Chapter 40 Snow Wolf

Qiao Ran had been busy by herself for half a day, then patted the snow off her hands and said, "We'll head north. The terrain is higher in the north, and it will get colder the further we go. To the east is the sea, and to the south is Yang. Neither of the Moon Foxes will go there."

“But we’ve lost our way, how can we tell which way is north?” Shan Nian asked.

Qiao Ran pointed to the right, "This is north."

"How did Qiao Qiao know?" Ge Qingqing wasn't distrustful of Qiao Ran, she was just curious.

Frost had formed on Qiao Ran's eyelashes beneath her hat. She reached out and wiped it away, then smiled. "I just knew it."

She had lost her way in rainforests and deserts before, and over time she developed this excellent ability to sense and locate herself. She couldn't explain why, but she was certain that she was heading in the right direction.

Wu Yang paused for a moment, then said, "Then let's head in this direction."

"Wait," Qiao Ran suddenly called out to everyone, taking off the bundle she was carrying. She remembered that she had brought an extra gauze dress with her before leaving home, just for this moment.

She used a knife to cut the two layers of the gauze skirt apart, making it into a belt shape, one for each person. "Walking with your eyes covered can easily cause snow blindness if you walk in the snowy region for a long time. This gauze skirt is black, so it can protect your eyes."

"Qiaoqiao, you're so smart," Ge Qingqing said, taking the strip of cloth. "How do you know everything?"

Qiao Ran slung her bundle back over her shoulder. "Stop being silly. We need to find somewhere to stay quickly. Since there are snow wolves at night, there must be many caves in sheltered places. Let's find a place to settle down first."

Pei Chenghu stared at Qiao Ran for a while. She had never been spoiled throughout the journey, and her behavior today changed his opinion of her. She was calm, methodical and organized.

He increasingly understood that Qiao Ran would undoubtedly be a valuable asset to the young master of the villa in the future.

Little did she know that the harsher the environment, the more Qiao Ran felt a strange sense of belonging. She led the people of Tuoyue Pavilion across the snowfield, just as she had once walked through the sand dunes with the sisters in the organization. They were on a mission, ready to die for their cause.

They traveled for another hour before finally finding a cave hidden in the snow. Wu Yang and Pei Chenghu went in first to explore and came out saying, "There are no living creatures."

“It’s already dark, so let’s stay here tonight. There are some dead trees blocking the way in front of the cave, so we can hear any noises,” Qiao Ran thought it was a great place. She could even make a fire to keep warm at night, so she went inside excitedly.

The cave wasn't large, but it was more than enough to accommodate the group of them. Cheng Kaiji took out some dry rations from his bag and handed them to Qiao Ran, saying, "Qiao Qiao, eat some to replenish your energy. Qingqing and I will go out and get some firewood."

Qiao Ran smiled and took it, saying, "Be careful."

They took turns keeping watch at night. First, Da Yue and Lao Pi guarded the cave entrance, while Qiao Ran and the others sat around the fire to discuss things.

Wu Yang said, "We are getting close to the depths. The problem now is how to find the Moon Fox's trail."

We can't keep searching for the past every single day, can we?

Cheng Kaiji said, "We'll probably be followed by others as soon as we leave the manor. With so many people in the snowy region, and given Moon Fox's timid nature, she'll definitely hide even more if she senses it. This isn't a good solution."

Qiao Ran's eyes lit up. "Then the only option is to lure it out?"

"How do we lead them?" Ge Qingqing listened intently.

Qiao Ran cupped the firelight in her hands to warm herself, her breath steaming in the cold air. Her eyes gleamed with a mischievous glint. "The moon fox is timid but has a keen sense of smell. It's afraid of snow wolves, and it certainly wouldn't dare stay in places where snow wolves frequent. We need snow wolf blood."

Cheng Kaiji: "The blood of snow wolves has a very strong smell. If a moon fox smells it, it will think there is a snow wolf nearby and will rush out in a panic, leaving traces."

That's exactly what I meant.

“It’s one way, we can only give it a try,” Wu Yang said. “Leave the hunting of snow wolves to me and Lao Pei.”

Pei Chenghu nodded, and Cheng Kaiji added more fuel to the fire. Just as he was about to tell Qiao Ran and the others to rest, Old Pi at the cave entrance cried out in alarm, "Commander! There's movement in the distance!"

