Chapter 55 Old Memories
He was the eldest grandson of the Helian clan. He studied in Pingjing Palace as a child, along with the princes of Pingjing. However, he was mischievous and disliked being disciplined. He didn't learn a single word of the teacher's lessons and was punished every day. He was thick-skinned and would just laugh it off after being beaten.
Helian's eldest grandson was a good-for-nothing, a fact known to everyone both inside and outside the palace, and he was often scolded at home as a result.
But so what? He wouldn't listen to a word.
Later, while his teacher was lecturing, he slipped out and ran all over the palace, where he encountered Baili You, who was being bullied by the palace servants.
Qin Huai smiled, his eyes crinkling as he recalled his childhood. He told Qiao Ran, "Back then, Baili You was pushed into the water by the palace servants. I jumped in and pulled him out. You don't know, he was so thin and small back then, so light and airy, and his skin was unbelievably white."
Qiao Ran glanced at Baili You, "The young master is quite fair-skinned now."
Baili You smiled shyly, "My mother is Bai."
"Later I found out that he bullied everyone, and he didn't go to the teacher's lectures. So I said, 'All the other princes go, why don't you go?'" Qin Huai imitated his childhood self and said angrily, "I'll take you!"
Qiao Ran laughed.
"So later I started taking Baili You with me when I attended classes, and then I went out to play. After a while, I realized something was wrong."
Qiao Ran interjected, "While you were gone, did the princes bully the heir apparent?"
Qin Huai slapped his thigh, "You guessed right!"
With Baili You's soft and timid nature since childhood, anyone could bully him.
Later, Qin Huai stopped running away during class and stayed with Baili You, letting the words go in one ear and out the other. The teacher thought he had become well-behaved, but in reality, he just wanted to protect Baili You.
The little bit of ink in my head came from those ear-pouring sessions.
When Baili You was fifteen, Pingjing was going to send a prince to Jinchu, and he chose Baili You.
When Qin Huai found out, he made a scene at home and ran to the palace to find Baili You, telling him not to go.
Don't be afraid, the Helian clan will support him. If he wants, Helian Huai can find a way to replace him with another prince.
But on the day he went to see Baili You, Baili You said firmly, "Ah Huai, I'm willing to go."
Little Helian Huai asked, puzzled, "Why?"
Baili You raised his face and said, "Because my father asked me to go. This is the first time he has asked me to do something, and I am willing."
Helian Huai's heart sank instantly. He returned home in disappointment, until he heard the news that Baili You had been sent to Jin-Chu.
Later, some changes occurred within the Helian clan. Helian Huai grew tired of the treacherous life, changed his name to Qin Huai, and left Pingjing.
At this point, Qiao Ran turned to look at Qin Huai and asked, "Then why did you go to Daliang?"
Qin Huai said, "It was by chance that I stepped into the territory of Daliang. I was too lazy to go any further. Besides, I had nothing else to my name except for the skills I developed from not studying properly since I was a child, which led me to steal chickens and dogs. So I just stayed here."
Qiao Ran glanced at him, smiled, and didn't say anything more. Qin Huai's words were a mix of truth and falsehood, and she didn't want to ask any more questions, nor did she dare to.
"Fate is cruel," Qin Huai suddenly sighed, and said to Baili You, "If I had known this would happen, I should have stopped you from coming to Jin Chu even if it meant my death. Do you regret it now?"
Having witnessed and heard about Baili You's ordeal, Qin Huai and Qiao Ran both thought Baili You would say he regretted it, but he only remained silent for a moment, gently shook his head, and answered almost inaudibly, "I don't regret it."
Qin Huai smiled with a hint of sadness. He got up and slowly walked to the window. A crabapple tree outside the window was in full bloom, its branches and leaves climbing onto the windows of the house in the backyard of the inn. When the guests who stayed inside opened their windows in the morning, they would be swept away by the sight of the crabapple blossoms.
Baili You thought Qin Huai was unhappy, so he called out to him, "Huai, I'll explain to you later, okay?"
Qin Huai turned around, his gaze indifferent, "I never forced you to tell me the real reason you were willing to leave back then. I didn't ask then, and I won't ask now."
