This Life's Song: The Genius Rune Master

Chapter 11 Fighting a Pack of Wolves

It was impossible for the two of them not to be nervous, watching the wolf pack slowly approach them.

"Stand behind me," Lian Xue reminded him, fearing he lacked offensive power.

"No need, let's stand back to back, that way we can prevent the wolves from attacking us," Qi Nianbei said, then came to Lian Xue's side and turned to look around.

"Okay," the two said, falling silent and ready for battle.

One wolf had already approached the two, within about a meter of them, and the surrounding wolves were also eyeing them menacingly, restlessly moving closer to them.

The tension was at its peak when a wolf pounced from the side, its claws just centimeters away from grabbing the two of them. Lian Xue cast a talisman to immobilize the wolf, which paused for a few moments. As Lian Xue cast the talisman, Qi Nianbei simultaneously swung his longsword, and the wolf's head fell to the ground, its blood splattering all over the two of them. Ignoring everything else, they exchanged a glance, both of them showing a hint of admiration in their eyes.

The blood stimulated the wolf pack, and the wolves let out deafening howls. At the same time, four wolves pounced at the same time. Lian Xue made a hand seal, and four talismans flew out. Qi Nianbei also swung his longsword and killed one of them.

After Lian Xue threw out the talisman, she also swung her dagger and injured the wolf's eye. Another wolf was burned by the fire talisman, and the last one engaged in a fierce battle with Qi Nianbei.

Seeing the two wolves heading towards her again, Lianxue concentrated her energy, threw out an ice talisman, froze one of them, and started fighting with the wolf whose eye had been scratched. When the wolf pounced, Lianxue dodged to the right and reacted quickly, slashing the wolf's paw with her sword.

Qi Nianbei was also entangled with the wolf. At this moment, the advantage of using a sword became apparent. It could be used for both offense and defense. While dodging, he swung his sword. The wolf was already intimidated and let out a whimper, hesitating to get close.

The wolf dared not attack, but Qi Nianbei knew there were many more behind her. She couldn't afford to get entangled with this one, or she would run out of energy and be eaten by the wolf.

Lianxue slashed the wolf's leg, threw out another immobilization talisman, and stabbed the wolf's lower abdomen at close range. The dagger left a trail of blood as it passed. Before she could rest, the other wolf recovered and pounced. She retreated and kicked the wolf's head.

The wolf had been tricked many times and was on high alert. When it saw her kick, it quickly stopped, and Lianxue's foot grazed the wolf's nose.

Seeing this, the wolf opened its fangs and bit at her foot. She spun around, raised her other foot, and kicked back, this time hitting the wolf's mouth.

The wolf howled, attracting the other wolves that had been waiting to pounce.

Taking advantage of the wolf's howl, they leaped forward and thrust their daggers straight into the wolf's head. The wolf fell to the ground with a thud, and before they could rest, the two were close together again.

"Damn it, how come there are so many wolves? When did we get surrounded by them?" Qi Nianbei spat out a mouthful of bloody phlegm and complained.

"The sounds we heard earlier were probably from them. Wolves are good at hiding and attacking; they can even lie in wait for days for a single prey. Their patience is exceptional." Lianxue nodded, recalling her master's teachings.

“No wonder, wolves are good at hiding during the day, but their physical strength decreases at night. They are really smart animals.” The two talked, but their actions did not stop. Anyone who tried to get close to them was injured or killed by the two.

The fight lasted for an hour until it was completely dark. The wolf pack's attack became even more ferocious. They had already killed about ten wolves, but there were still many more to come. The blood mixed with the sweat of the two men had a pungent and unpleasant smell.

"We have to find a way to break through, otherwise we'll run out of energy sooner or later if we keep dragging this out," Qi Nianbei said truthfully. At this moment, he had already used up 60% of his energy, and if he continued to drag it out, he would only be waiting to die.

“You’re right. There must be an alpha wolf in the pack. Let’s observe carefully and eliminate the alpha wolf, then the pack will disperse.” Lian Xue frowned slightly as she finished speaking and carefully observed all the wolves.

