Rebirth of a Farmer's Dad
Chapter 329 The Price of Growth
Initially, Biaozi and Afu found Luo Feng's approach somewhat unacceptable. After all, Baosheng was their brother, and they had worked together for so long; neither of them wanted to go against Baosheng's wishes or force him to do anything. However, given Luo Feng's assurance that he would help Huaihua mediate, they ultimately acquiesced. After all, they didn't want to lose the cafeteria's business—it was a matter of their livelihood!
Then the rest was simple. Luo Feng took Huaihua back to the county public security bureau, greeted the county head, and asked Huaihua to talk to Baosheng.
This time, Luo Feng didn't let anyone eavesdrop outside. Whether it succeeded or not, this should be considered his last attempt. He might as well leave everything to fate and resign himself to destiny.
"This girl must be the main character! But I don't understand why you brought her here?" The county magistrate, seemingly just trying to make conversation, asked Luo Feng this question, as if he were trying to find something to say.
"You don't understand, do you? Sometimes women can do things that men can't. In some aspects, we have to admit that women have advantages, and we men have to acknowledge that." Luo Feng lit a cigarette, casually scattered the remaining half of the pack around, and said to the county magistrate while blowing smoke rings.
"I say, you still have time to joke around with me even now? Looks like you've already figured out how to explain this to everyone, haven't you?" The county magistrate felt a headache just thinking about this matter; he was trying to trick Luo Feng into revealing information.
"What good ideas could I possibly have? We'll see when the time comes. We'll just have to adapt and deal with whatever comes our way. That's all we can do." Hearing this, Luo Feng gave a wry smile. Who knows what will happen tomorrow? He doesn't have the ability to predict the future. Even if he found a blind fortune teller to tell his fortune now, he couldn't trust his words.
"When are you guys finally going to finish? I'm so sleepy," Wang Xueying asked softly, yawning. She had been busy all day and was really tired.
"If you feel tired, go back and rest. Also, check if Xinghua is going to bed on time. You can sleep with her tonight. Now that this has happened, I'm afraid I won't be able to go back for a while. I might have to stay here until dawn." Seeing Wang Xueying yawning repeatedly, Luo Feng knew she was probably really tired. After thinking for a moment, he gave the instructions in a low voice.
Wang Xueying didn't say much, just nodded and left.
"You little rascal, you're quite the ladies' man! Tell me, when did you hook up with her?" Watching Wang Xueying's departing figure, the county magistrate suddenly gave Luo Feng a mysterious smile, and then asked a question that every man would understand.
"What are you talking about? There's really nothing between us! Besides, don't you even know what time it is? You're a county magistrate, why aren't you concerned with important matters and instead keep harping on my personal issues?" At a time like this, Luo Feng had no mind to talk about anything else! The food processing plant was already troublesome enough, but then this happened, and now he was completely overwhelmed.
"You're lecturing me now, kid! You've gotten quite the talker in just a few days! Looks like I'll have to find a chance to teach you a lesson." The county magistrate didn't take the disrespect in Luo Feng's words to heart. He was just idling around anyway, so he figured it was better to treat it as a joke between old friends than to do nothing at all.
The waiting process is always long, but fortunately, no wait is endless. Although it's unknown what Baosheng and Huaihua talked about in the detention room, they eventually came out and, led by Officer Liu, went to the county magistrate together.
"You two are done talking? Now you should give me an answer, right?" The county magistrate looked at the two of them and asked with great interest.
"Could you tell me something first? How do you plan to handle this matter?" Bao Sheng seemed much calmer at this point, even having the courage to question the county magistrate.
"What do you mean?" The police chief standing to the side couldn't sit still any longer. This wasn't like buying vegetables at the market; there was absolutely no room for negotiation.
“If anyone’s going to go to jail, I’ll take it. She’s just a young girl; she can’t take that kind of torture,” Baosheng said bluntly, not intending to hide anything.
"What do you take this place for? Do you think you can make decisions like this?" The county magistrate was immediately angry, as this was the first time he had ever seen someone trying to bargain with him in the police station.
“Listen to me, you’re telling me. Whoever did this, did it. Don’t even think about taking the blame for someone else. I’m not going to let this happen under my nose. Stop daydreaming. Let me tell you, this isn’t the old society anymore. This is the new China, a place that upholds the law. You won’t escape the punishment you deserve.” The county magistrate spoke these words righteously, clearly indicating that this matter had crossed his bottom line.
“I’ve looked into the whole story. There’s nothing more for you to do here. You should go back and rest early, it’s getting late.” Ignoring Baosheng, the county magistrate first took a document that looked like an interrogation record from Officer Liu and looked at it before speaking to Baosheng.
“I’m not leaving. I did it. The person you’re arresting is me. It has nothing to do with Huaihua.” At this point, Baosheng’s stubbornness kicked in again. He refused to leave and insisted that he was the murderer. He even threatened that if they didn’t arrest him, he would spread the word after he got out, saying that the county magistrate and the leaders of the H County Public Security Bureau were corrupt, distorted the truth, and wronged innocent people.
Upon hearing this, Luo Feng's face turned pale with fright. Bao Sheng was clearly walking into the line of fire! Offending people so blatantly would do him no good at all. He wondered if Bao Sheng's brain had gone awry, and why he was spouting nonsense.
The county magistrate and several leaders from the H County Public Security Bureau were naturally not in a good mood either. Just as they were about to get angry, Huaihua suddenly slapped Baosheng across the face.
Baosheng never expected to be attacked, and even more unexpectedly, it was Huaihua who struck him. For a moment, Baosheng was stunned, and the others were also shocked by this scene, and no one spoke up.
Taking advantage of this moment, Huaihua, with tears streaming down her face, told Baosheng, "Brother Baosheng, please don't be like this. I made this mistake, so I should bear all the consequences myself. Brother Luofeng is right, you're not helping me, you're hurting me! Sooner or later, I will have to learn to pay the price for my actions, and it's better to do it sooner rather than later. Brother Baosheng, thank you, thank you so much, thank you for everything you've done for me, but I was wrong after all, and I deserve whatever punishment I receive. I hope you can respect my decision. Stop making a scene, let's go back." As she spoke, the tear tracks on Huaihua's face became more and more obvious, and in the end, Huaihua's knees buckled and she knelt down in front of everyone.
"Girl, what are you doing? Didn't I tell you? You're too young to suffer like this. Why are you doing this?" Baosheng couldn't control his emotions and burst into tears. The scene was quite touching.
"Alright, alright, a grown man crying like this, aren't you ashamed? Go home and cry if you want, I don't want to see you again." He thought the county magistrate would reprimand him, but to his surprise, he just waved his hand at Baosheng and told him to get lost.
This situation was an unexpected surprise for Luo Feng. Since the county magistrate hadn't lost his temper, it meant there was still room for maneuver. Without thinking twice, Luo Feng grabbed Bao Sheng and ran back, afraid the county magistrate would change his attitude, which would be a real problem—something that couldn't be salvaged with just an apology.
