Chapter 38 Dried Apricots
When Wei Buyu came downstairs, it was already completely dark. A candle was lit on the counter in the lobby on the first floor, dimly illuminating a small corner where Manager Wang was dozing off.
She wore a dark cloak, the hem of which was too long and dragged on the ground as she walked, meandering all the way to the counter.
A pale, slender hand emerged from the gap in the cloak and gently tapped on the counter, startling Manager Wang awake.
He blinked groggily, then recognized the person standing in front of him and quickly stood up from his chair: "Miss Wei, you've arrived? Is there anything you need that I can prepare for you?"
Wei Buyu's exquisite makeup was slightly smudged, and her cheeks were pale and bloodless. She opened her beautiful eyes and looked at Manager Wang, her eyes filled with dense red veins. When she spoke, her voice was hoarse: "Where is Xu Ke?"
"This..." Manager Wang's heart pounded, and he looked embarrassed. "I don't know."
Wei Buyu's lips twitched nervously. After a moment of silence, he suddenly swung his hand and knocked over the candlestick. The flickering candlelight touched the account book and instantly burst into flames.
Manager Wang was startled and hurriedly picked up the candle, grabbed the teapot that was placed to the side, lifted the lid, and poured all the tea inside onto the ledger, finally extinguishing the flame that hadn't even had a chance to burn brightly.
Wei Buyu watched this scene quietly, his face expressionless.
Just then, a somewhat puzzled voice came from the gate: "Miss Wei, Manager Wang, what happened?"
Wei Buyu and Manager Wang turned around at the same time and saw Xu Ke standing in the darkness at the doorway, carrying two bags in his hands and tilting his head.
"Xu Ke, you still dare to come back?" Wei Buyu's voice was icy, his gaze fixed on Xu Ke like a sharp sword.
"Why wouldn't I dare to come back?" Xu Ke walked into the lobby as if he hadn't sensed the murderous intent emanating from her. He placed the things he was carrying on the table and called out, "Manager Wang, it's so dark in the shop, why don't you light more candles?"
Shopkeeper Wang quickly took out a candle from under the counter, lit it, placed it on the candlestick, and handed it to Xu Ke.
Xu Ke untied the string binding the paper package and beckoned to Wei Buyu: "Miss Wei, the sect leader specifically instructed me to buy you some dried sour apricots from a shop in the south of the city. Wouldn't you like to try some?"
Wei Buyu's figure trembled, and after standing there blankly for a moment, he slowly walked to the table and sat down.
Xu Ke pushed the untied paper package in front of her, his smile causing the burlap on his nose to wrinkle slightly: "I was worried the dried apricots would be too sour, so I also bought some rice dumpling candy. Try them too."
Looking at the two packets of snacks in front of him, Wei Buyu's anger, which had been building up in his eyes, was released like a flood, leaving behind a deep sense of powerlessness and self-mockery.
She reached out, picked up a dried apricot, put it in her mouth, and swallowed it whole.
"The sect leader said that we must buy from the right place for the sourness to be just right. How is it? It tastes pretty good, doesn't it?"
Xu Ke looked at her with a smile, his expression like that of someone teasing a wounded, lost fox trapped in a snare and running around in a panic.
Wei Buyu ate another dried apricot, nodded, and whispered, "Delicious..."

"Dong dong dong..."
A soft, rhythmic knock sounded at the door. He Yu, who was looking down at the game screen, looked up and called out, "Come in."
The small cubicle in the outpatient clinic was pushed open, and Han Qi walked in carrying a thermos.
Seeing it was him, He Yu turned off the game, casually placed her phone next to her pillow, and smiled, "It's a workday today, aren't you going to work, senior brother?"
"I was too lazy to go to the company team building event today, but my mom made black chicken soup, so I brought it to you."
Han Qi walked to the chair next to the small bed and sat down. He looked carefully at He Yu's calves and knees, which were bandaged. His brows furrowed slightly, and his eyes were serious and gloomy.
"It's nothing serious. I just got grazed by the delivery guy's electric scooter and fell. It's all just superficial injuries."
He Yu smiled casually, picked up the small table standing by the bed, unfolded it, lifted the thermos, and opened it. A rich, sweet fragrance wafted out with the steam, and her eyes immediately lit up.
"It smells so good! Where are the chopsticks and spoon?"
Han Qi handed her the cutlery: "Don't use your phone while walking in the future, it's too dangerous. My parents are very worried after they heard about it."
"I wasn't using my phone..." He Yu glanced at Han Qi's serious expression, took back her explanation, and obediently said, "I know, I won't do it again."
Han Qi nodded, watching her devour the entire bucket of black-boned chicken, meat and broth, leaving nothing behind.
It seems she wasn't affected at all; her appetite is still great.
After tidying up, Han Qi raised his wrist to check the time: "It's getting late. There's a lecture being broadcast live today, so I have to go back first."
He Yu was in a good mood after eating and drinking her fill. Upon hearing this, she waved her hand generously and said, "Go ahead, go ahead. The clinic is very close to my shop. I'll have my staff pick me up in a bit."
Han Qi nodded, but before leaving, he glanced at He Yu with some unease: "Will it work?"
He Yu nodded with absolute certainty: "It can work!"
So Han Qi left.
As He Yu watched the sliding door being closed again, the smile on her face gradually faded.
She picked up her phone from beside her pillow and opened "Jianghu Order".
The game screen still shows a horse-drawn carriage trotting along an official road, but unlike before, the road is now much wider and smoother, indicating that we have arrived at a new place.
He Yu's gaze fell on the carriage, but she was thinking about the scene that morning when she was knocked down by the electric scooter.
A long, straight road with no intersections.
She clearly remembers carefully observing her surroundings before crossing the road. There were only cars parked outside the zebra crossing and a few pedestrians, but no electric bikes at all.
But just as she took a couple of steps, an electric scooter suddenly appeared out of nowhere and whizzed past her from behind, knocking her down instantly without any warning.
He Yu was still in a daze when the rider in the yellow uniform helped her sit up.
She was certain that there were no electric bikes behind her when she was waiting at the red light, and not even a second before she stepped out. How could she not see such a conspicuous delivery bike?
Looking at the realistic and exquisitely detailed game graphics before him, He Yu's long-held, seemingly absurd idea gradually became clearer and more readily apparent—
Some of the actions she takes in this game can have real-world consequences.