Qin Huai was young and impetuous at the time, and without having experienced any major events, he simply thought that Baili You was trying to please Emperor Pingjing. However, after struggling alone in Daliang and eventually returning to Pingjing, he gradually began to suspect that Baili You's departure was not voluntary.
So he took the initiative to ask his father to plead with Emperor Pingjing to allow him to go to Jinchu to see Baili You. He originally just wanted to apologize to Baili You, but who knew that he would be in such a bad situation.
Qin Huai felt sorry for him.
Baili You felt unwell, so Qin Huai had the guards take him back to his room to rest.
Only Qiao Ran and Qin Huai remained in the room. Qiao Ran stretched, walked over, climbed to the window, picked a crabapple blossom, played with it in her hand for a while, and said boredly, "I'm going back to my room to rest too."
Qin Huai called out to her, "Are you really going back to sleep?"
"Otherwise what?" Qiao Ran sized him up.
"Didn't you want to settle scores with me? Don't you have anything to ask me?" Qin Huai said seriously, listing off Qiao Ran's questions one by one. "Aren't you going to ask me how I left Shu? Why did I leave without a word? And why did I return to Pingjing after so many years? Or rather, don't you want to know why I've been hiding my identity from you all this time, making you think I'm a pitiful little thief?"
Qiao Ran paused, gently crushing the crabapple blossom in her palm with her slender fingers. After a moment, she casually tossed the flower aside, took out a handkerchief, and absentmindedly wiped her hands. "So many questions, which one should I ask?"
Qin Huai felt uneasy, but forced himself to remain calm, "Ask whichever you want to ask?"
Qiao Ran folded the handkerchief again and carefully put it back in her bosom. "But I don't want to ask about any of this now."
Qin Huai paused for a moment.
Qiao Ran raised her head. "I just want to know, will Helian Huai become my enemy in the future?"
Pingjing and Daliang share a deep-seated hatred stemming from war, a hatred that time cannot erase. The people of Pingjing hate Daliang just as the people of Daliang are wary of Pingjing.
Qin Huai was born into a noble family in Pingjing. The Helian clan will not stop their revenge against Daliang. So what about Helian Huai?
Qin Huai took two quick steps toward Qiao Ran and said, "You are my second-in-command, how dare I be your enemy?"
Qiao Ran smiled and said, "That's good. I have fox spirits in my house, so I have to go take care of them."
Vixen?
Qin Huai didn't understand what Qiao Ran meant at first, thinking that she had become so unrestrained. He was startled, but by the time he realized what she meant, Qiao Ran had already pushed open the door and left.
She whistled cheerfully and said, "Young Master Huai, you should think carefully about how to help the young master get revenge."
Qin Huai chased after him, saying, "You don't need to worry about me. I definitely won't let those who bullied the young master get away with it. I learned my vengeful spirit from you. Let's talk about the important things right now."
Qiao Ran looked puzzled. "Is there anything else important?"
Qin Huai pursed his lips, pulled her to a corner, and said somewhat embarrassedly, "You're keeping a vixen?"
“Yeah,” Qiao Ran said, “I have two.”
"..."
Qin Huai blinked, completely unable to fathom what had happened to Qiao Ran during his absence.
He coughed lightly and patiently advised, "We've been together the whole time, and you were able to contact this kind of person waiting in the house without my sight. It's clear that this isn't the first time you've done this. You're very experienced. But let me tell you, Qiao, this isn't a good thing for a young lady like you."
Qiao Ran looked bewildered and reached out to touch Qin Huai's forehead. "What did you say?"
"Well!" Qin Huai was too embarrassed to say it outright, so he lowered his voice and said, "Qiao, if a man goes out and has a good time with a vixen, people will at most scold him a couple of times. But what kind of man goes out with a male vixen?"
Qiao Ran was dumbfounded, then suddenly realized what was going on and exclaimed angrily, "This fox spirit is not that fox spirit!"
Qin Huaiyi retorted sternly, "What's so different about vixens? Aren't they all just seducing people?"