Everyone immediately became alert and rushed towards the cave entrance. The night sky was a pale white due to the snow, and the aurora borealis was faintly visible on the horizon, so the visibility was not low.

Qiao Ran and the others stood at the cave entrance and looked down. Pairs of star-like, ethereal green were gathering in one place.

Ge Qingqing exclaimed, "What is that?"

Qiao Ran said in a deep voice, "Snow Wolf."

As if what she said came true. But the snow wolves seemed to be attacking something. Qiao Ran listened carefully and heard cries for help mixed in with the howling wind. She said, "At least one group of people down there has encountered snow wolves and is being attacked."

Therefore, this place is not safe now either. If the people below win, that will be fine, but if they lose, the snow wolves will definitely smell the scent of this place and come looking for them, which will lead to a great battle.

"Should we help or not?" Qiao Ran turned to Wu Yang for his opinion.

It wasn't out of sympathy for them, but out of a desire to protect myself.

Wu Yang focused his mind, "Wait a little longer."

Everyone fell silent, cautiously observing from their high vantage points. There was probably more than one group below. They heard the howls of the snow wolves. Fifteen minutes later, the two sides seemed to be locked in a stalemate, with casualties on both sides.

But after a while, Ge Qingqing pointed to the distance with sharp eyes and exclaimed, "Look everyone, a pack of snow wolves!"

On the opposite mountain, pairs of eerie eyes gradually appeared, followed by deafening roars. The snow wolves howled at the moon, their cries echoing across the snowy plains in the dead of night, seemingly heralding the death of the intruders.

"Not good!" Wu Yang gripped his knife tightly, his voice trembling slightly. "Those below are just the Snow Wolves' vanguard. The real main force is still behind them. Those people below are beyond saving."

Pei Chenghu took a deep breath and immediately decided, "Let's retreat!"

No one thought about it anymore, showing no pity for the tragic end of those below. But before leaving, Qiao Ran glanced back and saw the terrified cries for help from those below. She frowned and quickly followed the others further north.

Ge Qingqing's palms were sweating with worry. "Do you think they'll come after us after eating the people below?"

Qiao Ran reached out and pinched him, "Pah, pah, pah, what unlucky things are you saying? Quickly spit it out."

Ge Qingqing quickly pulled down her face mask and spat "pui pui pui" several times, which eased the tension in everyone's hearts.

But no one knew if Ge Qingqing's mouth was truly blessed, because as they walked, they suddenly noticed that the wolf howls in the distance were getting closer and closer. Everyone stopped and looked back.

Cheng Kaiji slapped Ge Qingqing, "You jinx, I'll throw you out to feed the wolves."

Ge Qingqing's face turned green.

Qiao Ran looked over and said, "It was the men below who were running upstairs, which attracted the wolf pack."

With those chilling, dark eyes right in front of them, running away would only lead to being caught and losing strength. Everyone's faces turned pale instantly. Qiao Ran could hear everyone's heartbeats, which were almost jumping out of their chests.

“Snow wolves are afraid of fire,” Qiao Ran swallowed. “Did everyone bring the torches we made in the cave earlier?”

Ge Qingqing replied with trembling teeth, "I'm carrying it on my back."

He said he was about to get kicked again, and Pei Chenghu said sternly, "What are you trembling for? Be tougher."

Ge Qingqing was almost in tears. "Brothers and sisters, I just can't be tough. The wolves are coming."

"..."

Qiao Ran was right. It was indeed the people below who, in their desperate attempts to survive, lured the snow wolves here.

They had initially thought they were doomed, but when they saw Wu Yang and his men in the distance, they were as if they had seen saviors, and they immediately shouted, "Commander Wu! Quickly, go to Commander Wu!"

Cheng Kaiji's face darkened. "Damn it!"

Sure enough, a group of people with missing limbs and pale faces ran up shortly afterward. Their faces were so pale they almost covered the snowfield beneath their feet. Qiao Ran saw the young master of Luoxue Manor among them and couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.

The man also saw Qiao Ran and the others, and walked straight over. He seemed exhausted, but still bowed to Wu Yang with an elegant demeanor, saying, "Please, Commander Wu, lend a hand."

Wu Yang didn't reply to him because the snow wolves had already surrounded them.
