Chapter 10 Wild Dog Guards

Compared to other families in the county, the Li family's gate was quite imposing, not only painted in vermilion but also with two stone lions on either side of the stone steps.

The plaque above the gate reads "Li Mansion". The snow in front of the gate has been swept clean, revealing the bluish-gray stone bricks.

He Yu moved the camera around and looked around, but didn't find anything noteworthy, so he clicked on the plaque of the [Li Mansion].

The scene shifts to a square courtyard with no one in it. On either side are stables and servants' quarters.

He Yu pressed the forward button and moved forward, passing through a door and arriving at another courtyard.

The courtyard is much larger now, and there are some decorations like pavilions and rockeries.

He Yu glanced around and saw a bright red arrow pointing to the house directly north.

We've got a lead.

He Yu's eyes lit up, and he reached out and tapped the arrow. The game interface switched, and he arrived at a well-decorated two-courtyard house.

There was a brazier on the floor of the outer room, and a large desk was placed by the window. A young man dressed in a moon-white long robe sat behind the desk, reading a book.

A servant boy stood bowing and scraping to one side of the desk.

He Yu zoomed in on the image and saw that it was indeed two identical NPC model faces. They seemed to be just passersby and shouldn't be too difficult to deal with.

The two people are talking.

[Servant A: Young Master, I sent someone to check on the little beggar on North Commercial Street this morning. He seems to have caught a cold; he's lying there listlessly.]

[Young Master Li: Oh? Did you ask the people around you?]

[Servant: I asked around, and the vendors all said those two jackets were found where he slept; there's no mistake.]

Young Master Li: Hmm...

[Servant: But...]

[Young Master Li: Hmm?]

[Servant: But none of them saw when the little beggar took the coat back...]

In the scene, Young Master Li sneered and slammed the book on the table, startling the servant who was standing bent over.

[Young Master Li: Of course they dug it up from the mass grave in the middle of the night! Those two good-for-nothings, Ding San and Ding Si, are they sure the body wasn't disturbed?]

[Servant: Young Master, when the two of them went to bury the body later, it was lying exactly as it was on the cart, almost completely buried by the snow...]

[Young Master Li: So what! Even if someone finds out, so what! I am the eldest son of the Li family, my parents will protect me.]

A hint of malice, almost real, appeared on Young Master Li's face, making He Yu shudder and reminding her of the breakfast vendor.

Next, Young Master Li gathered his men to prepare to set off to capture He Shi. He Yu frowned as she watched them gather in the front yard. There were nearly ten people in total, and they marched out the door in a grand procession heading north.

Having recognized the game's perfectly self-consistent algorithmic logic, He Yu has decided not to resort to cheating unless absolutely necessary.

Who knows how a group of intelligent NPCs will react after witnessing supernatural power, and what kind of trouble it will bring to He Shi?

He Shi is currently completely incapable of protecting himself, and she can't always be online. What if something happens to her?

After all, nobody knows if the game's protagonist can be resurrected after death. What if they can't?

He Yu had actually come up with a solution, but he wasn't entirely confident of success. He could only try it out first. If it didn't work, he would just give up, knock these people out one by one with a finger, and then find a way to escape with He Shi.

He Yu exited the [Li Mansion] and changed her perspective to follow those people until they were almost approaching North Commercial Street. At that time, she activated the [Wild Dog Guardian] that had been gathering dust on the shelf.

------

Two stray dogs, one black and one yellow, darted out from the neighboring street, barking wildly as they pounced into the Li family's procession, their target clearly being a servant's sheepskin coat.

The servants immediately panicked, shouting and rushing forward to punch and kick the two wild dogs, tearing at them to make them let go.

But the dog seemed to be possessed, refusing to let go until the servant couldn't take it anymore, took off his sheepskin coat, and ran away.

Seeing that the dog had succeeded, He Yu quickly reached out and controlled the two dogs to run towards North Commercial Street.

The group of men shouted and chased after them.

As soon as they turned into the street, they saw the big black dog throw the sheepskin coat it was carrying in its mouth into the corner of the wall.

This is exactly where He Shi is lying.

Hit by the coat, He Shi vaguely heard a series of noises around him and opened his eyes groggily. His gaze turned and met that of a big black dog.

He Shi: "..."

Before He Shi could even make a move to attack, the big black dog turned and ran away in a flash. Seeing its older brother escape, the yellow dog also quickly spurred its legs and followed.

He Shi felt that his previously muddled mind seemed to have cleared up a bit. He rubbed his forehead and sat up, looking at the coat he had thrown on him, and was momentarily stunned.

Is this another gift from the gods?

It couldn't have been brought by that dog, could it?

Come to think of it, those two dogs that ran away did look somewhat familiar...

Just then, a series of hurried footsteps approached from afar. He Shi looked closely and saw a group of people rushing towards him aggressively.

The man at the front was wearing a dark blue cotton coat. He looked shrewd and was panting heavily as he looked He Shi up and down.

He Shi glanced at the group of people without showing any emotion, and his heart sank when he saw their clothes.

The shrewd man, catching his breath slightly, glared at He Shi: "You filthy beggar, how dare you steal from the Li family? Don't you want to live?!"

He Shi understood perfectly well, but he didn't show it on his face. He just asked in a low voice with doubt, "Master, I didn't steal anything... Are you sure you're not mistaken..."

The shrewd man raised an eyebrow, about to speak, when the burly man beside him, dressed in a thin shirt, shouted first, "Bullshit!"

As he spoke, he strode forward and grabbed He Shi's coat.

He looked at the hole in his coat and the foul-smelling dog saliva, feeling both angry and heartbroken. He was so angry he wanted to bite his teeth. Pointing at He Shi, he roared, "You still say you didn't steal it? What is this?!"

"I didn't steal it," He Shi said timidly, shifting back slightly and lowering his head, his voice still very soft. "I don't know where it came from..."

The burly man glared at the shrewd man, about to ask more questions, but was stopped by the man with a fierce glare.

He was about to try and trick the little beggar when his idiot subordinate interrupted him. Since trying to trick him again wouldn't work, he had to change his approach.

"Kid, let me just tell you straight." The shrewd man's lips curled into a cold smile as he spoke calmly and confidently. "Someone said they saw you carrying two sheepskin coats. These coats are winter clothes that our Li family provides for all the servants. Tell me, where did you steal them from? If you tell the truth, I can let it go. But if you lie to me, you must have heard a lot about the methods our Li family uses in the marketplace..."

He Shi remained curled up, looking pitiful as a small ball. He kept shaking his head slightly, his voice rising a little, tinged with tears: "Master, I really didn't steal it! I'm just a beggar, how could I have the guts to steal from you gentlemen? I, I'm innocent!"

The shrewd man sneered, raised his hand and waved it forward, saying in a cold voice, "Take him back to the manor and let the young master interrogate him himself. I don't believe he won't tell the truth!"

Several burly servants rushed forward and almost instantly broke down He Shi's resistance, tying his hands behind his back.

"go!"

Led by the shrewd man, the group left North Commercial Street in a grand procession, just as they had arrived.

As soon as they left, the street vendors and pedestrians seemed to come alive again, going about their business as if nothing had happened.
