickly interrupted, saying that, in Lord Lanny's words, this was called disrupting morale, and that wouldn't do.
He was actually very nervous; his heart was pounding like a drum, and his hands were sweating as he gripped the gun barrel.
Although he was a hunter, killing bears and tigers was nothing new to him, but killing someone was a first for him.
But he knew he couldn't waver. The lives of the ten team members were in his hands. Just like Lord Lanny had said, as long as he didn't waver, even if the team members panicked, they wouldn't really fall into chaos. If he panicked, it would all be over.
