Transmigrating into a dragon clan experimental subject, is that even possible?
Chapter 205 will encounter some trouble.
When they returned to the campsite, Xia Mi was already there by the campfire. She was sitting by the fire, poking at the burning firewood, her smile as bright as ever. Seeing Lu Mingfei approach, she looked up and smiled at him: "Hey, Lu, why do you look so distracted? Didn't you sleep well, or were you scared again?"
Lu Mingfei paused for a moment, subconsciously touching the painful spot on the back of his neck, and hesitated before speaking, "I... I don't think I remember what happened just now."
"What do you remember?" Xia Mi blinked, her tone filled with curiosity.
Lu Mingfei thought for a moment, but found that only fragmented images remained in his mind. He couldn't even distinguish which were real and which were just illusions. He finally sighed, "It's nothing, I was probably just too nervous."
"So nervous you fainted?" Xia Mi chuckled, her tone slightly teasing. "Looks like you still need more training, Lu. You can't always be a burden when you're with big shots like Chu Zihang and Caesar."
"I'm not a burden..." Lu Mingfei muttered to himself, but he didn't have the confidence to refute it. He sat down by the campfire, secretly glancing at Xia Mi, but more questions arose in his mind.
Xia Mi's expression remained natural; her smile and tone showed no abnormality, as if the battle just now was nothing more than a trivial matter to her. However, Lu Mingfei felt that there was something subtle hidden behind that ease. He dared not ask further, nor dared to think too deeply, and could only suppress these doubts in his heart for the time being.
The campfire cast its light on Xia Mi's face, and in the interplay of light and shadow, her eyes seemed veiled in a light gauze, both bright and deep, like an unfathomable lake. At this moment, Lu Mingfei couldn't even be sure whether he was seeing Xia Mi's true appearance, or the appearance she had made him see.
The campfire flickered gently, casting a warm orange glow that warmed the chilly mountain night air. Caesar leaned against a rock, a half-empty bottle of wine clutched in his hand, its origin unknown. Chu Zihang sat quietly on the other side, his eyes lowered as he polished the Dragon Cutter blade, its edge reflecting a cold light in the firelight. Tianban lay on the ground, a blade of grass dangling from his mouth, seemingly gazing leisurely at the starry sky.
Lu Mingfei huddled by the campfire, glancing at Xia Mi beside him every now and then. She seemed no different from usual, even humming a light tune and fiddling with the skewers in her hands, as if the dangerous operation before them had left no trace. However, this nonchalant ease only made Lu Mingfei more uneasy.
"Why are you staring at me like that?" Xia Mi suddenly looked up, a teasing smile on her lips. "Lu, you're not so much mesmerized, are you?"
"N-no, I didn't!" Lu Mingfei abruptly looked away, his cheeks slightly flushed. "I just felt... where did you go just now? I didn't see you."
"Oh, me?" Xia Mi pretended to think for a moment, blinked, and then laughed, "Of course I'll find a safe place to hide. After all, you know I'm not as good at fighting as you guys in this kind of situation."
Lu Mingfei paused, feeling that her explanation sounded somewhat far-fetched, yet he couldn't find a reason to refute it. After all, Xia Mi certainly didn't seem like someone who could directly confront a monster. But the blurry image and familiar aura lingered in his mind, making him vaguely feel that things might not be so simple.
"Oh, right, Lu." Xia Mi suddenly handed him a skewer of grilled meat. "Want to try some? They're freshly grilled, I saved them especially for you."
Lu Mingfei subconsciously took the skewer, staring at it blankly for a moment. He felt that Xia Mi's behavior tonight was too natural, which made him uneasy, but he couldn't quite put his finger on what was wrong. In the end, he had no choice but to bite into it, and the taste was surprisingly good.
"How does it taste?" Xia Mi asked with a smile.
"It's fine." Lu Mingfei nodded, forcing a smile, but the unease still lingered in his heart. He continued eating his skewers, but unconsciously glanced up at Xia Mi and found her poking at the campfire, seemingly unaware of his gaze.
A gust of wind blew by, the campfire crackled softly, and a faint aroma of burning filled the air. Tian suddenly sat up, stretched, and broke the silence in the camp: "Is that about it for tonight? We still have to keep traveling tomorrow."
"Hmm." Chu Zihang responded softly, sheathing the Dragon Cutter and standing up to dust himself off. He glanced at Caesar, who shrugged and lazily stood up as well.
