This Life's Song: The Genius Rune Master
Chapter 10 The wolf is coming
Ye Lan nodded as she looked at the halos around the two of them.
"Well done, young man. It seems you're a promising child," Lu Yaorao said, removing her invisibility talisman and appearing in front of the young man, patting him on the shoulder.
Earlier, he had barely managed to get up, holding onto a small tree for support; he was completely supported by the tree. This time, he almost fell down again, but he couldn't say anything, so he could only nod helplessly in agreement.
"Since I've decided to take you along, let me introduce you. This is my master," Lu Yaorao said, looking at the young man.
"This is my junior sister, and I am her second senior sister," she said, completely ignoring the boy's thoughts and not bothering to ask, continuing on her own.
"I am the young master of the Treasure Pavilion. As I just mentioned, my name is Qi Nianbei," the young man replied with a smile.
"Here I have a healing pill. It's not the best, but it'll be enough to heal your wounds," Lu Yaorao said, handing the young man a pill.
"In that case, I won't stand on ceremony, so as not to hold you back." The young man took the pill without hesitation and swallowed it directly.
"Saving you was just a side thing; we won't go out of our way to get you. Our main focus now is on helping Lianxue improve her strength," Ye Lan said after a moment's thought, observing the boy's simple and honest demeanor, suggesting he didn't seem like a bad person.
"That's right, we won't interfere with Junior Sister's training," Lu Yaorao hurriedly replied.
"We won't specifically protect you either. Similarly, you'll need to train alongside her. We're only responsible for ensuring your safety, understand?" Ye Lan gestured towards Lian Xue. She spoke solemnly.
"We are already grateful that you saved us. There's no need for you to help. We will face this together and never give up," Qi Nianbei said with a serious and determined look in her eyes.
"I know, I'll take good care of myself," Lianxue said hurriedly, afraid they would worry about her.
"Take a rest. You need to heal your wounds and recover your strength," Ye Lan said. After finding a relatively high place, she threw out an isolation talisman, separating the four of them from the forest.
Previously, because she dared not use open flames, she had only eaten fruit. To be honest, Lianxue was already very hungry. Now that her master had isolated the area, she could finally eat something.
"Junior sister, watch your senior sister roast rabbit for you!" she said, producing several prepared rabbits from who-knows-where.
"Senior Sister, when did you catch it?" Lian Xue asked with a look of surprise.
Qi Nianbei glanced at them silently, saying nothing. She sensed a relaxed atmosphere between the master and disciple, and unconsciously felt relaxed herself, her previous anxiety dissipating.
After roasting for about an hour, the rabbit meat emitted a rich aroma. Lu Yaorao picked up a piece of rabbit meat and gave one to each of her master, junior sister, and Qi Nianbei, and then picked up a piece for herself to eat.
After eating and drinking their fill, the two had recovered considerably. "You two go and train. Be sure to take every battle seriously. Of course, you two also need to cooperate with each other," Ye Lan instructed with a slight frown.
"Don't worry, Master. We're still here. Let them go. Young Qi, I believe in you! Keep it up!" Lu Yaoyuan quickly smoothed things over, seeing his master's worry.
"I can't guarantee anything else, but escaping with her is no problem," the boy said, his face slightly flushed as he scratched his head.
“He’s right, running away is fine. If you can’t win, you can run first and then take revenge,” Lian Xue said with a smile.
Having said that, they removed the talisman and vanished in a flash.
"It seems your master and senior sister dote on you," Qi Nianbei said, glancing at Lian Xue.
"Yes, I was raised by my master since I was a child, so naturally my master treats me the best," Lianxue said proudly.
"Let's go, don't delay. If we walk faster, we'll encounter high-level monsters in a few days," Qi Nianbei said to the girl as he walked forward. Since it was a training exercise, he naturally had to fight against powerful monsters to find his own shortcomings.
Lianxue nodded, and the two walked deeper into the area. The closer they went to the center, the fewer monsters they encountered, probably because the higher-level monsters had a stronger sense of territory.
"Um... I don't have anything left to defend myself. My things were all taken by the people chasing me. All I have left is this sword, but don't worry, I definitely won't hold you back," Qi Nianbei said somewhat embarrassedly, pointing to his sword. After being replenished with food and pills, he had recovered about 70-80% of his strength.
Lian Xue glanced at Qi Nianbei with sympathy, nodded, and continued walking without saying anything. What could she say? They had already made their vows, and from this moment on, they would be bound together for life and death.
Qi Nianbei used his sword to clear away excess branches and weeds along the way, starting to clear them a few steps in front of Lian Xue. Soon, the two emerged from the dense forest and could see a mountain rising in the distance. How far away? (If you knew the saying "looking at a mountain makes your horse run itself to death," you'd understand.) It looked close, but...
Just as the two saw the mountains behind them, the trees began to thin out.
Unseen by them, a pair of emerald green eyes silently watched the two of them.
The sounds of birdsong and crickets echoing through the woods can easily lull one into a false sense of security.
"Oh, this is good stuff!" Qi Nianbei said and ran to the right, reaching out to pick a purple grass. At the top of the grass was a small pink flower, only the size of a mung bean, which was hard to spot without close inspection.
"Do you know what this is?" Qi Nianbei ran over to Lian Xue excitedly and asked.
"Could it be some kind of herb? I really don't know," Lianxue guessed helplessly.
"That's right, it is indeed a medicinal herb. This herb is called Purple Leaf, and it can be used to refine the Meridian Renewal Pill. Its value is around a thousand high-grade spirit stones," Qi Nianbei said happily.
"I never expected to find such precious medicinal herbs. It's a pity I don't recognize them," Lian Xue said with regret. She truly knew nothing about medicinal herbs and had never studied them before.
"I'm here for you, so we won't miss out on any good medicinal herbs. And if you remember this, you can recognize them yourself and won't miss them again," Qi Nianbei said confidently with a smile.
As darkness fell, they continued forward, sensing sounds around them. They looked around but found nothing amiss, and continued on.
"I really did hear a sound just now, it's strange," Qi Nianbei muttered to herself, shaking her head.
"Actually, I heard a sound too, it might have been the wind," she said, unsure, that was all she could say.
As the sun completely set, the rustling sounds around us grew louder, and looking back, we saw many green eyes that sent chills down our spines.
"What's going on? What are these?" Lianxue asked nervously.
"I... I think it should be a wolf," Qi Nianbei replied, her words slurred.
Thinking to myself, "There are too many, it's terrifying. I can't show weakness, I'm a man," Mo Mo reminded herself.
"Wolves, what do we do?" Lian Xue asked, drawing her dagger and assuming a defensive stance.
"Um, first, let's light a fire, wolves are afraid of fire," Qi Nianbei said after thinking for a moment.
"Okay, I have a tinderbox here. Then they won't attack?" She took out the tinderbox and added, actually knowing what was going on, but still nervous and wanting to say something.
"Let's leave it like this for now. They won't dare come over. Once they do, we'll kill them." He actually wanted to say that he had no choice, but since he was a man, he had to grit his teeth and bear it.
They picked up some dry twigs and grass nearby and lit them. The fire completely illuminated the darkness, revealing that the two were already surrounded by wolves.
The wolves had been slowly approaching, but upon seeing the firelight, they hesitated. Some circled in place, some howled as if threatening, and some moved forward, seemingly wanting to devour the two tiny humans.
