Chapter 4 Pretty Little One

What about people?

He Yu was puzzled. She moved the camera around but couldn't find the little beggar on the street.

Did it refresh elsewhere?

He Yu opened the map in the upper left corner.

The map is mostly gray and unreadable, with only a small area lit up, marked with the name "Yuanshan County Town".

He Yu clicked on those four words, and a simple and easy-to-understand map popped up on the screen.

There is a shining five-pointed star in the north center of the map, which should represent your current location. Another eye-catching symbol is a green arrow pointing to the street next to this street.

He Yu clicked the arrow, and immediately jumped to another street.

This appears to be a residential area. It's called a street, but it's actually just a narrow alley with a cobblestone path and houses on both sides.

He Yu found the little beggar without much difficulty; he was clearing snow from in front of a house.

He Yu saw a speech bubble appear above the little beggar's head, which read: 【Hey! Ha!】

Is that a lot of effort? It's kind of cute...

He Yu zoomed in on the image and saw the little beggar wearing an ill-fitting, drafty cotton coat, holding a shovel as tall as himself, shoveling snow onto a small wheelbarrow beside him, working with great enthusiasm.

Suddenly, he stopped shoveling snow, bent down to look at the ground, and scratched his head as if in annoyance.

He Yu zoomed in on the image, trying to see what problems he had encountered.

It turns out that there was a sizable patch of ice buried in this pile of snow; someone must have poured water there and frozen it.

He Yu watched as the little beggar struggled to break the ice with a shovel, and her fingers itched to help him.

Remembering her previous experience of hitting dogs, she tried pushing the ice on the ground with her hand, but nothing happened.

She poked at the screen again, and this time it responded!

The thick block of ice seemed to have been caught by her; it started to curl up from the edge and popped off the ground with a "pop".

It worked!

He Yu chuckled, thinking that since he had already helped, he might as well go all the way.

She enthusiastically used her index finger and thumb to "pick up" the snow piled up to the side.

Half of the large pile of snow was lifted directly and gently placed on the cart, instantly filling it up.

He Yu found it amusing and chuckled as he tapped the little beggar on the shoulder, trying to prompt him to push the cart. But the little beggar seemed to be stunned and stood motionless.

Is the game lagging?

Just then, the door of the house opened, and a middle-aged man came out.

The man looked at the scene before him, a bubble appearing above his head: "Kid, you're pretty quick! Haven't eaten yet, have you?"

The little beggar, who had been frozen in place, finally reacted, a flash appearing above his head: "[Nothing.]"

[Middle-aged man: Wait here, I'll go get you some food.]

The middle-aged man went home. The little beggar slowly lifted the wheelbarrow, pushed it out of the alley, poured the snow on an open ground, pushed the wheelbarrow back, and after putting it down, looked around nervously.

The middle-aged man quickly came out of the door, holding a pancake in his hand, and handed it to the little beggar: "Eat this."

The little beggar took it and put it in his pocket, picked up the shovel, scooped up the block of ice, and poured it onto the car.

[Middle-aged man: Just knock on the door after you've finished shoveling the snow.]

After he finished speaking, he went back to the courtyard and closed the door behind him.

Seeing that the little beggar had returned to normal, He Yu couldn't resist poking his butt again.

There was no reaction; it seems I can't interact with the character...

He Yu felt a little regretful, but then she thought that she could still help him with his work, which was not bad either.

So she used the same trick again, and soon filled the cart with snow. Before the little beggar could even lift a finger, she pushed the wheelbarrow with two fingers, wobbling out of the alley. After dumping the snow on the open ground, she pushed the cart back, still wobbling.

They made three trips back and forth, clearing the snow from in front of the house and even clearing the snow from the surrounding roads.

At first, the little beggar would stand around helplessly, and He Yu found it amusing to see the lifelike look of terror on his face, as if he were teasing an electronic child.

Later, he became completely numb. Wrapped in a cotton coat and leaning on a shovel, he stood there expressionless, his eyes no longer moving. He looked both pitiful and adorable.

After teasing the game character, He Yu felt refreshed and in a great mood. Her back and legs no longer ached, and she was even able to bake three ovens of desserts in one go.

Just then, the guests came to pick up the cake. He Yu turned off the game, saw the guests off, and went upstairs to cook herself a bowl of noodles.

After happily finishing her meal and washing the dishes, she ran downstairs to close the shop and then excitedly opened the game.

This game is really addictive; the more you play, the more hooked you become.

By this time, it was already evening, and the sky was dark.

He Yu glanced at the time on his phone. It had been a little over an hour since he closed the game, and he still didn't quite understand the game's time mechanism.

But it doesn't matter, as long as it's fun.

In the game, the little beggar has returned to his little hut in the corner, in his familiar huddled-up position.

He Yu adjusted his perspective and, sure enough, saw him secretly munching on something.

It seems the middle-aged man gave me the pancake.

So cute, like a sneaky little hamster.

He Yu didn't disturb him while he was eating, and decided to explore the [Character] function that she hadn't seen yet.

Clicking on "Character" reveals a single, lonely avatar—a cute, chibi-style beggar—followed by "Character Details."

He Yu tapped it, and a new interface popped up, with a full-body image of the little beggar on the left side of the screen.

He wasn't wearing shoes, and his tattered trousers were a bit short, revealing a section of his thin ankles.

She was wearing a large cotton coat on her upper body. Her messy black hair, which originally covered half of her face, was combed back to reveal a pair of light-colored eyes. Her cheeks were thin and her lips were pale, giving her a sickly and aloof look.

This was the first time He Yu had seen the character's illustration.

She was immediately struck by the other person's unique and beautiful face, especially their eyes, which were crystal clear, deep and serene, like two richly colored amber pieces.

Her gaze shifted to the character introduction on the side, which was only three and a half lines long, unexpectedly short.

[He Shi: 11 years old, born on the sixth day of the ninth lunar month, parents and birthplace unknown. He was adopted by an old beggar as an infant. The old beggar died of illness when he was eight years old, after which he wandered alone.]

That's it? This introduction is way too simple!

She scrolled down and saw two options at the very bottom of the character introduction: status and talent.

Thank goodness, I knew it! A game with such excellent controls wouldn't skimp on this kind of thing...

He Yu opened the status, and the pop-up dialog box read:

Mild hunger, mild pain, moderate cold.

A string of red negative statuses.

This is too miserable...

He Yu shook his head, then clicked on [Talents], and was immediately dazzled by the long list of glittering talents. He took a closer look.

The first two terms, tinged with gold and purple, not only flashed but also had special effects: [Swordsmanship] and [Archery].

Below this was a long list of golden legends, which He Yu glanced at, including but not limited to [mechanisms], [pharmaceuticals], [massage], [survival], [acting skills]...

Wait, even the [Cooking] talent is gold?

That’s too exaggerated…

He Yu closed the chat box expressionlessly, but the corner of her mouth twitched involuntarily.

Is this the game's protagonist?

With all sorts of unrelated top-tier talents being thrown at us, is the game's plot going to follow the template of a male-oriented wish-fulfillment novel?
