Rebirth of a Farmer's Dad

Chapter 9 Paying Off Debts and the New House

Since Hu Zi and Dun Zi completed their apprenticeships, Luo Feng has gained another business: catering for weddings and funerals. To this end, Luo Feng even put up a sign next to his stall that reads: "Accepting all kinds of wedding and funeral banquets."

After that, Luo Feng took Dunzi with him and frequently traveled to various wedding and funeral venues. As for the business at the market, Luo Feng handed it all over to Hu Zi.

Their division of labor was as follows: Luo Feng would act as a feng shui master or emcee, and host the event as a guest host. Dunzi, on the other hand, would only cook when needed, or assist Luo Feng.

As for the price, it's 20 per session for hosting alone. If you also need to cook, it's 50 per session, which includes two meals.

Because Luo Feng was shrewd and skilled, and because he had witnessed many wedding planning events in his previous life, he was more popular than ordinary feng shui masters. Gradually, he established himself in the industry.

With the addition of the new business, Luo Feng is able to earn several hundred yuan more each month. Now his monthly income has exceeded 3000 yuan.

Autumn was drawing to a close before they knew it, and three months had passed in the blink of an eye. As agreed, Luo Feng was due to repay the money.

At this point, after deducting the dividends given to Hu Zi, Dun Zi, and Dun Zi's father, Luo Feng still had a full 8000 yuan left.

Without hesitation, he hurried to find the village chief, hoping he could gather everyone together to resolve the matter.

Upon arriving at the village chief's house, he explained his purpose to the chief, who told him to bring the money to the ancestral hall that evening, while he would be responsible for notifying the villagers.

That evening, Luo Feng arrived as promised, bringing the money.

The village chief and villagers were already waiting in the ancestral hall.

Luo Feng then took out a stack of coins neatly tied with thin thread and placed them on the table.

He counted the money; it was exactly 1000, no more, no less.

The village chief then had the accountant bring out the previous ledger. Comparing the amounts, Luo Feng returned the money to each villager one by one. Of course, the villagers also stepped forward to leave their fingerprints, indicating that the debts were settled.

After repaying the debt, the villagers finally smiled. With just over a month until the Lunar New Year, they could finally have a good holiday.

Luo Feng seemed much more relaxed. He snatched his own ledger from the accountant and tore it into pieces on the spot.

With the matter settled, the village finally came alive again. Everyone chatted and laughed as they went home in twos and threes.

Luo Feng also went home. That evening, he cooked a table full of delicious dishes and specially invited Hu Zi and Dun Zi to celebrate.

That night, the three men partied all night long. Even Xiaoxinghua was so happy that she forgot to sleep.

So when they woke up again, they found the sun was already high in the sky. Needless to say, they couldn't do business this morning.

However, they couldn't skip cooking for the steel mill. The three of them hurriedly got up and started cooking.

After that, he rushed to the steel plant to deliver the meal.

Fortunately, although it was a bit late, it was just in time for dinner. Without further ado, the three of them helped Dunzi's father start selling food again.

After working for more than half an hour, everyone finally had a break. Because they hadn't prepared the other materials, they couldn't do business in the afternoon.

Luo Feng simply gave Dunzi and Huzi a half-day off, while he took his tools and went home.

Feeling bored, after making all the preparations for tomorrow, Luo Feng stared blankly at his dilapidated house.

It's time to rebuild the house. Living here is drafty and it'll be freezing in winter. If we start now and work quickly, it should be finished before the new year.

Without further ado, Luo Feng figured he had plenty of money. People in the countryside are frugal when building houses; there are stones everywhere, timber can be cut directly from the mountains, and sand is plentiful in the riverbeds. All things considered, seven or eight thousand yuan would be enough to build a large, tiled house.

Luo Feng remembered that there were a few bricklayers in the village, but no one respected him and no one thought he could build a big brick house.

Luo Feng pleaded and begged, almost wearing his lips out, until a bricklayer in the village reluctantly agreed to his request.

After that, things became simple. In fact, the bricklayers in each village all knew each other, and it was common for them to get together and lend a hand.

And just like that, the village bricklayers made a call and immediately found seven or eight people for Luo Feng.

After agreeing on the start date, to reassure everyone, Luo Feng promised on the spot: "15 for senior workers, 12 for junior workers, and half will be paid upon commencement of work, and the full amount will be paid upon completion." He then settled half of the payment for them on the spot.

The bricklayers were speechless.

Days passed, and Luo Feng continued to go to the market as usual. Soon, the day to start work arrived.

Luo Feng moved his things out early and temporarily put them in Hu Zi's house. He decided to stay at Hu Zi's house with Xinghua for a while.

On the day construction began, all the villagers who had nothing else to do came over. They surrounded Luo Feng's house, which was undergoing major construction, pointing and discussing among themselves.

However, Luo Feng had no time to care what they were saying. He was busy serving tea and cigarettes to the Niwa craftsmen.

From then on, Luo Feng's house changed every day. He continued to go to the market as usual, since he didn't understand the house-building process and simply didn't bother with it. He just cooked different dishes for the cooks every day, and his culinary skills received unanimous praise. Everyone said, "It's a pity he's not a chef."

The new house took more than a month to build and was finally completed before the Lunar New Year.

It consists of a main hall, two side rooms, a storage room, a large hall, a kitchen, and a toilet, along with a large courtyard surrounded by a wall.

It's worth mentioning that in the past month or so, all the Niwa craftsmen have gained weight thanks to Luo Feng's care, jokingly saying, "They definitely won't be able to work anymore."

On the day the new house was completed, Luo Feng hosted a dinner at his home, inviting all the craftsmen to eat and settling all their accounts on the spot.

For a moment, the table was filled with clinking glasses and lively conversation.

The bricklayers didn't leave until the afternoon. Before leaving, they politely helped Luo Feng tidy up the yard.

After seeing off all the masters, Luo Feng began preparing to welcome the villagers.

According to the traditions of the older generation, everyone should come together to warm the house on the first night after it is built.

Evening arrived quickly, and Luo Feng had everything prepared, but no one came to his door.

Left with no other choice, he decided to heat the house himself. As he stepped outside to set off firecrackers, he saw that the yard was surrounded by villagers, each carrying a few simple gifts.

"What are you all doing? Since you're here, why don't you go inside?" Luo Feng asked, puzzled.

"Fengzi, I'm sorry about what happened before. Please don't take it to heart," a villager said to Luo Feng apologetically.

“That’s right, we were wrong before,” said an old man in the village.

Luo Feng smiled and shook his head, saying to everyone, "What's the big deal? I wasn't very good in the past, so it's only natural that you looked down on me. Why would I blame you?"

"Really?" the villagers asked.

"Of course it's true," Luo Feng answered without hesitation.

“Let’s finish this drink and forget about the past,” a villager said to Luo Feng, waving the bottle in his hand.

"Okay," Luo Feng replied readily.

Then, Luo Feng welcomed all the villagers into his home, and they drank, chatted, and ate sunflower seeds together. It was quite a lively scene!

Xinghua is very happy today. Many children came to her house to play. This must be the first time that she has been accepted by children!

It wasn't until late at night that Luo Feng saw off the last villager. He was very happy that night. A new house represented status in the village, and that night, Luo Feng's status truly changed.
