Chapter 42 Visiting the Market

Bai Yushen raised his large hand and touched He Shi's head. The rough calluses on his thumb brushed against He Shi's forehead, bringing a slight sting.

"What's your name?"

When He Shi heard him ask that, he barely ignored the strange feeling of his head being completely enveloped by a warm, dry hand, and said in a low voice, "He Shi, the Shi as in stone."

“Good name, strong enough.” Bai Yushen smiled again, his sharp eyes curving up, his canine teeth appearing even whiter in the sunlight. “My name is Bai Yushen, Bai Yu as in white jade, and Shen as in abyss.”

He withdrew his hand and said to Chuhe, "Let's go back to the village first, so we can make it in time for dinner."

After saying that, he mounted his horse, pulled on the reins, turned around, and started trotting.

Chu He didn't say anything and turned to walk towards the carriage. He Shi snapped out of his daze and hurriedly followed.

On the wide and smooth official road, a tall and strong horse trotted along with its long legs, followed by a dusty little carriage.

Occasionally, passing caravans and pedestrians would look on with curiosity, and upon closer inspection, they would find that the two men on horseback and driving the carriage looked remarkably familiar.

"Aren't these the two young masters from the manor?"

"It really is true, Second Young Master, why are you driving such a dilapidated carriage?"

"Who knows? Maybe it's some kind of secret operation arranged by the village. We'd better not discuss it too much."

"It's been more than half a year since I last saw you, gentlemen, you are still as dashing and spirited as ever..."

"..."

He Shi leaned against the carriage and managed to catch a few indistinct words of conversation amidst the rumbling of the wheels. He thought to himself, "They're so famous that even passersby recognize them. Is it because they've come to my neighborhood?"

This somewhat strange pair continued forward on the official road. After an unknown amount of time, He Shi suddenly heard some noisy and chaotic voices. He paused for a moment, then realized that they must have arrived at Huaiyang Town.

Sure enough, the next moment someone knocked on the carriage window twice. He Shi opened the window and saw Bai Yushen standing on horseback next to the carriage. He turned his head to look at him and said with a smile, "I have to go to town to buy some things. Do you want to come with me? It's still early. We can take a stroll around Huaiyang Town."

He Shi thought for a moment, nodded, pushed open the car door and jumped out, looking up at Chu He who was still sitting on the carriage shaft: "Brother Chu, aren't you leaving?"

Bai Yushen: "He has never liked going to markets, so it's fine for just the two of us to go."

After saying this, he stepped off his horse and handed the reins to Chuhe.

Chu He took it without saying a word, nodded slightly to Bai Yushen and He Shi, and drove the carriage away with the horse.

Bai Yushen clapped his hands and smiled at He Shi: "Let's go, little stone, I'll take you to buy some nice things."

He Shi didn't ask how they would meet up, nor did he pay attention to the overly familiar address. He followed closely behind him and walked towards another street.

The market in Huaiyang Town is very large and lively. Perhaps because it is close to the Chu Family Manor, there are obviously more martial arts practitioners here than in other towns. The streets are bustling with people, many of whom are carrying all kinds of weapons.

Bai Yu was afraid that He Shi would be bumped into and hurt, so she bent down, grabbed his hand, and led him forward.

He Shi was taken aback and awkwardly tried to pull away, but Bai Yushen gripped his hand even tighter. He looked down at the other's slightly furrowed brows and chuckled, "Martial arts practitioners are often hot-tempered and unruly. Although there are few brutes causing trouble in the town because of the manor, with so many people gathered together, both good and bad, it's inevitable that some messy things will happen."

He pointed to a stall to his left with his other finger: "Look."

He Shi temporarily put aside his discomfort and looked in the direction the man was pointing.

It was a small stall selling wood carvings. Two young women were leaning against each other, talking about a small object.

The crowd behind them pushed and shoved past, and one inconspicuous man paused for a moment.

He Shi clearly saw his hand brush past one of the women's waists, and when he withdrew it, there was a bright-colored purse in his palm. Then the man stuffed the purse into his robes and walked away without making a sound.

The movements were very practiced and well-concealed; it was clear the perpetrator was a repeat offender.

Bai Yushen kept staring at He Shi's face, and seeing that he remained expressionless throughout, he couldn't help but ask, "Did you see that?"

He Shi withdrew his gaze, looked up and met Bai Yushen's eyes: "I saw it, the man stole the woman's purse."

Bai Yushen looked at his beautiful eyes, which were lightly covered by long eyelashes, and there was no emotion in those light-colored pupils: "You... don't you feel scared or angry?"

He Shi blinked in surprise: "Huh?"

He paused, then spoke again with a hint of confusion in his voice: "I often see people stealing. Sometimes when they're caught, they just snatch the item and run away. Why be afraid or angry?"

Bai Yushen: "?"

He coughed lightly: "There's really no need to be afraid or angry. I just wanted to tell you that there are bad people in town, and it's safer for you to be with me."

Although it was confirmed that the child's eyesight was indeed extraordinary, how could a fair-skinned little child like you often see people stealing things?

Did he used to hang out on the streets?

No way, it doesn't look like it...

As they were thinking, the two arrived at a shop selling jewelry.

Bai Yushen pulled He Shi inside.

The shop was quite large, and several customers were picking out items from the shelves on the left. The shopkeeper was smiling and introducing the items to them when he turned his head and saw Bai Yushen. His eyes lit up immediately, and he whispered something to the customers before jogging over: "Young Master Bai, you've arrived."

Bai Yu nodded deeply: "Manager Zhao, has the sword tassel we talked about a few days ago arrived?"

"We've arrived! We've saved everything for you, please come this way!"

Upon reaching the counter, Manager Zhao took a long wooden box from the shelf behind him and placed it on the counter. As he opened it, he said, "This one is the best quality in this batch. It was sent from Shuzhou. It was a long journey and only arrived yesterday. Do you think it suits your taste?"

Bai Yushen released He Shi's hand and picked up a long, peach-colored tassel from the box, examining it closely.

He Shi quietly shook off the hand that had been held the whole way, breathed a sigh of relief, and looked up at the counter.

But he was too short; he could only see the box, not what was inside.

Bai Yu looked at it for a while, put down the sword tassel in his hand, picked up a light green one to look at it, put it down again, and then picked up another one...

Finally, he chose a sky-blue one and had Manager Zhao wrap it up, then took out his purse to pay.

Suddenly, as if remembering something, he paused in his hand holding the silver and said to Manager Zhao, "Do you have any hair ribbons? Bring me a few plain ones to take a look."

Manager Zhao nodded repeatedly, ran to the other side of the shelf, selected three or four hairbands, and placed them on the counter.

Bai Yu Shen looked at it for a moment, then picked it up and handed it to He Shi: "Little Stone, take a look, which one do you like?"
