Chapter 28 Mysterious Information

Chuhe drove the carriage without resting, following the official road out of Shuozhou and into the territory of Yizhou.

Although Yizhou is located south of Shuozhou and its climate is not as harsh, it is still a vast and sparsely populated area.

Looking around, the snow has thinned considerably, leaving the earth bare and withered, making it appear even more desolate.

As darkness fell, the surrounding area remained a vast wilderness, devoid of any living creature, with only a rough official road winding its way into the distance.

Chuhe found a low-lying area, parked the carriage there, and called Heshi to gather firewood and start a fire.

In the past, when Chuhe traveled alone, he would not rest unless he was really tired. If he knew the way and the direction, he would even travel overnight.

But now there's another one, He Shi.

Although he had been sitting in the carriage the whole time, sheltered from the wind and without having to exert himself, he was still just a young child. The bumpy ride must have been exhausting, and he needed to rest so that he wouldn't fall ill before even returning to Yunzhou.

The fire was lit quickly.

Chu He took out a few pieces of charcoal and a small iron pot from the luggage bag in the carriage, put the pot on the fire, and stretched out his hand to He Shi without looking up.

He Shi cooperated by taking out a water bottle from his pocket and placing it in the other's hand, watching as the other poured in the water he had filled up when passing a river earlier that day.

He raised his hand and pulled the gray scarf around his neck up to cover his nose and ears, which were red from the cold.

Chuhe watched quietly as the water in the pot slowly boiled, threw in a few pieces of dried meat, and stirred it with a twig.

He was also wearing a scarf, but unlike He Shi, Chu He didn't seem to feel cold. He casually poked the fire with a branch in his hand to make it burn brighter.

"I didn't see you wearing a scarf yesterday, so I thought you didn't have one."

The night was too quiet, and the cold wind howled. Chu He watched as He Shi huddled up, shivering as he warmed himself by the fire, and seemed to be trying to make conversation.

He Shi's gaze sharpened, and he said naturally, "This scarf was wrapped inside the cloak before, so you probably didn't see it. It wasn't too cold yesterday, so I didn't take it out."

Actually, the scarf was given to him by a deity early this morning, but he couldn't tell Chu He that, even though Chu He was also considered half of his benefactor.

He Shi didn't want to wear it at first, but it was too cold at night, and he was afraid that his ears would freeze, so he had no choice but to take it out and wrap it around his ears to keep warm.

Chu He glanced at He Shi, then at the carriage parked upwind to block the wind, inside which was He Shi's old wooden box.

Chu He knew that there were some things inside that were very unusual for a little beggar, and he had asked He Shi about them. The other party's answer was still the same: "I was lucky, I found them."

After asking a few more questions, he noticed that He Shi's gaze had begun to show signs of wariness, so he simply shut up.

So be it, it's all trivial stuff anyway. Can't Junior Brother have some secrets of his own?

If I interfere too much, I'll just seem overly fussy and annoy people unnecessarily.

After dinner, Chuhe told He Shi to go to sleep in the carriage, while he would keep watch.

He Shi refused to rest and insisted on staying with him. Chu He tried to persuade him for a long time before finally agreeing to let He Shi keep watch for the rest of the night. Only then did He Shi get into the carriage, wrap himself in a cloak, and go to sleep.

The wilderness was eerily quiet in the dead of night, with unfathomable darkness all around. Only a fire in front of you emitted a warm glow, giving you the feeling of being on the edge of an abyss, yet still in the human world.

Chuhe was already used to this feeling.

A faint wolf howl echoed in the distance. A cold wind swept by, and the flickering orange-yellow firelight reflected on his expressionless face, casting a huge, writhing black shadow behind him that stretched out and merged with the deeper darkness.

It's quite cold.

Chuhe tightened the blanket draped over himself, added two more pieces of charcoal to the fire, and stretched his hands and feet over to warm them.

Suddenly, as if he had seen something unbelievable, his pupils contracted sharply, and he instantly stood up from the ground, drew his long sword with a clang, and with his back to the fire, quickly and warily looked around.

It was quiet all around, and something seemed to be hiding in the unfathomable darkness in the distance, silently watching.

Chu He didn't notice anything unusual. He maintained his sword-wielding stance, slowly bent down, and his fingertips touched the edge of his boots.

A folded piece of white paper was tucked between the boots and the calves, with about half an inch of the edge showing, standing out conspicuously against the black clothing.

Chu He gently pulled out the paper, opened it with one hand, and began to read it by the firelight.

'Wei Buyu is leading men in pursuit; we must be on guard.'

Those few simple words caused Chu He's pupils to dilate once again.

The contents of the note were surprising, but what Chu He wanted to know most was who would slip a piece of paper into his boot without him noticing.

He remained silent for a while, then picked up the note again and read it once more.

The paper was the kind that was very common on the market. Although the handwriting on it was neat, it was very ordinary, even like the font on the printed books sold in bookstores, without any special features.

Who exactly was secretly reminding me, and using such covert methods at that...?

Chu He was completely baffled. Looking at the three words "Wei Buyu" on the note, a sentence suddenly flashed through his mind.

"Chu He! Let me tell you! There's another master lurking nearby. If we fight to the death tonight, be careful someone else might reap the benefits!"

Was Wei Buyu not bluffing him at the time, or was there really such a master in the vicinity?

If that's the case, why would this expert help me?

Could it be... that he is someone Master knows?

Chu He frowned slightly, gazing at the light, fluttering piece of white paper in his hand, lost in deep thought.

------

Since playing games, He Yu has gradually come to realize a pattern.

Aside from interacting with NPCs when buying things at shops, she has no other way to directly talk to them.

This meant that He Yu couldn't tell Chu He that Wei Buyu was leading people to hunt him down. He couldn't very well "appear" and use supernatural means to convey the information to him, could he?

For example, words suddenly appear out of thin air on an empty ground, or inanimate objects suddenly come to life...

Putting aside whether Chu He would believe the message she conveyed, just the fact that this effect was clearly beyond human capability would surely terrify Chu He to the point of questioning his existence.

What if he suspects He Shi and abandons him?

So we still need to remind him in a slightly more reasonable way.

After the goods in the [General Store] refreshed in the early morning, one of the items in the grid happened to solve He Yu's problem.