The group quickly tidied up the campfire and prepared to rest. Lu Mingfei sat beside his sleeping bag, but hesitated to lie down. His mind was filled with fragments of the day's battle, and the more he thought about it, the stranger it seemed, but the crucial details were shrouded in mist, impossible to discern.
"Aren't you going to sleep yet?" Xia Mi's voice suddenly came from the side.
Lu Mingfei looked up at her face, which appeared hazy and soft in the night. He hesitated for a moment, then finally asked, "Xia Mi, you...you really didn't do anything? I have a feeling I saw you during the day, but it didn't seem like it..."
Xia Mi was taken aback for a moment, then gave a slightly innocent look: "You saw me? Didn't I tell you? I've been looking for a safe place to hide. Lu, are you just too tired and imagining things?"
"Maybe..." Lu Mingfei lowered his head, somewhat guiltily touching the back of his neck. He didn't dare to press further, and was even afraid that if he delved deeper, he would discover some unacceptable answer.
"Don't overthink it." Xia Mi gently patted his shoulder, her tone gentle with a hint of teasing. "Lu, you're just overthinking things. Go to sleep, we have to travel tomorrow."
Lu Mingfei nodded, forced a smile, and lay down in his sleeping bag. He closed his eyes, forcing himself to stop thinking about those blurry fragments and Xia Mi's unusual behavior. However, in the darkness, that familiar scent resurfaced in his mind, lingering there. Just as he was about to fall asleep, he vaguely heard Xia Mi humming a song softly, the melody gentle and familiar, seemingly possessing a reassuring power. He gradually relaxed, and in his hazy consciousness, he seemed to see that dark figure flit by again, carrying a gentle aura.
Once he was completely asleep, Xia Mi lowered her head slightly, glanced at him, and a complex light flashed in her eyes. She sighed softly, threw the branch in her hand into the campfire, and watched the fire gradually die down, a cryptic smile playing on her lips.
The next morning, the mountain mist had not yet dissipated, and the air was filled with a moist and fresh scent. Lu Mingfei groggily opened his eyes and found that the campfire beside him had gone out, leaving only a pile of ashes emitting wisps of white smoke. Caesar was leaning against a tree, organizing his equipment, while Chu Zihang, as calm as ever, was already standing not far away, as if checking the safety of the surroundings.
"Awake?" Xia Mi's voice suddenly came from beside him. Lu Mingfei turned his head and saw her squatting beside him, holding a cup of hot water, which she handed to him.
"Ah, thank you." Lu Mingfei took the water glass, his eyes slightly evasive. His doubts from last night hadn't dissipated, but he didn't dare to ask. Xia Mi still seemed approachable, as if nothing had happened.
"Hurry up and drink it, it's still early. Drink some hot water to warm your stomach," Xia Mi said with a smile, then patted his shoulder and added softly, "Don't overthink it."
Lu Mingfei paused for a moment, then looked up into her eyes. Those eyes held a gentle tenderness, as if they understood everything, yet said nothing. He finally lowered his head, silently drinking his water, no longer dwelling on the events of the previous night.
"We have a lot of travel to do today, so don't hold us back, Lu." Xia Mi stood up, clapped her hands, and said in a relaxed tone. Then she turned and walked towards Tian, grabbed his collar, and urged him to get up quickly.
As Lu Mingfei watched her retreating figure, his feelings grew increasingly complex. He always felt that Xia Mi was shrouded in mystery, yet her behavior was flawless. He shook his head vigorously, trying to focus on the task at hand.
"Lu Mingfei, stop daydreaming, let's go." Chu Zihang's voice came without emotion, as if he were just saying it casually, but the subtle authority it conveyed still made Lu Mingfei stand up subconsciously.
"Here we come!" He grabbed his backpack and hurriedly caught up with the group.
The mountain path was muddy in the early morning, the dew from last night still lingering. Caesar walked at the head of the group, a folded map in his hand, a toothpick in his mouth, looking far more relaxed than if he were on a mission. Tian walked along, complaining about the mud on his shoes, occasionally kicking away weeds and dirt. Lu Mingfei followed at the back, silently lost in his own thoughts.
"How far is our destination?" Chu Zihang walked to Caesar's side and asked calmly.
“According to the map, it’s about another two hours’ journey. However—” Caesar pointed to the valley ahead, “that might be troublesome. Getting through that area will probably be a bit of a hassle.”
