Rebirth of a Farmer's Dad
Chapter 50 Training Begins
Everyone had a good time drinking the night before, but the next day they still had to get back to work. Luo Feng wasn't the kind of person to let personal matters interfere with public duties.
Brothers are brothers, and I'll be understanding when I should, but when I ask you to work, you'd better do it well, or things won't be so easy for me.
Whether following a boss like Luo Feng was a blessing or a curse for Biaozi and his two companions was unknown. In any case, the three of them were dragged out of bed early the next morning and started learning how to cook large pot dishes.
The food in the cafeteria is naturally all cooked in large pots, and this has become an undeniable fact, both now and in the future.
The requirements for cooking large pot dishes are not high; as long as the food is cooked through and edible, that's fine. But Luo Feng's requirements for the three of them were definitely more than that.
Luo Feng knew that anyone could cook such a large batch of food, so he wouldn't have any competitive advantage.
For a chef, nothing wins a customer's heart more than their stomach. All other methods of securing a stable customer base are merely supplementary and lack true effectiveness.
However, Luo Feng also had his own advantages, namely the systematic culinary skills he learned in his later life. In other words, he had more accumulated experience than people today.
Don't underestimate these little bits of experience. Even the most insignificant ones can bring about tiny changes in a dish. However, when all these tiny changes come together, the accumulation of quantity will inevitably lead to a qualitative change.
Ultimately, what emerged from this change was Luo Feng's actual competitive advantage. Aside from this, Luo Feng didn't know what else he could rely on.
Therefore, Luo Feng's requirements for them were mostly about attention to detail: the amount of seasoning, whether the stir-frying was even, the heat, knife skills, and so on.
The dishes cooked in the big pot can't possibly be fancy, so they don't need to master any fancy techniques, but at least the vegetables need to be cut evenly so they can be cooked properly.
In addition, the ingredients used in communal stews are all common, inexpensive items that are easy to find. Potatoes, tomatoes, radishes, cabbage, water spinach, eggplant, and pumpkin are all frequent ingredients in communal stews.
These things are not valuable in themselves, and they are everywhere in the countryside, which gave Biaozi and his two companions enough opportunities to try them out.
Luo Feng naturally wouldn't teach them how to cook right away; instead, he had them practice their knife skills. The speed of cutting wasn't important; the most important thing was to cut the vegetables evenly.
Biaozi and his two companions were usually burly men, and they had never done such delicate work before. They were soon exhausted and crying for their parents.
"My God! Look what you've done! I told you to shred the radish, not cut it into chunks."
"And you, you, can you cut a little lighter? You're practically chopping the cutting board to pieces."
"What are you doing, kid? Are you dawdling? You're so slow, what are you even cutting? By the time you're done, the students will have starved to death."
…………
After a long lecture, Luo Feng's voice was practically hoarse, but after a whole day of practice, the three of them still hadn't made any progress.
Ah Fu's small eyes always seemed half-closed. His chopping speed was barely acceptable, but the fineness of his cuts? It was truly unbearable to watch.
Biaozi, true to his name, was really fierce. He chopped away furiously on the cutting board, almost breaking it to pieces.
Compared to the two of them, Baosheng seemed much more refined. But seeing him slowly and deliberately chopping vegetables, Luo Feng was furious; his efficiency was just too low.
After practicing all day, the three of them still didn't seem to have grasped the key points. Although Luo Feng was very impatient, he also knew that this couldn't be rushed.
"Alright, alright, let's take it slow. We still have two months, no rush." Luo Feng waved his hand at the three of them after saying that.
Upon hearing this, the three felt as if they had been granted a pardon and quickly sat down to rest. It was clear they were exhausted from the day.
Luo Feng was devastated at this moment because he realized he had made a huge mistake.
When my master taught me knife skills, he always used raw dough balls. These can be reused and don't cause much waste.
But for some reason, he let those three greenhorns start chopping vegetables right away. Looking at the huge pile of messy, chopped vegetables in front of him, Luo Feng was speechless. This much food would probably last the family two or three days.
The main problem is that these vegetables are all chopped up haphazardly, making it impossible to cook them evenly. It seems I'm going to suffer for the next couple of days. For a chef, especially a top chef like Luo Feng, making him eat such inedible food is worse than death. It's an absolute insult to a high-level chef's pride; if this were in modern times, he might even take a knife and fight you.
However, Luo Feng didn't have any good ideas. He had only brought it upon himself, so he could only swallow his pride and bear it.
Luo Feng secretly vowed to knead the dough tonight and give each of the three of them a piece of raw dough tomorrow so they could practice their knife skills.
The idea was good, but before Luo Feng could even start kneading the dough, the village chief came to his door.
"Hey, isn't this the village chief? What brings you here in the middle of the night?" Upon seeing the village chief, Luo Feng naturally had to greet him.
"It's nothing, I just came to take a look." The village chief smiled.
Then he looked at Biaozi and the other two who were resting inside the house, and asked Luo Feng hesitantly, "These three young men look unfamiliar. I've never seen them before."
"They are my new recruits. I plan to teach them a few skills at home for a few days." Luo Feng was puzzled as to why the village chief would be interested in the three of them, but he still explained.
"I see. So they're from nearby villages too."
"Village chief, what do you mean? What exactly happened?" Hearing the village chief's words, Yingluofeng could guess that something else must have happened.
"Well, here's the thing," the village chief explained. "A couple of days ago, the village chiefs from several nearby villages got together for a meeting. They said a gang of thieves had appeared in the area recently, and these guys steal things, rob, and do all sorts of bad things."
"You suspect that it was done by my brothers?" Luo Feng's tone immediately became somewhat displeased.
"What are you talking about? Fengzi, I trust your character. I just wanted you to take precautions in advance so you don't fall into their trap," the village chief said, waving his hand as he saw that Luo Feng had misunderstood.
"Oh, is that so? I misunderstood the village chief." Luo Feng scratched his head somewhat embarrassedly, and then quickly apologized to the village chief.
"Alright, there's no need for that. Just know it, I'm going back now." The village chief said, then turned and left.
“Brother Feng, this is really strange. We never heard of anything like this when we were in the village.” Biaozi was a busybody, and as soon as the village chief left, he came over.
"Who knows? Strange things happen every year, but this year there seem to be more than usual. I wonder if we're just having some bad luck with the year's zodiac." Luo Feng muttered to himself.