“Okay, we have to hurry. The fire we lit is almost out, and if it gets completely dark, we won’t be able to find a wolf. Once it’s dark, it will become the wolf’s world, and we’ll only be able to passively take a beating,” Qi Nianbei said, glancing at the fire beside him and nodding in agreement.

The two remained silent, observing their surroundings and maintaining their defenses. (Details omitted.)

Deep in the forest, near the mountain where Lian Xue had seen them, the two were covered in blood and looked utterly wretched. A few meters in front of them stood a man in black, one of his hands severed and covered in knife wounds. "My master will not let you go. Prepare to die," the old man said, his head bowed, and he was already dead.

"Young Master, we finally killed him," Xiaoyue said, panting.

It turned out that after escaping, the two arrived at this place, where Leng Yaoye set up a killing formation. This formation was very time-consuming, taking an hour to set up. Afterwards, the old man arrived, and the two of them, working together with the killing formation, barely managed to kill him, but they also suffered considerable injuries.

"Don't be careless, heal your wounds quickly, we don't know if anyone else will come." Leng Yaoye's eyes were bloodthirsty as he ignored the old man's words and looked into the unknown distance.

"Young Master, we're out of healing pills. I'll go find some herbs." As a guard, Xiaoyue naturally knew about healing herbs. After saying that, he turned around and staggered to the side.

Leng Yaoye sat down and circulated his spiritual energy. Before long, Xiaoyue returned.

"Young Master, I've found it. Let me apply the medicine for you first." He took out a handful of medicinal herbs, crushed them with a stone, and gently applied them to the wounds. Some of the wounds had bone exposed, while others were everted.

Xiaoyue felt a pang of heartache, saying, "When has the young master ever suffered such torment?" Her eyes welled up with tears.

"I'm fine. As long as my parents are not in mortal danger, it's all worth it," Leng Yaoye said with a frown. In fact, he was not sure if they were safe, or if what he did could save them. He couldn't help but feel sad.

"They will, Master and Madam. They will be waiting safely for Young Master to rescue them," Xiaoyue could only say, not knowing how to comfort people. He didn't know the final answer either.

"Alright, young master, you should recover first. I'll go get some food." Xiaoyue finished applying the medicine and turned to leave.

"Stop! Don't you know you're injured?" Leng Yaoye shouted coldly, staring at Xiaoyue.

"My injury is nothing serious, young master, don't worry. I'll get some food first, then I'll apply the medicine." Caught off guard by the young master's sudden rebuke, she initially thought she had done something wrong. Realizing the young master was just concerned, she forced a smile and returned.

"Come here," Leng Yaoye said forcefully.

Helpless, Xiaoyue had no choice but to obediently go over. Leng Yaoye grabbed his hand, pressed him down to the ground, and lifted his clothes from behind, revealing that his back was already a bloody mess.

"Hiss, ugh," he forced out a soft sound.

"This is what you call a minor injury?" Leng Yaoye frowned and said seriously, taking the medicinal herbs Xiaoyue had just gathered, crushing them, applying them to the wound, tearing off a corner of his own underwear to bandage it, and only after applying the herbs to the other wounds did he release Xiaoyue.

"Thank you, young master." Xiaoyue felt both bewildered and gratified, gratified by the young master's approachability and his equal treatment of her.

The two treated their wounds, found some food, and rested.

"Young Master, it's getting dark. Shall we continue?" Xiaoyue asked, glancing at the sky.

“Let’s go. We can’t stay too long. I’ve heard that this mountain is the entrance to the realm of cultivation. If we hurry, we can find a place to stay,” Leng Yaoye replied. He wanted to cultivate to the Martial Emperor realm as soon as possible, so he had to go to the realm of cultivation.

"Young Master, there are many wolves howling over there. It seems someone is in danger." Just then, a pack of wolf howls reached their ears.

"Ignore it," Leng Yaoye said and left first.

He glanced back and realized the wolf howls were quite a distance away. He shook his head, turned around, and followed the young master.
